In Daucus carota L. (Apiaceae) the florets comprising the central umbellet of inflorescences are usually pink or dark purple, presenting a marked contrast to the surrounding umbellets, which are generally white. The number of dark florets varies, and some inflorescences have no dark florets. It has been proposed that the dark florets function as an insect mimic, and in so doing serve to attract insects to the flower. In contrast, other authors, Darwin included, suggest that they are functionally redundant. The present study examined whether the dark florets attract insects, and also whether this effect can be replicated by replacing these florets with an insect. At the study site in Portugal the predominant insect visitor was the beetle Anthrenus verbasci L. (Dermestidae), which is similar in size and shape to the dark florets. Large inflorescences and those with more dark florets attracted more beetles than small inflorescences and those with fewer or no dark florets. Inflorescences with the dark florets removed attracted fewer beetles visitors compared with intact inflorescences. Inflorescences in which the dark florets were replaced with one or a cluster of five dead, freeze-killed A. verbasci attracted more beetles than inflorescences from which the dark florets had been removed. Replacement of the dark florets with a relatively large Meloid beetle resulted in the attraction of markedly fewer A. verbasci . We conclude that the dark florets can act as an insect attractant for some insect groups by acting as an insect mimic, and that they are adaptive, in contrast to the speculations of Darwin.  相似文献

We report on the characterization and mapping of 76 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers for Lolium perenne. These markers are publicly available or obtained either from genomic libraries enriched for SSR motifs or L. perenne expressed sequence tag (EST) clones. Four L. perenne mapping populations were used to map the SSR markers. A consensus linkage map of the four mapping populations containing 65 of the SSR markers is presented, together with primer information and a quality score indicating the usefulness of the SSR marker in different populations. The SSR markers identified all seven L. perenne linkage groups.  相似文献

In mammals, ‘female‐biased’ sexual size dimorphism (SSD), in which females are larger than males, is uncommon. In the present study, we examined Sylvilagus, a purported case of female‐biased SSD, for evolutionary correlations among species between SSD, body‐size, and life‐history variables. We find that: (1) although most species are female‐biased, the degree and direction of SSD vary more than was previously recognized and (2) the degree of SSD decreases with increasing body size. Hence, Sylvilagus provides a new example, unusual for a female‐biased taxon, in which allometry for SSD is consistent with ‘Rensch's Rule’. As a corollary to Rensch's Rule, we observe that changes in SSD in Sylvilagus are typically associated with larger, more significant changes in males than females. Female‐biased SSD could be produced by selection for larger females, smaller males, or both. Although larger female size may be related to high fecundity and the extremely rapid fetal and neonatal growth in Sylvilagus, we find little evidence for a correlation between SSD and various fecundity‐related traits in among‐species comparisons. Smaller male size may confer greater reproductive success through greater mobility and reduced energetic requirements. We propose that a suite of traits (female dispersion, large male home ranges, reduced aggression, and a promiscuous mating system) has favoured smaller males and thus influenced the evolution of SSD in cottontails. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 141–156.  相似文献

Understanding nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes from grain–legume crops in semiarid and arid regions is necessary if we are to improve our knowledge of global terrestrial N2O losses resulting from biological N2 fixation. N2O fluxes were measured from a rain‐fed soil, cropped to a grain–legume in a semiarid region of southwestern Australia for 1 year on a subdaily basis. The site included plots planted to narrow‐leafed lupin (Lupinus angustifolius; ‘lupin’) and plots left bare (no lupin). Fluxes were measured using soil chambers connected to a fully automated system that measured N2O by gas chromatography. Daily N2O fluxes were low (?0.5 to 24 g N2O‐N ha?1 day?1) and not different between treatments, culminating in an annual loss of 127 g N2O‐N ha?1. Greatest daily N2O fluxes occurred from both treatments in the postharvest period, and following a series of summer and autumn rainfall events. At this time of the year, soil conditions were conducive to soil microbial N2O production: elevated soil water contents, increased inorganic nitrogen (N) and dissolved organic carbon concentrations, and soil temperatures generally > 25 °C; furthermore, there was no active plant growth to compete for mineralized N. N2O emissions from the decomposition of legume crop residue were low, and approximately half that predicted using the currently recommended IPCC methodology. Furthermore, the contribution of the biological N2 fixation process to N2O emissions appeared negligible in the present study, supporting its omission as a source of N2O from the IPCC methodology for preparing national greenhouse gas inventories.  相似文献

1. Fig trees require host‐specific agaonid fig wasps for pollination, but their figs also support numerous non‐pollinating fig wasps (NPFW) that gall fig tissues or develop as parasitoids. 2. Ficus microcarpa L. is widely naturalised outside its native range and the most invasive fig tree species. Seed predators are widely used for the biological control of invasive plants, but no obligate seed predatory (as opposed to ovule or fig wall galling) NPFW have been recorded previously from any fig trees. 3. Philotrypesis NPFW are usually regarded as parasitoids or ‘inquilines’ (parasitoids that also eat plant material) of pollinator fig wasps, but the present study provides evidence that Philotrypesis taiwanensis, a NPFW associated with F. microcarpa, is an obligate seed predator: (i) adults emerge from seeds of typical appearance, with a surrounding elaiosome; (ii) it shows no preference for figs occupied by fig wasp species, other than the pollinator; (iii) it only develops in figs that contain pollinated ovules, avoiding figs occupied by an agaonid that fails to pollinate; (iv) larvae are distributed in layers where seeds are concentrated and (v) it has a negative impact on seed but not pollinator offspring numbers. 4. Philotrypesis is a large genus, and further species are likely to be seed predators.  相似文献

We propose a method to analyse competing risks survival datawhen failure types are missing for some individuals. Our approachis based on a standard proportional hazards structure for eachof the failure types, and involves the solution to estimatingequations. We present consistent and asymptotically normal estimatorsof the regression coefficients and related score tests. An appealingfeature is that individuals with known failure types make thesame contributions as they would to a standard proportionalhazards analysis. Contributions of individuals with unknownfailure types are weighted according to the probability thatthey failed from the cause of interest. Efficiency and robustnessare discussed. Results are illustrated with data from a breastcancer trial.  相似文献

1. We examined how ontogenetic development in a calanoid copepod from the High Arctic, Limnocalanus macrurus, influenced its elemental composition (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus), methylmercury (MeHg) content and stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios in populations from nine lakes. 2. Population structure explained 33–83% of among‐lake variation in the C, N and P composition of the biomass. Biomass dominated by early‐stage copepodites had a greater P content, which declined in more mature populations, as indicated by significant changes in % P and the molar N/P ratio. Carbon and lipid contents increased with the proportion of adult biomass. Copepod populations sampled in warmer waters had a greater proportion of adult biomass, and water temperature was the most significant environmental variable explaining elemental composition. 3. A δ15N enrichment of 3.3 ± 1.0‰ was associated with copepodite development. Gut contents of L. macrurus showed no evidence of animal (invertebrate) prey, indicating no change in trophic position. 4. Unexpectedly, MeHg concentration was negatively correlated with the proportion of adult biomass. However, this trend was not significant after correcting MeHg concentration to non‐lipid dry mass, suggesting a lipid dilution effect in more mature copepods. Lake surface area, rather than ontogeny, best explained MeHg concentrations in L. macrurus. 5. Ontogenetic influences on chemical constituents of this common Arctic copepod, particularly δ15N ratios and uncorrected MeHg concentrations, highlight the relevance of developmental processes for studies of food webs and mercury in species‐poor High Arctic lakes.  相似文献
