The effect of mixing on anaerobic digestion of manure was evaluated in lab-scale and pilot-scale experiments at 55 degrees C. The effect of continuous (control), minimal (mixing for 10 min prior to extraction/feeding) and intermittent mixing (withholding mixing for 2h prior to extraction/feeding) on methane production was investigated in three lab-scale continuously stirred tank reactors. On comparison to continuous mixing, intermittent and minimal mixing strategies improved methane productions by 1.3% and 12.5%, respectively. Pilot-scale studies also supported the lab-scale results with an average 7% increase in biogas yields during intermittent mixing compared to continuous mixing. The effect of mixing intensities (minimal, gentle or vigorous) in batch assays at 55 degrees C showed that when the process was overloaded by high substrate to inoculum ratio (40/60), gentle (35 times per minute) or minimal mixing (10 min mixing before feeding) was advantageous compared to vigorous mixing (110 times per minute). On the other hand, under low substrate to inoculum ratio (10/90), gentle mixing was the best. The study thus indicated that mixing schemes and intensities have some effect on anaerobic digestion of manures.  相似文献

Given the importance of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) for the structure and function of lake ecosystems, a method that could estimate the amount of CDOM in lake waters over large geographic areas would be highly desirable. Satellite remote sensing has the potential to resolve this problem. We carried out model simulations to evaluate the suitability of different satellite sensors (Landsat, IKONOS, and the Advanced land Imager [ALI]) to map the amount of CDOM in concentration ranges that occur in boreal lakes of the Nordic countries. The results showed that the 8-bit radiometric resolution of Landsat 7 is not adequate when absorption by CDOM at 420 nm is higher than 3 m−1. On the other hand, the 16-bit radiometric resolution of ALI, a prototype of the next generation of Landsat, is suitable for mapping CDOM in a wider range of concentrations. An ALI image of southern Finland was acquired on 14, July 2002 and in situ measurements were carried out in 15 lakes (18 stations). The results showed that there is a high correlation (R2 = 0.84) between the 565 nm/660 nm ALI band ratio and the CDOM absorption coefficient in lakes. Analysis of 245 lakes in the acquired satellite image showed a normal distribution of CDOM concentration among the lakes. However, the size distribution of lakes was highly skewed toward small lakes, resulting in the CDOM concentration per unit lake area being skewed toward high values. We showed that remote sensing enables synoptic monitoring of the CDOM concentration in a large number of lakes and thus enables scaling up to the level of large ecosystems and biomes.  相似文献

Objective To establish whether reinstitutionalisation is occurring in mental health care and, if so, with what variations between western European countries.Design Comparison of data on changes in service provision.Setting Six European countries with different traditions of mental health care that have all experienced deinstitutionalisation since the 1970s—England, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden.Outcome measures Changes in the number of forensic hospital beds, involuntary hospital admissions, places in supported housing, general psychiatric hospital beds, and general prison population between 1990-1 and 2002-3.Results Forensic beds and places in supported housing have increased in all countries, whereas changes in involuntary hospital admissions have been inconsistent. The number of psychiatric hospital beds has been reduced in five countries, but only in two countries does this reduction outweigh the number of additional places in forensic institutions and supported housing. The general prison population has substantially increased in all countries.Conclusions Reinstitutionalisation is taking place in European countries with different traditions of health care, although with significant variation between the six countries studied. The precise reasons for the phenomenon remain unclear. General attitudes to risk containment in a society, as indicated by the size of the prison population, may be more important than changing morbidity and new methods of mental healthcare delivery.  相似文献

Remediation of contaminated sites requires information on upper concentration limits of chemicals in environmental media that are protective of ecological receptors. These upper concentration limits can be considered ecological preliminary remediation goals (EcoPRGs). The motivation for developing EcoPRGs was to provide risk managers with a simple tool for evaluating remedial actions that would be protective of the environment. Hazard quotient calculations used to support ecological screening assessments were modified to derive soil EcoPRGs for terrestrial wildlife populations. The primary modification is a population area use factor that is the fraction of a terrestrial animal population potentially affected by the contaminated site. Wildlife assessment population boundaries are based on a receptor's dispersal distance; for mammals dispersal distance is strongly related to the linear dimension (square root) of home range. Assuming that wildlife are unlikely to disperse beyond some distance from their birth or natal site, dispersal distance can be thought of as the radius of the assessment population's boundaries. This general relationship is useful as a simple way to estimate assessment population areas for terrestrial animals and helps fill data gaps for wildlife without direct measurements of dispersal.  相似文献

The aim with this study was to, under controlled conditions, determine the food preference of mountain haresLepus timidus Linnaeus, 1758 and bank volesClethrionomys glareolus (Schreber, 1780) for a substantial part of the woody plants potentially available for these herbivores during winter. In addition, we compared hare and vole preference patterns. Thirteen woody plant species were simultaneously presented to 9 captive voles and 9 captive hares in preference tests during winter. Consumption by hares from 50 g bundles (one per species) was measured after 3 h, whereas shoot consumption by voles was measured after 12 h. Both hares and voles preferred deciduous species to conifers,Populus tremula, andVaccinium myrtillus being the most preferred species. However, there was considerable variation in palatability among deciduous plant species and only a marginally significant correlation was found between hare and vole preference. One striking differences between hares and voles was that Sorbusaucuparia was the most utilised by voles but the least preferred by hares. In conclusion, deciduous plant species were generally considerably more palatable to hares and voles than conifers, which is consistent with current theories. Nevertheless, the high variation in palatability among deciduous trees and the difference in preference between hares and voles indicate more complex and species-specific patterns with regard to plant— animal interactions. The latter also suggests that hares and voles differ in their dietary adaptations and have different dietary constrains.  相似文献

Structural best management practices (BMPs) are now commonplace for stormwater management in new suburban developments; however, their installation in older central areas is limited. Here, the effect of disconnecting impervious areas from a combined sewer in favour of a new open stormwater system is investigated. The site, an inner city suburb of Malmö, Sweden, consists of council offices and apartment blocks separated by courtyards, roads and parking places. The BMPs range from green-roofs and open channels to detention ponds and their choice, size and location was dictated by cost, available land, safety and public expectations. The system was assessed by comparing synthetic hydrographs for the 1/2, 2, 5 and 10-year design-storms assuming wet and dry initial conditions. Direct runoff was simulated using the time–area method; and routing through the BMPs using PondPack. As the BMPs are in series, the outflow of one BMP became part of the inflow to the next in the system. Additionally, the water balance for the year 2001–2002 was investigated. It was found that the green-roofs are effective at lowering the total runoff from Augustenborg and that the ponds should successfully attenuate storm peak flows for even the 10-year rainfall.  相似文献

Competing hypotheses that rely either on a stepping-stone dispersal via the North Atlantic or the Bering land bridges, or more recent transoceanic dispersal, have been proposed to explain the disjunct distribution of Mediterranean flora in southern Europe and western North America. These hypotheses were tested with molecular dating using a phylogeny of the moss genus Homalothecium based on ITS, atpB-rbcL, and rpl16 sequence data. The monophyly of two main lineages in Western Palearctic (Europe, central Asia and north Africa) and North America is consistent with the ancient vicariance hypothesis. The monophyly of Madeiran H. sericeum accessions supports the recognition of the Macaronesian endemic H. mandonii. A range of absolute rates of molecular evolution documented in land plants was used as probabilistic calibration prior by a Bayesian inference implementing a relaxed-clock model to derive ages for the nodes of interest. Our age estimates for the divergence of the American and Western Palearctic Homalothecium clade (5.7 Ma, IC 3.52-8.26) and the origin of H. mandonii (2.52 Myr IC 0.86-8.25) are not compatible with the ancient vicariance hypothesis. Age estimates suggests that species distributions result from rare instances of dispersal and subsequent sympatric diversification. The calibrated phylogeny indicates that Homalothecium has undergone a fast radiation during the last 4 Myr, which is consistent with the low levels of morphological divergence among sibling species.  相似文献

Leaf litter can be of great importance for the productivity of small oligotrophic lakes surrounded by deciduous forests. Feeding invertebrate shredders produce particulate organic leftovers, but their feeding also enhances the release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). We tested whether invertebrate-mediated DOC release affects the production of heterotrophic water-column bacteria. Submersed leaves were incubated in microcosms with and without shredders; and DOC, absorbance, bacterial abundance and bacterial production in the water column were monitored. We also measured dry weight of the organic particles (FPOC, fine particulate organic carbon, leaf residues and shredders). Total leaf-litter carbon decreased by nearly 80% in the presence of shredders, and on average 56% of the initial leaf carbon ended up as FPOC after 126 days of incubation. Without shredders FPOC production was almost zero, and 72% of the added leaf carbon could be retrieved as leaves when the experiment ended. Both these figures include the rapid release of DOC during the first week of leaf incubation in the lake water (equivalent to 16–19% of total added leaf carbon). Although bacterial production in the water was several times higher in treatments with shredders, bacterial consumption of leaf-derived DOC from shredding was obviously of minor importance in the total carbon budget. This result suggests, although shredders have a strong impact on transformation of leaves to FPOC, they do not greatly enhance the initial rate of mineralization of the leaf-derived detritus.  相似文献

We cloned the precursor of a novel peptide from a cDNA library prepared from pharyngeal tissues of the tunicate, Styela clava. Its sequence predicted a histidine-rich, amidated 23-residue peptide (FLRF(IG)SVIHGIGHLVHHIGVAL-NH2) that we named clavaspirin. A synthetic clavaspirin was prepared and it was found that it killed Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, permeabilized the outer and inner membranes of Escherichia coli, lysed phosphatidylglycerol (POPG) liposomes, and was potently haemolytic towards human and bovine erythrocytes. Each of these activities was performed more effectively at an acidic pH. Circular dichroism measurements of synthetic clavaspirin revealed a largely alpha-helical structure and polarized and residue-specific FTIR spectrometry showed that its association with phospholipid membranes was influenced by pH. Peptides such as clavaspirin may equip tunicate haemocytes to mediate cytotoxicity and participate in antimicrobial defence.  相似文献
