We predicted future plague and black-tailed prairie dog dynamics in the North American prairies under different scenarios of climate change. A climate-driven model for the joint dynamic of the host–parasite system was used. Projections for the regional climate were obtained through empirical–statistical downscaling of global climate scenarios generated by an ensemble of global climate models for the recent Fourth Assessment Report by the IPCC. The study shows the uncertainties involved in predicting future regional climate and climate-driven population dynamics, but reveals that unchanged or lower levels of plague, leading to increased black-tailed prairie dog colonies, can be expected. Less plague is particularly expected for scenarios that assume the highest emission of greenhouse gases associated with the greatest projected future warming. Moreover, under high-emission scenarios, decreased probabilities of extremely high numbers of infected colonies are expected, along with decreased probabilities of extremely low total numbers of colonies. The assumed main underlying mechanism is an inhibiting effect of high temperatures on fleas (dispersal vector) and on flea-mediated transmission of the disease-causing bacterium. Our study highlights the importance of using dynamic ecological (here host–parasite) models together with ensembles of climate projections to investigate the responses of populations and parasites to a changed climate.  相似文献

Hyalopterus pruni is an invasive aphid pest in California. To study the population biology of this pest both in California and its native Mediterranean region, we have developed 11 di‐ and tri‐nucleotide repeat microsatellite markers. Each locus amplified in individuals representing the full range of geographical regions and host plants where Hyalopterus is found. Polymorphism was high, ranging from six to 22 alleles per locus in the individuals screened. These loci represent the first microsatellites developed for Hyalopterus and they should be of great value in studying the invasion biology and population structure of this insect pest.  相似文献

Background  

Plant genetic resources (PGR) are the basic raw materials for future genetic progress and an insurance against unforeseen threats to agricultural production. An extensive characterization of PGR provides an opportunity to dissect structure, mine allelic variations, and identify diverse accessions for crop improvement. The Generation Challenge Program conceptualized the development of "composite collections" and extraction of "reference sets" from these for more efficient tapping of global crop-related genetic resources. In this study, we report the genetic structure, diversity and allelic richness in a composite collection of chickpea using SSR markers, and formation of a reference set of 300 accessions.  相似文献

Three species of dwarf, prostrate willow ( Salix arctica , S. rotundifolia and S. herbacea ) were subjected to experimental summer warming in high arctic Canada, arctic Alaska, and subarctic Sweden, respectively, as part of the International Tundra Experiment. Phenological and growth responses of these species were compared for the second season of the experiment. Stigmas became receptive and pollen dispersal occurred significantly earlier for S. rotundifolia and S. herbacea in the ITEX open-top chambers, but not for S. arctica . Warming had no effect on the timing of seed dispersal, leaf yellowing, or leaf senescence. The length and dry weight of the largest leaves were greater for warmed plants, and was significant for S. rotundifolia . The number of catkins/plot did not differ among species or treatments, but the fruit : flower ratio was reduced in the experimental plots.  相似文献

Cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS) condenses homocysteine, a toxic metabolite, with serine in a pyridoxal phosphate-dependent reaction. It also contains a heme cofactor to which carbon monoxide (CO) or nitric oxide can bind, resulting in enzyme inhibition. To understand the mechanism of this regulation, we have investigated the equilibria and kinetics of CO binding to the highly active catalytic core of CBS, which is dimeric. CBS exhibits strong anticooperativity in CO binding with successive association constants of 0.24 and 0.02 microm(-1). Stopped flow measurements reveal slow CO association (0.0166 s(-1)) limited by dissociation of the endogenous ligand, Cys-52. Rebinding of CO and of Cys-52 following CO photodissociation were independently monitored via time-resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy. The Cys-52 rebinding rate, 4000 s(-1), is essentially unchanged between pH 7.6 and 10.5, indicating that the pK(a) of Cys-52 is shifted below pH 7.6. This effect is attributed to the nearby Arg-266 residue, which is proposed to form a salt bridge with the dissociated Cys-52, thereby inhibiting its protonation and slowing rebinding to the Fe. This salt bridge suggests a pathway for enzyme inactivation upon CO binding, because Arg-266 is located on a helix that connects the heme and pyridoxal phosphate cofactor domains.  相似文献

Ultrastructural analysis of the gel forming green seaweed sulfated polysaccharide ulvan revealed a spherical‐based morphology (10–18 nm diameter) more or less aggregated in aqueous solution. At pH 13 in TBAOH (tetrabutyl ammonium hydroxyde) or NaOH, ulvan formed an open gel‐like structure or a continuous film by fusion or coalescence of bead‐like structures, while in acidic pH conditions, ulvan appeared as dispersed beads. Low concentrations of sodium chloride, copper or boric acid induced the formation of aggregates. These results highlight the hydrophobic and aggregative behavior of ulvan that are discussed in regard to the peculiar gel formation and the low intrinsic viscosity of the polysaccharide in aqueous solution. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The chemical structure and the sequence of repeating units in ulvans of similar compositions from two different Ulva rigida samples collected in the Canary Islands and in Brittany were studied after ulvan-lyase degradation and NMR spectroscopic analysis of the reaction products. Both ulvans were composed of ulvanobiuronic acid 3-sulfate type A [-->4)-beta-D-GlcA-(1-->4)-alpha-L-Rha 3-sulfate-(1-->] (symbolised as A3s) and contained disaccharides composed of [-->4)-beta-D-Xyl-(1-->4)-alpha-L-Rha 3-sulfate-(1-->] and [-->4)-beta-D-Xyl 2-sulfate-(1-->4)-alpha-L-Rha 3-sulfate], respectively referred to as ulvanobiose 3-sulfate (U3s) and ulvanobiose 2',3-disulfate (U2's,3s). In the Canary Islands sample, these U3s and U2's,3s occurred dispersed among A3s sequences and as short blocks of two or three units. In contrast, in the Brittany samples, these units were dispersed among A3s structures and next to A3s units branched at O-2 of alpha-L-Rha 3-sulfate by a terminal beta-D-GlcA and symbolised as A2g,3s. However, more complex structures are likely to occur in the enzyme resistant fraction remaining from this ulvan. An average structure sequence of these two ulvans was proposed. The transposition of the 13C NMR data of the new identified structures to the parent polysaccharides was not possible, probably due to the different sequence distributions affecting the carbons chemical shifts.  相似文献

Morphology and polysaccharide characterization of Gelidium sesquipedale (Clem.) Bornet et Thuret were studied in cultures grown under various light qualities. White light (WL), blue light (BL) and red light (RL) (all at photon fluence rate of 40 μmol m-2 s-1) were used for the study of morphological characteristics, and in addition yellow light (YL) for polysaccharide characterization. RL and BL induced a proliferating growth, which resulted in bushy plants under RL. Cortical cells of BL-grown plants were smaller and presented a higher density per unit area, whereas those of WL- and RL-grown alga were larger. Medullary cells followed the inverse pattern. Light quality also affected polysaccharide yield and composition, with the yield being higher under BL, RL or YL than WL. Most of the polysaccharide was extracted in distilled water at 100 °C, while a low amount was solubilized at 22 °C and 120 °C. Extracts from BL-grown alga presented the highest galactan content. The starch concentration was lower in extracts from RL-, BL- and YL-cultivated alga than in those from the initial plants. The degree of substitution with methoxyl groups and precursor was very low in all the agar fractions, but fractions extracted from BL- and WL-grown alga were more substituted by precursor. The highest sulfate content was reached under BL (about 9% w/w) and the highest 2-O-methyl-3,6-anhydro-L-galactose and 6-O-methyl-D-galactose content were found in extracts from alga grown under YL.
