Two spectacular new orchid species from the semi-arid Karoo region of South Africa are described here. Both have been confused with Satyrium erectum Sw. in the past, yet have clear diagnostic characters which justify their recognition as distinct species. Satyrium pulchrumS. Johnson & Kurzweil sp. nov. , known only from an isolated granite inselberg in Namaqualand, appears to be the sister taxon to S. erectum, whereas Satyrium pallens S. Johnson & Kurzweil sp. nov. , known from several populations along the southern margins of the Karoo, has closer affinities to Saprium longicolleLindl. These four species form a distinct monophyletic group characterized by several synapomorphies. The allopatric distribution pattern and considerable divergence in floral characters of the sister species suggest that speciation involved shifts in the pollination system of geographically isolated populations.  相似文献

Abstract. A crop growth model incorporating leaf area expansion and senescence is constructed. Leaf area is treated as an independent state variable with the incremental specific leaf area a function of the storage/structure ratio. The vegetative grass crop, which usually has three green leaves per tiller, is particularly considered; the above-ground dry matter is assumed to occupy four compartments: growing leaves, first fully expanded leaves, second fully expanded leaves, and senescing leaves. Each compartment is described by two state variables—structural weight and leaf area index. Newly synthesized structural material comprises leaf, sheath and stem in fixed proportions, although defoliation can alter these proportions in the standing crop. Photosynthesis and respiration are calculated in the usual way. Root growth, root: shoot partitioning, soil water and nutrients are assumed to be relatively unimportant for an established vegetative grass crop grown under favourable conditions. The model is used to simulate the time course of dry matter and leaf area development for crops that are exposed to a constant environment, a seasonally varying environment, and are defoliated.  相似文献

There is controversy as to whether the mature fruit of Erythroxylumcoca var. coca Lam. contains the cocaine alkaloid (benzoylmethylecgonine).In the present study, cocaine was monitored to determine ifit was present in embryos and endosperms of mature fruit ofE. coca var. coca Lam., and if present, the time required forde novo synthesis in imbibing seed. Seeds from mature fruitof E. coca were dissected to separate the embryos from the endosperms.The separated embryos and endosperms were analysed for cocaine.Subsequently, endosperms and embryos from seed imbibed. undera light and dark treatment were separated on days 3, 6, 9, 12and 15 and analysed for cocaine. Cocaine was present in embryos(0.005% of d. wt) and endosperms (0–001% of d. wt) ofmature fruit of E. coca. De novo synthesis of cocaine occurredonly in embryos of seed imbibed under light after day 9 of imbibition. Abstract. Acid phosphatase was found cytochemically in intercellular spaces in the root of Nymphoides peltata. Different methods, using lead salts and azo-dyes, gave similar results. Reaction product appeared on material, possibly cytoplasmic, within the intercellular spaces and also against the outer walls of cells which formed the intercellular spaces. Possible functions of acid phosphatase in intercellular spaces are discussed.  相似文献

Nitrate uptake and the subsequent induction of in vivo nitratereductase activity in wheat were studied by investigating aeuploid and certain ditelosomic stocks which exhibited in vivoactivity significantly greater than that of the euploid. Thekinetics of nitrate uptake were investigated, but the high activitiesof the ditelosomics were not caused by increased uptake of nitrate,although ditelo-7BL exhibited unusual uptake dynamics. Analysisof the induction of nitrate reductase activity revealed a biphasicgeneral pattern, with an initial rapid phase being followedby a slower but longer period of induction. The induction rateover the second period, although responsible for only a minorproportion of the total activity induced, was positively correlatedwith the final nitrate reductase level, unlike the rate overthe first induction period. Several stocks exhibited high inductionrates over one or other of the two phases, while ditelo- 1 Asshowed an abnormal monophasic induction pattern. At the endof the second period of induction, nitrate reductase activitybecame more or less steady, except for activity fluctuationsassociated with the time of application of induction stimuli.  相似文献

Identification of Surface Proteins on Viable Plasmodium knowlesi Merozoites   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Viable merozoites of Plasmodium knowlesi were isolated and the proteins that were labeled on intact merozoites by lactoperoxidase-catalyzed radioiodination were identified. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and autoradiography of Triton soluble extracts of labeled merozoites demonstrated eight major bands ranging in apparent molecular weight from 150,000 D to 22,000 D. Exposure of intact merozoites to trypsin (10 μg/ml) for 10 min resulted in the loss of the two highest molecular weight proteins (150,000 D and 105,000 D) and the appearance of two new bands at 70,000 D and 62,000 D. Trypsin treatment under these conditions also removed the receptor(s) for merozoite attachment to erythrocytes. Therefore, these high molecular weight proteins are candidates for the merozoite component that attaches to erythrocytes. There was no evidence that the labeled membrane components were serum or erythrocyte membrane components, two potential contaminants in the preparation. Anti-rhesus erythrocyte antibody did not precipitate labeled merozoite proteins. Furthermore, the immunoprecipitation of labeled merozoite proteins by rhesus anti-merozoite serum was not inhibited by erythrocyte ghosts.  相似文献

The Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus is one of the few bird species that undergoes two primary moults a year, a post-nuptial moult in the breeding area and a moult in the wintering area. Primary-moult data for Willow Warblers from Finland, Sweden, Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium. Guinea-Bissau, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa are analysed. The parameters of primary moult (mean starting date, standard deviation of starting date, and duration) are estimated using the techniques of Underhill & Zucchini (T.988 Ibis 1 30: 358–372) and Underhill, Zucchini & Summers (1990 Ibis 132: 118-12 3). The scheduling of moult in relation to theother main components of the annual cycle, breeding and migration, is considered. The mean durations of post-nuptial moult for P. t. trochilus and P. t. acredula are 36.5 and 38.3 days, respectively; the start and termination of moult for P. t. trochilus are about 3.5 days later for each degree of latitude northwards, and the start and termination of moult for P. t. acredula, are about 10 days later than that of the most northerly populations of P. t. trochilus studied. Females start their postnuptial moult about 10 days later than males. Southward migration commences as soon as post-nuptial moult is complete. There is an increasing constraint on the timing of breeding and post-nuptial moult events at higher latitudes, leading to overlap between them. The duration of pre-nuptial moult is longer than that of post-nuptial moult, and is completed shortly prior to northward migration.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Eimeria bateri Bhatia, Pandey, Pande, 1965 is described from the Hungarian quail Coturnix c. coturnix for the first time in the U.S. Its oocysts are either ellipsoidal or ovoid, 14–28 by 12–19 μ with a mean of 20.5 by 15.3 μ. Its sporocysts are elongate ovoid, with a Stieda body, 8–12 by 6–9 μ with a mean of 10.3 by 7.5 μ. Two coccidia-free chicks 8 days old were inoculated with 50,000 oocysts each of E. bateri, but patent infections did not occur. This coccidium is therefore presumably host-specific.  相似文献
