Effect of Myxovirus Infection on Synthesis of Cellular Ribonucleic Acid

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis of chick embryo fibroblasts was inhibited by two members of the myxovirus group, Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and fowl plague virus. It was also found that cellular deoxyribonucleic acid-dependent RNA polymerase was inhibited by a cytoplasmic factor induced by NDV infection.     

Aerobic scaling and resting metabolism in oviferous and post-spawning Barents Sea capelin Mallotus villosus villosus (Müller, 1776)

As part of the quantitative investigations into the bioenergetic relationships of the Barents Sea capelin, Mallotus villosus villosus (Müller, 1776), resting metabolic rates were examined in the oviferous and post-spawning fish in order to provide insights to aerobic scaling and the basal energetic costs associated with reproduction. Aerobic scaling of the different categories of sexually mature fish (body weight, W=13-54 g) could be expressed as: Q_O2=0.106W^1.049 (oviferous fish; N=11), Q_O2=0.411W^0.430 (post-spawning females; N=9), and Q_O2=0.075W^1.012 (post-spawning males; N=14), where Q_O2 is the oxygen consumption (ml O₂ h⁻¹) per fish. The weight specific oxygen consumption of oviferous capelin was about 30% higher (∼125 ml O₂ kg⁻¹ h⁻¹) compared to those of the post-spawning fish (79-87 ml O₂ kg⁻¹ h⁻¹). The results are discussed in context with other empirical studies on the aerobic scaling and metabolic costs involved with the build-up of roe in the fish.     

Effect of danazol on the function of the estrogen and progesterone receptor systems of the human endometrium

Quantity of estrogen- and progesterone-specific binding sites was measured in endometrial tissues of 10 females treated with danazol during 3 month in a dose of 400 mg per day after surgical treatment for endometriosis. It was demonstrated that the amount of estrogen receptors in endometrium of the patients was the same as in endometrial tissue of healthy females but the quantity of nuclear progesterone receptors was markedly increased.     

Feasibility test of a sapphire cryoprobe with optical monitoring of tissue freezing

This article describes a sapphire cryoprobe as a promising solution to the significant problem of modern cryosurgery that is the monitoring of tissue freezing. This probe consists of a sapphire rod manufactured by the edge-defined film-fed growth technique from Al₂O₃ melt and optical fibers accommodated inside the rod and connected to the source and the detector. The probe's design enables detection of spatially resolved diffuse reflected intensities of tissue optical response, which are used for the estimation of tissue freezing depth. The current type of the 12.5-mm diameter sapphire probe cooled down by the liquid nitrogen assumes a superficial cryoablation. The experimental test made by using a gelatin-intralipid tissue phantom shows the feasibility of such concept, revealing the capabilities of monitoring the freezing depth up to 10 mm by the particular instrumentation realization of the probe. This justifies a potential of sapphire-based instruments aided by optical diagnosis in modern cryosurgery.
