Sulfur-deficient plants generate a lower yield and have a reduced nutritional value. The process of sulfur acquisition and assimilation play an integral role in plant metabolism, and response to sulfur deficiency involves a large number of plant constituents. Rice (Oryza sativa) is the second most consumed cereal grain, and the effects of sulfur deprivation in rice were analyzed by measuring changes in photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, and antioxidants. The photosynthetic apparatus was severely affected under sulfur deficiency. The Chl content was reduced by 49% because of a general reduction of PSII and PSI and the associated light-harvesting antenna. The PSII efficiency was 31% lower at growth light, and the ability of PSI to photoreduce NADP+ was decreased by 61%. The Rubisco content was also significantly reduced in the sulfur-deprived plants. The imbalances between PSII and PSI, and between photosynthesis and carbon fixation led to a general over-reduction of the photosynthetic electron carriers (higher 1-q(P)). Chromatographic analysis showed that the level of monosaccharides was lower and starch content higher in the sulfur-deprived plants. In contrast, no changes in metabolite levels were found in the tricarboxylic acid or Calvin cycle. The level of the thiol-containing antioxidant, GSH, was 70% lower and the redox state was significantly more oxidized. These changes in GSH status led to an upregulation of the cytosolic isoforms of GSH reductase and monodehydroascorbate reductase. In addition, alternative antioxidants like flavonoids and anthocyanins were increased in the sulfur-deprived plants.  相似文献

To determine gross photosynthesis in benthic microalgal communities, oxygen microelectrodes were used to measure the rate of decrease within the first 4 s after extinction of light. Photosynthetic rates calculated from third-order polynomial fits to the curve of decreasing O2 concentration were compared to the rates obtained by the traditional method, where rates were estimated from linear regression. When photosynthesis was calculated for the fitted initial rates of O2 decrease, maximum rates in microbial mats were up to 32% higher, and the depth-integrated gross photosynthesis was 5%–10% higher than the rates determined by the traditional method. The determinations from fitted initial rates also resulted in a more detailed profile of photosynthetic rate than that normally obtained. Computer simulation based on diffusion models, where the estimated initial rates of O2 decrease were assumed to represent actual photosynthesis rates, verified the validity of the curve-fitting procedure for obtaining high-resolution photosynthesis profiles.  相似文献

Cerebral blood flow was studied by the arteriovenous oxygen difference method in patients with severe hypertension and in normotensive controls. The blood pressure was lowered to study the lower limit of autoregulation (the pressure below which cerebral blood flow decreases) and the pressure limit of brain hypoxia. Both limits were shifted upwards in the hypertensive patients, probably as a consequence of hypertrophy of the arteriolar walls. These findings have practical implications for antihypertensive therapy.When the blood pressure was raised some patients showed an upper limit of autoregulation beyond which an increase of cerebral blood flow above the resting value was seen without clinical symptoms. No evidence of vasospasm was found in any patient at high blood pressure. These observations may be of importance for the understanding of the pathogenesis of hypertensive encephalopathy.  相似文献

During recent years, Yersinia enterocolitica has been isolated from humans and various animal species in connection with intestinal disorders, such as acute ileitis and appendicitis. Cases of septicaemia, polyarthritis and erythema nodosum have also been described (Mollaret & Destombes 1964, Nilehn 1969, Winblad 1969, Lassen 1972, Langford 1972). Y. enterocolitica has been isolated most frequently from chinchillas and hares, but sporadic isolations from deer, cow, horse, rabbit, goat and dog have been reported (Langford, Krogstad et al. 1972). In Norway, an outbreak of the disease in a goat herd is the only described case of yersiniosis among animal species (Krogstad et al.). In a stochastic simulation study the effect of simultaneously changing the model for prediction of breeding values and changing the breeding goal was studied. A population of 100 000 cows with registrations on seven traits was simulated in two steps. In the first step of 15 years the population was selected for production and mastitis occurrence using a univariate model for prediction of breeding values for production and a trivariate model using information on mastitis treatments, udder depth and somatic cell score for prediction of breeding values for mastitis occurrence. In the second step six different scenarios were set up and simulated for 15 years combining two different breeding goals and three different models for prediction of breeding values in 20 replicates. Breeding goal 1 had relative economic value per genetic standard deviation on production (19.4) and mastitis occurrence ( − 50) whereas breeding goal 2 had a economic value on production (19.4), udder depth (4.2), mastitis occurrence ( − 50), non return rate (13.0) and days open ( − 16.75). Model 1 was a model similar to the one used in the first 15 years. Model 2 was an approximate multitrait model where solutions for fixed effects from a model corresponding to model 1 were subtracted from the phenotypes and a multitrait model with an overall mean, a year effect, an additive genetic and a residual effect were applied. Model 3 was a full multitrait model. Average genetic trends for total merit and each individual trait over 20 replicates were compared for each scenario. With the number of replicates the genetic responses using model 2 and 3 were not significant different. With a broad breeding goal using, model 2 or model 3 gave a significantly higher response in total merit than using model 1. Using a narrow breeding goal there was no significant difference between models used for prediction of breeding values. Results showed that with a breeding goal with a lot of emphasis on low heritable traits with a high economic value using a multitrait methodology for prediction of breeding values will redistribute the genetic progress in the total merit index. More gain will come from the low heritable traits in the breeding goal and less from traits with higher heritability. With a broad breeding goal and exploiting the available information in the data the inbreeding coefficient increased though not significantly.  相似文献
