Seasonal variations in tissue nitrogen, carbon, amino acids and ammonium were determined for the brown algae Macrocystis integrifolia Bory and Nereocystis luetkeana (Mertens) Pastels and Ruprecht, For M. integrifolia, the proportions of tissue nitrogen and carbon in blades, bulbs and stipes were also determined. The composition of the two algae in terms of the above constituents was similar. In addition, ammonium, nitrogen and protein-bound amino acids showed distinct seasonal trends with high values during the winter and low levels during the summer. The range for nitrogen was 0.8–3.0% and for proteins 7.6–11.7% of dry weight. In contrast, carbon content and C/N ratio showed the reverse trend with higher values during the summer and lower values during the winter. The range for carbon was 19–31% of dry weight, and the C/N ratio showed a range of 9–37. The free amino acids did not show any specific seasonably. Tissue nitrogen and carbon showed higher values in the blades than in the bulbs and stipes.  相似文献

Long-distance translocation of 125I in Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. followed a “source to sink” pattern. When the source of 125I was placed on the distal mature part of the blade, the translocation was unidirectional, basipetal and directed towards the meristematic region at the blade-stipe junction. When the source was placed directly at the meristem there was no movement of label distal to the meristem. The velocity of125I transport ranged from 2 to 3.5 cm · h?1. The anion I? seemed to be the only species of125I transported. An assay of iodine content in different parts of L. saccharina plant showed much higher levels of iodine in the meristem, stipe and holdfast than in the blade. This distribution concurs well with the pattern of I? translocation.  相似文献

The synthesis of metal nano materials with controllable geometry has received extensive attention of researchers from the past decade. In this study, we report an unexplored new route for rapid and facile biogenic synthesis of silver nanocubes (AgNCs) by systematic reduction of silver ions with crude clove (Syzygium aromaticum) extract at room temperature. The formation and plasmonic properties of AgNCs were observed and the UV–vis spectra show characteristic absorption peak of AgNCs with broaden region at 430 nm along with the intense (124), (686), (454) and (235) peak in X-ray diffraction pattern confirmed the formation and crystallinity of AgNCs. The average size of AgNC cubes were found to be in the range of ~80 to 150 nm and it was confirmed by particles size distribution, scanning and transmission electron microscopy with elemental detection by EDAX. Further FTIR spectra provide the various functional groups present in the S. aromaticum extract which are supposed to be responsible and participating in the reaction for the synthesis of AgNCs. The AgNCs casted over glass substrate show an electrical conductivity of ~0.55 × 106 S/m demonstrating AgNCs to be a potential next generation conducting material due to its high conductivity. This work provides a novel and effective approach to control the shape of silver nanomaterial for impending applications. The current synthesis mode is eco-friendly, low cost and promises different potential applications such as biosensing, nanoelectronics, etc.  相似文献

Abstract. Growth in the presence of retinoids was found to induce erythroid differentiation in Friend murine erythroleukemia (MEL) cells in culture. The program of differentiated functions expressed by retinoid-treated cells was quite similar to that promoted by other inducers of MEL cell differentiation. For example, 70% or more of induced cells synthesized hemoglobin which accumulated to a level of 8 μg–10 μg per 106 cells. The level of acetylcholinesterase activity increased two to five-fold in induced cells, and induction by retinoids, like induction by dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), promoted the appearance of cell surface lumps or 'blebs'. All-trans retinaldehyde, which promoted maximum hemoglobin and acetylcholinesterase synthesis at a concentration of 5 × 10−7 M, was found to be a more potent inducer than all-trans retinoic acid or retinol, which both showed maximum induction at 1 × 10−5 M. Like differentiation promoted by DMSO, retinoid-induced differentiation was inhibited by 10−7 M dexamethasone.  相似文献

The relative toxicity of different concentrations of temephos and fenthion with petroleum ether root extract of Solanum xanthocarpum (Schrader) at 1 : 1, 1 : 2 and 1 : 4 ratios was evaluated against Anopheles stephensi (Liston) larvae. All combinations exhibited antagonism at concentrations lower than LC50 values and synergism at concentrations higher than their LC90 values. A 1 : 1 product ratio was the most effective.  相似文献

Intertidal rocky reefs are complex and rich ecosystems that are vulnerable to even the smallest fluctuations in sea level. We modelled habitat loss associated with sea level rise for intertidal rocky reefs using GIS, high-resolution digital imagery, and LIDAR technology at fine-scale resolution (0.1 m per pixel). We used projected sea levels of +0.3 m, +0.5 m and +1.0 m above current Mean Low Tide Level (0.4 m). Habitat loss and changes were analysed for each scenario for five headlands in the Solitary Islands Marine Park (SIMP), Australia. The results indicate that changes to habitat extent will be variable across different shores and will not necessarily result in net loss of area for some habitats. In addition, habitat modification will not follow a regular pattern over the projected sea levels. Two of the headlands included in the study currently have the maximum level of protection within the SIMP. However, these headlands are likely to lose much of the habitat known to support biodiverse assemblages and may not continue to be suitable sanctuaries into the future. The fine-scale approach taken in this study thus provides a protocol not only for modelling habitat modification but also for future proofing conservation measures under a scenario of changing sea levels.  相似文献

We report the NMR solution structure of a synthetic 40-mer (T377-E416) that encompasses human cannabinoid receptor-1 (hCB1) transmembrane helix 7 (TMH7) and helix 8 (H8) [hCB1(TMH7/H8)] in 30% trifluoroethanol/H2O. Structural features include, from the peptide’s amino terminus, a hydrophobic α-helix (TMH7); a loop-like, 11 residue segment featuring a pronounced Pro-kink within the conserved NPxxY motif; a short amphipathic α-helix (H8) orthogonal to TMH7 with cationic and hydrophobic amino-acid clusters; and an unstructured C-terminal end. The hCB1(TMH7/H8) NMR solution structure suggests multiple electrostatic amino-acid interactions, including an intrahelical H8 salt bridge and a hydrogen-bond network involving the peptide’s loop-like region. Potential cation-π and cation-phenolic OH interactions between Y397 in the TMH7 NPxxY motif and R405 in H8 are identified as candidate structural forces promoting interhelical microdomain formation. This microdomain may function as a flexible molecular hinge during ligand-induced hCB1 conformer transitions.  相似文献
