Temporal and climate‐related changes in avian phenology were assessed for seven species of south‐eastern Australia using data obtained from members of the public, naturalist groups and other organizations. Despite significantly warmer temperatures (~0.02–0.03°C per year) and reduced rainfall (~1.6–8.0 mm per year) over much of south‐eastern Australia in recent decades, most species showed no corresponding trends in their timing of migration or breeding, the notable exceptions being the grey fantail (Rhipidura fuliginosa) and the flame robin (Petroica phoenicea), which migrate through Melbourne, Victoria, during autumn and spring. In many species, however, migration or breeding timing appeared to be influenced to some extent by local, rather than regional, climate conditions, particularly local daily maximum and minimum temperatures. Whether these species will noticeably change their phenology to match projected changes in climate, perhaps when a currently unknown climate threshold is crossed, or whether these species are sufficiently flexible in their foraging strategies or food sources to be able to maintain their current timing, remains to be seen.  相似文献

Tropical savannas are typically highly productive yet fire‐prone ecosystems, and it has been suggested that reducing fire frequency in savannas could substantially increase the size of the global carbon sink. However, the long‐term demographic consequences of modifying fire regimes in savannas are difficult to predict, with the effects of fire on many parameters, such as tree growth rates, poorly understood. Over 10 years, we examined the effects of fire frequency on the growth rates (annual increment of diameter at breast height) of 3075 tagged trees, at 137 locations throughout the mesic savannas of Kakadu, Nitmiluk and Litchfield National Parks, in northern Australia. Frequent fires substantially reduced tree growth rates, with the magnitude of the effect markedly increasing with fire severity. The highest observed frequencies of mild, moderate and severe fires (1.0, 0.8 and 0.4 fires yr?1, respectively) reduced tree growth by 24%, 40% and 66% respectively, relative to unburnt areas. These reductions in tree growth imply reductions in the net primary productivity of trees by between 0.19 t C ha?1 yr?1, in the case of mild fires, and 0.51 t C ha?1 yr?1, in the case of severe fires. Such reductions are relatively large, given that net biome productivity (carbon sequestration potential) of these savannas is estimated to be just 1–2 t C ha?1 yr?1. Our results suggest that current models of savanna tree demography, that do not account for a relationship between severe fire frequency and tree growth rate, are likely to underestimate the long‐term negative effects of frequent severe fires on tree populations. Additionally, the negative impact of frequent severe fires on carbon sequestration rates may have been underestimated; reducing fire frequencies in savannas may increase carbon sequestration to a greater extent than previously thought.  相似文献

The Wollemi Pine ( Wollemia nobilis , Araucariaceae) was discovered in 1994 in a remote area of the Wollemi National Park (New South Wales, Australia). With only around 40 adult trees known to be growing in the wild, it is one of the worlds rarest plant species. The results of the first cytological study are reported, including a chromosome count (2n = 2x = 26), karyotype illustration and nuclear DNA C-value (4C = 55.74 pg), obtained using Feulgen microdensitometry. The results are compared with data available on species in the other two genera of the Araucariaceae, Araucaria and Agathis , and with other gymnosperms  相似文献

We present field observations of carbon isotope discrimination (Δ) and internal conductance of CO2 ( g i) collected using tunable diode laser spectroscopy (TDL). Δ ranged from 12.0 to 27.4‰ over diurnal periods with daily means from 16.3 ± 0.2‰ during drought to 19.0 ± 0.5‰ during monsoon conditions. We observed a large range in g i, with most estimates between 0.04 and 4.0  µ mol m−2 s−1 Pa−1. We tested the comprehensive Farquhar, O'Leary and Berry model of Δ (Δcomp), a simplified form of Δcompsimple) and a recently suggested amendment (Δrevised). Sensitivity analyses demonstrated that varying g i had a substantial effect on Δcomp, resulting in mean differences between observed Δ (Δobs) and Δcomp ranging from 0.04 to 9.6‰. First-order regressions adequately described the relationship between Δ and the ratio of substomatal to atmospheric CO2 partial pressure ( p i/ p a) on all 3 d, but second-order models better described the relationship in July and August. The three tested models each best predicted Δobs on different days. In June, Δsimple outperformed Δcomp and Δrevised, but incorporating g i and all non-photosynthetic fractionations improved model predictions in July and August.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Unionid clams from Narrow Lake, Alberta, were collected to quantify the natural variation in growth, to assess the natural variation in abundance, age and size distribution, and growth with water depth in the lake, and to conduct in situ experiments to directly test the effects of water depth (temperature) and clam abundance on clam growth. 2. The unionid clam, Anodonta grandis simpsoniana, showed wide variation in length at a given age. There were no significant differences in growth between clams collected at 1,3, 5, and 7m depths in the lake despite marked differences in water temperature. The wide variation in clam biomass within each depth zone may have masked possible effects of water depth. 3. The effect of water depth and variation in clam density on clam growth was tested directly by stocking clams into small enclosures at densities equivalent to 50, 150, 250, 350 and 450g m-2 (live weight) at each of 1, 3, 5 and 7 m depths in Narrow Lake (each depth and abundance treatment in triplicate). A uniform sandy substrate was used in all enclosures to eliminate any possible effect of substrate type on growth. 4. Mortality was negligible (0.9%) during the experiment. Clam density had no significant effect on clam growth which suggests that clam growth was not food limited in the lake. 5. Clams reared at 7 m grew more slowly than clams reared at 1, 3 and 5 m. Clams reared at 5 m grew more slowly than clams reared at 1 and 3m. Growth of clams reared at 1 and 3m did not differ. These differences in growth were strongly correlated with the measured differences in water temperature between depths. 6. Migration between depths probably accounts for the lack of a depth effect on clams growing in the natural habitat.  相似文献

The plasma membrane H+-ATPase couples ATP hydrolysis to protontransport thereby establishing the driving force for solutetransport into and out of plant cells. As such, this enzymeparticipates in a number of cellular processes important tothe overall physiology of plants. From biochemical studies andthe recent application of molecular approaches, the enzyme reactionmechanism and structure of this protein have been characterized.However, our basic understanding of how this enzyme links theendergonic reaction of ATP hydrolysis to proton translocationis far from complete. In this review, several significant questionsregarding the energy coupling mechanism will be addressed interms of information available on the plant plasma membraneH+-ATPase and from studies on other P-type transport ATPases.These questions focus on the chemical nature of proton translocation,how this is linked or driven by the ATP hydrolysis reactionand what role, if any, K+ has in the transport process. The phylogeny of the Rhinocerotoidea (Mammalia, Perissodactyla)   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A new phylogeny of the Superfamily Rhinocerotoidea is proposed, based upon an analysis of shared derived characters of the skull, teeth and skeleton. Hyrachyus is considered the primitive sister-taxon of the three rhinocerotoid families (Amynodontidae, Hyracodontidae, Rhinocerotidae), and the amynodonts appear to be the sister-group of hyracodonts and rhinocerotids. The relationships of primitive hyracodonts and rhinocerotids are clarified. Menoceras and Pleuroceras (new Subfamily Menoceratinae) are removed from the Diceratheriinae, since they appear to be more closely related to higher rhinoceroses than they are to Diceratherium. Of the three major monophyletic groups of higher rhinocerotids (aceratherines, teleoceratines and rhinocerotines), the last two groups are more closely related to each other than either is to aceratherines. Toxotherium and Schizotheroides are tentatively removed from the Rhinocerotoidea and placed in the Lophiodontidae.  相似文献

Sweet potato plants were found to develop three alternativestorage sink sites: adventitious roots, replanted tubers andstems, indicating that the capacity for tuberization is notlimited to the root system.
