The males of four species of the Asian frog genus Limnonectes [Limnonectes dabanus (Smith, 1922a), Limnonectes gyldenstolpei (Andersson, 1916), Limnonectes macrognathus (Boulenger, 1917), and Limnonectes plicatellus (Stoliczka, 1873)] exhibit remarkable ornamentation in the form of a swollen, or cap‐like, structure (caruncle) on the top of their heads. These caruncles vary in their appearance among species, and neither their function nor their actual systematic value is known. We compared their anatomy via dissections, morphometrics, radiography, and histology, and analysed the available mitochondrial DNA sequences as well as new data to place these species within the context of a larger phylogenetic hypothesis for Limnonectes. Despite the externally different morphology, the underlying histological structure is virtually identical. Beneath skin that is densely packed with mucous glands lies a pad of connective tissue overlaying the parietal bone. The actual function of the caruncle, however, remains enigmatic. In addition to the presence of the caruncle, independent evidence from osteological characters and molecular data support the monophyly of a clade comprising of L. dabanus, L. gyldenstolpei, L. macrognathus, and L. plicatellus. The caruncles are therefore interpreted as a robust autapomorphy for this clade, and suggest that the subgenus Elachyglossa should be restricted to the four species in question. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London 相似文献

Approximately 550 to 600 yersiniosis patients are reported annually in Sweden. Although pigs are thought to be the main reservoir of food-borne pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica, the role of pork meat as a vehicle for transmission to humans is still unclear. Pork meat collected from refrigerators and local shops frequented by yersiniosis patients (n = 48) were examined for the presence of pathogenic Yersinia spp. A combined culture and PCR method was used for detection, and a multiplex PCR was developed and evaluated as a tool for efficient identification of pathogenic food and patient isolates. The results obtained with the multiplex PCR were compared to phenotypic test results and confirmed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). In all, 118 pork products (91 raw and 27 ready-to-eat) were collected. Pathogenic Yersinia spp. were detected by PCR in 10% (9 of 91) of the raw pork samples (loin of pork, fillet of pork, pork chop, ham, and minced meat) but in none of the ready-to-eat products. Isolates of Y. enterocolitica bioserotype 4/O:3 were recovered from six of the PCR-positive raw pork samples; all harbored the virulence plasmid. All isolates were recovered from food collected in shops and, thus, none were from the patients' home. When subjected to PFGE, the six isolates displayed four different NotI profiles. The same four NotI profiles were also present among isolates recovered from the yersiniosis patients. The application of a multiplex PCR was shown to be an efficient tool for identification of pathogenic Y. enterocolitica isolates in naturally contaminated raw pork. 相似文献

The use of biomechanical methods to quantify functional/physiological parameters in malnourished humans can provide new insights into the understanding of effects of malnutrition on human muscles. Therefore, a transportable ankle ergometer device was developed, which allows the quantification of mechanical properties of the human plantarflexor muscles in field experiments. More precisely, the ergometer quantifies isometric force in static conditions and musculotendinous stiffness in dynamic conditions. This latter parameter is obtained by the quick-release technique. The aim of the study was first to conduct a reproducibility study on musculotendinous stiffness. Seven healthy subjects were tested three times in alternate days. The results showed the well-known linear relationship between musculotendinous stiffness and torque, where the slope was used as a stiffness index (SI(MT)). Individual regression line comparison indicated that SI(MT) values were not significantly different between the three repeated measurements (P>0.05). Mean coefficient of variation was 4.5+/-1.0%. The individual SI(MT) data were within the range of those reported in the literature. The reproducibility study showed that the quantification of musculotendinous stiffness by means of the quick-release technique is a reliable method, using a transportable ankle ergometer device. 相似文献

Reflex and elastic properties of the triceps surae (TS) were measured on 12 male cosmonauts 28-40 days before a 3- to 6-mo spaceflight, 2 or 3 days after return (R+2/+3) and a few days later (R+5/+6). H reflexes to electrical stimulations and T reflexes to tendon taps gave the reflex excitability at rest. Under voluntary contractions, reflex excitability was assessed by the stretch reflex, elicited by sinusoidal length perturbations. Stiffness measurements concerned the musculoarticular system in passive conditions and the musculotendinous complex in active conditions. Results indicated 1) no changes (P > 0.05) in H reflexes, whatever the day of test, and 2) increase in T reflexes (P < 0.05) by 57%, despite a decrease (P < 0.05) in musculoarticular stiffness (11%) on R+2/+3. T reflexes decreased (P < 0.05) between R+2/+3 and R+5/+6 (-21%); 3) increase in stretch reflexes (P < 0.05) on R+2/+3 by 31%, whereas it decreased (P < 0.05) between R+2/+3 and R+5/+6 (-29%). Musculotendinous stiffness was increased (P < 0.05) whatever the day of test (25%). Links between changes in reflex and stiffness were also studied by considering individual data. At R+2/+3, correlated changes between T reflexes and musculoarticular stiffness suggested that, besides central adaptive phenomena, musculoarticular structures took part in the reflex adaptation. This mechanical contribution was confirmed when data collected at R+2/+3 and R+5/+6 were used because correlations between changes in stretch reflexes and musculotendinous stiffness were improved. In conclusion, the present study shows that peripheral influences take part in reflex changes in gravitational unloaded muscles, but can only be revealed when central influences are reduced. 相似文献

True mimicry is an extremely rare phenomenon in cockroaches, with beetles as their favorite models. So far, only very few Pseudophyllodromiinae could be identified that conform to all requirements for Batesian mimicry and similarly exist only isolated reports on Müllerian mimicry. The vast majority, however, of the so‐called beetle‐mimicking cockroaches only shows a high degree of generalized convergence regarding their outer appearance. Specific models or counterparts, respectively, are lacking. Here we report on a last instar nymph of an undescribed Blattinae (Blattodea: Blattidae) that accurately mimics a truly harmful, sympatric carabid beetle. Although no indications for inedibility of this cockroach became evident, thus making Batesian mimicry likely, Müllerian mimicry can not be excluded with certainty. At any rate, this represents both the first case of mimicry in Blattidae and the first case with a ground beetle (Carabidae) as model for a cockroach mimic. 相似文献

Protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania adapt to their arthropod and vertebrate hosts through the development of defined life cycle stages. Stage differentiation is triggered by environmental stress factors and has been linked to parasite chaperone activities. Using a null mutant approach we previously revealed important, nonredundant functions of the cochaperone cyclophilin 40 in L. donovani‐infected macrophages. Here, we characterized in more detail the virulence defect of cyp40?/? null mutants. In vitro viability assays, infection tests using macrophages, and mixed infection experiments ruled out a defect of cyp40?/? parasites in resistance to oxidative and hydrolytic stresses encountered inside the host cell phagolysosome. Investigation of the CyP40‐dependent proteome by quantitative 2D‐DiGE analysis revealed up regulation of various stress proteins in the null mutant, presumably a response to compensate for the lack of CyP40. Applying transmission electron microscopy we showed accumulation of vesicular structures in the flagellar pocket of cyp40?/? parasites that we related to a significant increase in exosome production, a phenomenon previously linked to the parasite stress response. Together these data suggest that cyp40?/? parasites experience important intrinsic homeostatic stress that likely abrogates parasite viability during intracellular infection. 相似文献

We show—in contrast to the traditional textbook contention—that the first amniote lungs were complex, multichambered organs and that the single-chambered lungs of lizards and snakes represent a secondarily simplified rather than the plesiomorphic condition. We combine comparative anatomical and embryological data and show that shared structural principles of multichamberedness are recognizable in amniotes including all lepidosaurian taxa. Sequential intrapulmonary branching observed during early organogenesis becomes obscured during subsequent growth, resulting in a secondarily simplified, functionally single-chambered lung in lepidosaurian adults. Simplification of pulmonary structure maximized the size of the smallest air spaces and eliminated biophysically compelling surface tension problems that were associated with miniaturization evident among stem lepidosaurmorphs. The remaining amniotes, however, retained the multichambered lungs, which allowed both large surface area and high pulmonary compliance, thus initially providing a strong selective advantage for efficient respiration in terrestrial environments. Branched, multichambered lungs instead of simple, sac-like organs were part and parcel of the respiratory apparatus of the first amniotes and pivotal for their success on dry land, with the sky literally as the limit. 相似文献
