Video displays for behavioral research lend themselves particularly well to studies with chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), as their vision is comparable to humans', yet there has been no formal test of the efficacy of video displays as a form of social information for chimpanzees. To address this, we compared the learning success of chimpanzees shown video footage of a conspecific compared to chimpanzees shown a live conspecific performing the same novel task. Footage of an unfamiliar chimpanzee operating a bidirectional apparatus was presented to 24 chimpanzees (12 males, 12 females), and their responses were compared to those of a further 12 chimpanzees given the same task but with no form of information. Secondly, we also compared the responses of the chimpanzees in the video display condition to responses of eight chimpanzees from a previously published study of ours, in which chimpanzees observed live models. Chimpanzees shown a video display were more successful than those in the control condition and showed comparable success to those that saw a live model. Regarding fine-grained copying (i.e. the direction that the door was pushed), only chimpanzees that observed a live model showed significant matching to the model's methods with their first response. Yet, when all the responses made by the chimpanzees were considered, comparable levels of matching were shown by chimpanzees in both the live and video conditions.  相似文献

Background  

The reactive oxygen-generating N ADPH ox idases (Noxes) function in a variety of biological roles, and can be broadly classified into those that are regulated by subunit interactions and those that are regulated by calcium. The prototypical subunit-regulated Nox, Nox2, is the membrane-associated catalytic subunit of the phagocyte NADPH-oxidase. Nox2 forms a heterodimer with the integral membrane protein, p22 phox, and this heterodimer binds to the regulatory subunits p47 phox, p67 phox, p40 phox and the small GTPase Rac, triggering superoxide generation. Nox-organizer protein 1 (NOXO1) and Nox-activator 1 (NOXA1), respective homologs of p47 phox and p67 phox, together with p22 phox and Rac, activate Nox1, a non-phagocytic homolog of Nox2. NOXO1 and p22 phox also regulate Nox3, whereas Nox4 requires only p22 phox. In this study, we have assembled and analyzed amino acid sequences of Nox regulatory subunit orthologs from vertebrates, a urochordate, an echinoderm, a mollusc, a cnidarian, a choanoflagellate, fungi and a slime mold amoeba to investigate the evolutionary history of these subunits.  相似文献

The marginal value theorem is an optimal foraging model that predicts how efficient foragers should respond to both their ecological and social environments when foraging in food patches, and it has strongly influenced hypotheses for primate behavior. Nevertheless, experimental tests of the marginal value theorem have been rare in primates and observational studies have provided conflicting support. As a step towards filling this gap, we test whether the foraging decisions of captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) adhere to the assumptions and qualitative predictions of the marginal value theorem. We presented 12 adult chimpanzees with a two-patch foraging environment consisting of both low-quality (i.e., low-food density) and high-quality (i.e., high-food density) patches and examined the effect of patch quality on their search behavior, foraging duration, marginal capture rate, and its proxy measures: giving-up density and giving-up time. Chimpanzees foraged longer in high-quality patches, as predicted. In contrast to predictions, they did not depress high-quality patches as thoroughly as low-quality patches. Furthermore, since chimpanzees searched in a manner that fell between systematic and random, their intake rates did not decline at a steady rate over time, especially in high-quality patches, violating an assumption of the marginal value theorem. Our study provides evidence that chimpanzees are sensitive to their rate of energy intake and that their foraging durations correlate with patch quality, supporting many assumptions underlying primate foraging and social behavior. However, our results question whether the marginal value theorem is a constructive model of chimpanzee foraging behavior, and we suggest a Bayesian foraging framework (i.e., combining past foraging experiences with current patch sampling information) as a potential alternative. More work is needed to build an understanding of the proximate mechanisms underlying primate foraging decisions, especially in more complex socioecological environments.  相似文献

Background  

Within-host competition between strains of a vector-borne pathogen can affect strain frequencies in both the host and vector, thereby affecting viral population dynamics. However little is known about inter-strain competition in one of the most genetically diverse and epidemiologically important mosquito-borne RNA virus: dengue virus (DENV). To assess the strength and symmetry of intra-host competition among different strains of DENV, the effect of mixed infection of two DENV serotypes, DENV2 and DENV4, on the replication of each in cultured mosquito cells was tested. The number of infectious particles produced by each DENV strain in mixed infections was compared to that in single infections to determine whether replication of each strain was decreased in the presence of the other strain (i.e., competition). The two DENV strains were added to cells either simultaneously (coinfection) or with a 1 or 6-hour time lag between first and second serotype (superinfection).  相似文献

Although tool use occurs in diverse species, its complexity may mark an important distinction between humans and other animals. Chimpanzee tool use has many similarities to that seen in humans, yet evidence of the cumulatively complex and constructive technologies common in human populations remains absent in free-ranging chimpanzees. Here we provide the first evidence that chimpanzees have a latent capacity to socially learn to construct a composite tool. Fifty chimpanzees were assigned to one of five demonstration conditions that varied in the amount and type of information available in video footage of a conspecific. Chimpanzees exposed to complete footage of a chimpanzee combining the two components to retrieve a reward learned to combine the tools significantly more than those exposed to more restricted information. In a follow-up test, chimpanzees that constructed tools after watching the complete demonstration tended to do so even when the reward was within reach of the unmodified components, whereas those that spontaneously solved the task (without seeing the modification process) combined only when necessary. Social learning, therefore, had a powerful effect in instilling a marked persistence in the use of a complex technique at the cost of efficiency, inhibiting insightful tool use.  相似文献

The NADPH oxidase of phagocytes catalyzes the conversion of oxygen to O2(-). This multicomponent enzyme complex contains five essential protein components, two in the membrane and three in the cytosol. Unassembled and inactive in resting phagocytes, the oxidase becomes active after translocation of cytosolic components to the membrane to assemble a functional oxidase. Multiple factors regulate its assembly and activity, thus serving to maintain this highly reactive system under spatial and temporal control until recruited for antimicrobial or proinflammatory events. The recent identification of homologs of one of the membrane components in nonphagocytic cells will expand understanding of the biological contexts in which this system may function.  相似文献

In contrast to the rapid, ethanol-inhibited superoxide generation by the receptor-linked agonist formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP), fluoride-activated superoxide generation occurs after a prolonged lag, and as shown herein is relatively ethanol-insensitive. We have investigated fluoride-activation of diradylglycerol generation and phospholipase D activity. Fluoride induces a very large increase in diradylglycerol mass (both 1,2-diacylglycerol (DAG) and 1-O-alkyl,2-acylglycerol (EAG)), with kinetics similar to superoxide generation. Unlike fMLP-activated diglyceride generation which is completely inhibited by ethanol, that produced by fluoride is only partially (30%) blocked. When the phosphatidylcholine pool is 3H-prelabeled, fluoride activates both [3H]phosphatidic acid (PA) and [3H]diglyceride generation with similar kinetics. Partial inhibition of the production of these species by ethanol was seen, coincident with the appearance of [3H]phosphatidylethanol, indicating phospholipase D-dependent transphosphatidylation had occurred. The data are consistent with the fluoride activation of PA and diglyceride generation by both phospholipase D-dependent and -independent (presumably phospholipase C) mechanisms.  相似文献

The relative abilities of ATP and GTP to support succinyl-CoA synthesis by mitochondrial matrix fractions prepared from rabbit heart and liver mitoplasts were investigated. The activity supported by ATP in rabbit heart preparations was less than 15% of that obtained with GTP, while no ATP-supported activity was observed in rabbit liver preparations. However, the addition of 30 micromolar GDP to matrix fractions from either heart or liver stimulated the ATP-supported activity to 40% of that observed with GTP, and the further addition of bovine liver nucleoside diphosphate kinase in the presence of 8 microM added GDP increased the activity to near that observed with GTP. The specific activity of nucleoside diphosphate kinase assayed directly in mitochondrial matrix from heart was about 15% of the specific activity of ATP-supported succinate thiokinase induced upon adding GDP. Evidence for a complex between nucleoside diphosphate kinase and succinate thiokinase in mitochondrial matrix from rabbit heart was obtained by glycerol density gradient centrifugation. It is proposed that binding of nucleoside diphosphate kinase to succinate thiokinase activates the former enzyme, accounts for the ATP-supported succinyl-CoA synthetase activity observed, and is involved in the channeling of high energy phosphate from GTP produced in the Krebs cycle to the ATP pool.  相似文献
