Salvia is the most species-rich genus in Lamiaceae, encompassing approximately 1000 species distributed all over the world. We sought a new evolutionary perspective for Salvia by employing macroevolutionary analyses to address the tempo and mode of diversification. To study the association of floral traits with speciation and extinction, we modelled and explored the evolution of corolla length and the lever-mechanism pollination system across our Salvia phylogeny. We reconstructed a multigene phylogeny for 366 species of Salvia in the broad sense including all major recognized lineages and 50 species from Iran, a region previously overlooked in studies of the genus. Our comprehensive sampling of Iranian species of Salvia provides higher phylogenetic resolution for southwestern Asian species than obtained in previous studies. Our phylogenetic data in combination with divergence time estimates were used to examine the evolution of corolla length, woody versus herbaceous habit, and presence versus absence of a lever mechanism. We investigated the timing and dependence of Salvia diversification related to corolla length evolution through a disparity test and BAMM analysis. A HiSSE model was used to evaluate the dependency of diversification on the lever-mechanism pollination system in Salvia. A medium corolla length (15–18 mm) was reconstructed as the ancestral state for Salvia with multiple shifts to shorter and longer corollas. Macroevolutionary model analyses indicate that corolla length disparity is high throughout Salvia evolution, significantly different from expectations under a Brownian motion model during the last 28 million years of evolution. Our analyses show evidence of a higher diversification rate of corolla length for some Andean species of Salvia compared to other members of the genus. Based on our tests of diversification models, we reject the hypothesis of a direct effect of the lever mechanism on Salvia diversification. Therefore, we suggest caution in considering the lever-mechanism pollination system as one of the main drivers of speciation in Salvia.  相似文献

The neuroendocrine and behavioral effects of gradual dietary tryptophan (TRP) depletion, utilizing two magnitudes of a 10-day TRP-restriction diet (700 mg/day and 200 mg/day), were studied in 22 healthy subjects. The prolactin response to a 7 gm L-TRP infusion was measured prior to and on day 10 of the diet. Both diets significantly reduced fasting total plasma TRP by 15 to 20%, but only the 200 mg/day TRP diet led to an enhancement of the prolactin response to intravenous L-TRP. Female subjects demonstrated a more robust increase in plasma prolactin following L-TRP infusion pre-diet and exhibited a larger decrease in plasma TRP following dietary TRP restriction compared to males. There were no significant behavioral effects of either diet. Gradual dietary TRP depletion leads to an enhancement of the prolactin response to L-TRP infusion, suggestive of postsynaptic serotonin receptor supersensitivity.  相似文献

It has been 10 years since the publication of the relative risk model (RRM) for regional scale ecological risk assessment. The approach has since been used successfully for a variety of freshwater, marine, and terrestrial environments in North America, South America, and Australia. During this period the types of stressors have been expanded to include more than contaminants. Invasive species, habitat loss, stream alteration and blockage, temperature, change in land use, and climate have been incorporated into the assessments. Major developments in the RRM have included the extensive use of geographical information systems, uncertainty analysis using Monte Carlo techniques, and its application to retrospective assessments to determine causation. The future uses of the RRM include assessments for forestry and conservation management, an increasing use in invasive species evaluation, and in sustainability. Developments in risk communication, the use of Bayesian approaches, and in uncertainty analyses are on the horizon.  相似文献

Several studies have shown positive responses of parasitism to either host density or landscape complexity. However, no experiments have manipulated host density in landscapes of differing complexity. Here we report the results of a field experiment conducted to determine how host density and agricultural landscape structure jointly affect parasitism and parasitoid diversity of Pseudaletia unipuncta (Haworth) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Parasitism was assessed by experimentally adding P. unipuncta sentinel larvae at low (1 larvae/plant) and high (3 larvae/plant) densities to detect parasitism in commercial cornfields located in a complex and a simple agricultural landscape. The braconid wasps Glyptapanteles militaris (Walsh) and Meteorus spp. accounted for 98.4% of the observed parasitism. Landscape structure did not influence parasitism (80.2% on average) and contrary to expectations, showed a trend towards increased parasitoid richness and diversity in the simple landscape. Increasing host density revealed a trend of increasing parasitoid richness and diversity, and differentially affected parasitism at the parasitoid specific level. G. militaris parasitized a significantly greater proportion of hosts at low host density, while the opposite occurred for Meteorus spp. (primarily M. communis). These offsetting responses of parasitoids resulted in the lack of an overall host density effect on parasitism. The differential response of these parasitoids to host density is discussed in relation to differences in morphological and life history characteristics. Our results suggest that the specific composition of parasitoid assemblages could significantly alter parasitism at different host densities independently of landscape structural complexity.

Zusammenfassung

Verschiedene Untersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass Parasitismus entweder auf die Wirtsdichte oder die Landschaftskomplexität positiv reagiert. Dennoch haben keine Experimente die Wirtsdichte in Landschaften unterschiedlicher Komplexität manipuliert. Hier berichten wir von den Ergebnissen eines Freilandexperiments, das unternommen wurde, um zu bestimmen, wie die Wirtsdichte und die Struktur der Agrarlandschaft gemeinschaftlich die Parasitierung und die Parasitoidendiversität bei Pseudaletia unipuncta (Haworth) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) beeinflussen. Die Parasitierung wurde gemessen indem experimentell P. unipuncta Larven in geringen (1 Larve/Pflanze) und hohen (3 Larven/Pflanze) Dichten hinzugefügt wurden, um die Parasitierung in kommerziellen Kornfeldern zu erfassen, die in komplexen und einfachen Agrarlandschaften lagen. 98.4% der Parasitierung entfiel auf die braconiden Wespen Glyptapanteles militaris (Walsh) und Meteorus spp. Die Struktur der Landschaft beeinflusste die Parasitierung nicht (durchschnittlich 80.2%) und zeigte entgegen den Erwartungen einen Trend zu einer erhöhter Parasitoidenartenzahl und -diversität in der einfachen Landschaft. Eine zunehmende Wirtsdichte ließ einen Trend zu einer erhöhten Parasitoidenartenzahl und -diversität erkennen, und sie beeinflusste die Parasitierung auf dem Artenlevel der Parasitoide unterschiedlich. G. militaris parasitierte einen signifikant höheren Anteil der Wirte bei geringen Wirtsdichten, während für Meteorus spp. (vor allem M. communis) das Gegenteil zutraf. Diese sich ausgleichenden Reaktionen der Parasitoide führten zum Fehlen eines Gesamteffekts der Wirtsdichte auf die Parasitierung. Die unterschiedlichen Reaktionen dieser Parasitoide auf die Wirtsdichte werden in Zusammenhang mit Unterschieden in der Morphologie und Lebensweise diskutiert. Unsere Ergebnisse weisen darauf hin, dass die spezifische Zusammensetzung von Ansammlungen von Parasitoiden die Parasitierung bei unterschiedlichen Wirtsdichten unabhängig von der Komplexität der Landschaftsstruktur signifikant verändern könnte.  相似文献

Background

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends nontargeted opt-out HIV screening in healthcare settings. Cost effectiveness is critical when considering potential screening methods. Our goal was to compare programmatic costs of nontargeted opt-out rapid HIV screening with physician-directed diagnostic rapid HIV testing in an urban emergency department (ED) as part of the Denver ED HIV Opt-Out Trial.

Methods

This was a prospective cohort study nested in a larger quasi-experiment. Over 16 months, nontargeted rapid HIV screening (intervention) and diagnostic rapid HIV testing (control) were alternated in 4-month time blocks. During the intervention phase, patients were offered HIV testing using an opt-out approach during registration; during the control phase, physicians used a diagnostic approach to offer HIV testing to patients. Each method was fully integrated into ED operations. Direct program costs were determined using the perspective of the ED. Time-motion methodology was used to estimate personnel activity costs. Costs per patient newly-diagnosed with HIV infection by intervention phase, and incremental cost effectiveness ratios were calculated.

Results

During the intervention phase, 28,043 eligible patients were included, 6,933 (25%) completed testing, and 15 (0.2%, 95% CI: 0.1%–0.4%) were newly-diagnosed with HIV infection. During the control phase, 29,925 eligible patients were included, 243 (0.8%) completed testing, and 4 (1.7%, 95% CI: 0.4%–4.2%) were newly-diagnosed with HIV infection. Total annualized costs for nontargeted screening were $148,997, whereas total annualized costs for diagnostic HIV testing were $31,355. The average costs per HIV diagnosis were $9,932 and $7,839, respectively. Nontargeted HIV screening identified 11 more HIV infections at an incremental cost of $10,693 per additional infection.

Conclusions

Compared to diagnostic testing, nontargeted HIV screening was more costly but identified more HIV infections. More effective and less costly testing strategies may be required to improve the identification of patients with undiagnosed HIV infection in the ED.  相似文献

Observations on the bioecology and damage of Teratopactus nodicollis Boheman on Phaseolus vulgaris were carried out on field samples by assessing the number of larvae and root damage in 40?ha of a dry bean field from the Federal District, Brazil (16°4??28.41???W; 47°30??21.13???S). Larvae caused the greatest damage at the stage of germination, emergence, and primary leaves, producing 50?% stand reduction. Most larvae pupated in August and September, and adult emergence occurred in middle October. Some larvae were infected with the fungus Metarhizium spp., a biological agent that would be naturally controlling this insect.  相似文献

The extensive published discussion of potential ecological impacts of introduced genetic sequences and genetically engineered organisms has lacked a quantified delineation of the critical questions for the estimation of risk. Ultimately, the ecological risk assessment of introduced gene sequences is the application of evolution, population genetics, and ecology to risk estimation and decision making. This paper provides a framework for the estimation of risk due to introduced sequences in bacteria, and the principles should also hold for many diploid species. Horizontal genetic exchange poses new challenges for ecological risk assessment. Plasmid transfer can occur without any impacts, although the sequence can become ubiquitous in the population. Conversely, the introduction of a plasmid can change the dynamics of the host population, potentially altering the population minimum and maximum characteristics of its dynamics. Because of genetic exchange, new genetic information is unlikely to be constrained among one type of prokaryote. An example of the use of the model is given using genetic exchange data from a series of published soil microcosm experiments. The model demonstrates the increase in plasmid frequency when using experimentally derived conjugation frequencies. Application of these results to ongoing discussion of the risks of genetically engineered organisms is presented. Particular attention is paid to the transfer of genetic material and the resultant changes in host population dynamics.  相似文献

Ixodes ricinus is the main vector for important infectious diseases in both humans and in animals. Microsatellite loci were isolated from a dinucleotide‐enriched library made from I. ricinus sampled in Norway. Seventeen polymorphic microsatellites were further characterized among 24 individuals sampled from an island in the Oslofjord region. The number of observed alleles ranged from two to 17 and the observed heterozygosities between 0.10 and 0.83. Analysis of family materials gives evidence of non‐Mendelian inheritance of several of the characterized loci, among which most could be explained by presence of null alleles.  相似文献

Determining the relative contributions of genetic and environmental factors to phenotypic variation is critical for understanding the evolutionary ecology of plant species, but few studies have examined the sources of phenotypic differentiation between nearby populations of woody plants. We conducted reciprocal transplant experiments to examine sources of variation in growth rate, form, survival, and maturation in a globally rare dwarf population of pitch pine (Pinus rigida) and in surrounding populations of normal-stature pitch pines on Long Island, New York. Transplants were monitored over a 6-yr period. The influence of seedling origin on height, growth rate, survival, and form (single-stemmed vs. multi-stemmed growth habit) was much smaller than the effect of transplanting location. Both planting site and seed origin were important factors in determining time to reproduction; seedlings originating from dwarf populations and seedlings planted at the normal-stature site reproduced earliest. These results suggest that many of the differences between dwarf and normal-stature pitch pines may be due more to plastic responses to environmental factors than to genetic differentiation among populations. Therefore, preservation of the dwarf pine habitat is essential for preserving dwarf pine communities; the dwarf pines cannot be preserved ex situ.  相似文献
