Root nodules of Lupinus albus (L.) cv. Multolupa were subjectedto short- and medium-term stresses by lowering rhizosphere temperaturefrom 25 to 16°C (2 h), detopping plants (3 h), darkeningplants (21 h) or exposing roots to 20 mol m–3 KNO3 for4 d. All experimental treatments produced increases in oxygendiffusion resistance, compared with control plants. These correlatedwith structural changes in the nodule cortex, which is describedin detail for the first time. The most noticeable change isthe occlusion of intercellular spaces by a glycoprotein whichwas identified using the monoclonal antibody MAC236. This glycoproteinwas also found surrounding bacteria in intercellular spacesof the cortex of control nodules. The bulbous geophyte Fritillaria montana is partially self‐compatible and capable of switching gender. Small flowering plants produce only single male flowers, but larger plants produce hermaphrodite or, rarely, male and hermaphrodite flowers. Eight populations in peninsular Italy were sampled to determine the frequency and size distributions of male and hermaphrodite plants, and to determine the relationship of plant size to male and hermaphrodite flower production. Male plants were significantly smaller than hermaphrodites and made up 14.5–47.8% (100% in one small population) of flowering plants within populations. There were no significant differences in male fitness among female‐sterile and hermaphrodite flowers, as they both possessed full and comparable fertilizing power. Therefore, the gender variation observed in F. montana is likely to depend on resource‐dependent sex allocation. From an evolutionary perspective, we highlight the occurrence of similar mechanisms of gender variation in other representatives of the order Liliales. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 168 , 323–333.  相似文献

This paper reports on an ultrastructural study of peroxisomesin infected nodule cells of Lupinus albus L cv Multolupa plantsgrown with and without nitrate (in short-term experiments) Cytochemicallocalization of catalase and peroxidase was performed applyingthe diamino-benzidine (DAB) technique in these tissues The infected cells presented a mean of seven peroxisomes, themaximum being 16 in some cells Peroxisome shapes proved to befairly round or egg-shaped, with maximum and minimum diametermeans of 0-35 and 0 18µm, respectively They were preferentiallypositioned on the cell periphery. ABSTRACT. Euglena gracilis is able to synthesize adenosine triphosphate under anaerobic conditions through a malonyl-independent fatty acid synthesis leading to wax ester fermentation. Mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis uses acetyl-CoA and propionyl-CoA as C2- and C3-donors for de novo synthesis of even- and odd-numbered fatty acids, respectively. Euglena' s wax ester fermentation has only been described in the E. gracilis strain 1224-5/25 Z. Here we investigate eight E. gracilis strains isolated in 1932–1958 from different localities in Europe and two bleached substrains of E. gracilis 1224-5/25, obtained by treatment with streptomycin and ofloxacin, and examine their anaerobic growth, wax ester fermentation, and wax ester composition. Under ambient oxygen levels, all strains accumulated wax esters in concentrations between 0.3% and 3.5% of the dry weight, but the strains revealed marked differences in wax ester accumulation with respect to anaerobic growth. Most fermenting strains tested showed increased wax ester synthesis under anaerobic conditions as well as the increased synthesis of odd-numbered fatty acids and alcohols suggesting an activation of the mitochondrial fatty acid biosynthesis pathway. Addition of the elongase inhibitor flufenacet to the growth medium specifically reduced the accumulation of odd-numbered fatty acids and alcohols and tended to increase the overall yield of anaerobic wax esters.  相似文献

We characterized eight polymorphic microsatellites in the icefish Chionodraco rastrospinosus (Perciformes, Notothenioidea, Channichthyidae). Microsatellites were isolated from a partial genomic library enriched for an AC motif. Chionodraco rastrospinosus is an endemic species inhabiting southern ocean waters surrounding the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Shetland Islands, and the South Orkney Islands. An excess of homozygotes was observed in seven out of the eight investigated loci; however, presence of null alleles was detected only for three of them suggesting that other factors may act in reducing heterozygosity. These molecular markers will be useful to investigate icefish genetic structure, possibly providing insights on its effective population size and demographic history.  相似文献

Gobiids of the genus Pomatoschistus are increasingly being investigated as models for adaptation to coastal environments and for mating system studies. Among the dozen currently analysed species, microsatellite primers have been characterized only for Pomatoschistus minutus. This paper describes seven new polymorphic loci isolated from Pomatoschistus marmoratus and Pomatoschistus microps, two species that hybridize. Cross‐species amplification was tested for these new loci, together with seven already published P. minutus loci. Systematic amplification of samples of each of the three species provided a first indication of their polymorphism.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that the Neogene crocodylian fauna of Europe has been represented only by brevirostrine alligatoroid Diplocynodon and longirostrine false gharials ( Gavialosuchus and/or Tomistoma ), which became extinct prior to 6 Mya. Although several lines of evidence suggest that Crocodylus originated in Africa during the Miocene and then promptly dispersed to other continents, the occurrence of this genus in Europe has never been rigorously proven and the traditional palaeontological approach failed to identify a monophyletic group of fossil Crocodylus (simply leading to a proliferation of extinct taxa). The new remains reported here, from an endemic insular fauna from southern Italy, Late Messinian to earliest Pliocene in age (5–6 million years old), represent the youngest European crocodylian, and allow, for the first time in a phylogenetic context, an unambiguous demonstration that Crocodylus dispersed into Europe, possibly during the Tortonian. If the peculiar morphology of the medial maxillary edge is interpreted as evidence for a medial dorsal boss, the southern Italian Crocodylus could be related to C. checchiai from the late Neogene of Libya. The architectural complexity of coral reefs is largely generated by reef‐building corals, yet the effects of current regional‐scale declines in coral cover on reef complexity are poorly understood. In particular, both the extent to which declines in coral cover lead to declines in complexity and the length of time it takes for reefs to collapse following coral mortality are unknown. Here we assess the extent of temporal and spatial covariation between coral cover and reef architectural complexity using a Caribbean‐wide dataset of temporally replicated estimates spanning four decades. Both coral cover and architectural complexity have declined rapidly over time, with little evidence of a time‐lag. However, annual rates of change in coral cover and complexity do not covary, and levels of complexity vary greatly among reefs with similar coral cover. These findings suggest that the stressors influencing Caribbean reefs are sufficiently severe and widespread to produce similar regional‐scale declines in coral cover and reef complexity, even though reef architectural complexity is not a direct function of coral cover at local scales. Given that architectural complexity is not a simple function of coral cover, it is important that conservation monitoring and restoration give due consideration to both architecture and coral cover. This will help ensure that the ecosystem services supported by architectural complexity, such as nutrient recycling, dissipation of wave energy, fish production and diversity, are maintained and enhanced.  相似文献
