1.  Female preferences for particular male ornaments may shift between populations as a consequence of ecological differences that change the reliability and detectability of the ornament, but few studies have examined how ornaments function in different populations.
2.  We examined the signalling function of male plumage ornaments in a warbler, the common yellowthroat ( Geothlypis trichas ), breeding in New York (NY) and Wisconsin (WI), USA. Males have two prominent ornaments: a black facial mask pigmented with melanin and a yellow bib pigmented by carotenoids. Previous studies in WI indicate that the size of the mask, and not the bib, is primarily related to female choice and male reproductive success. In NY, however, the pattern is reversed and attributes of the bib (size and colour), and not the mask, are the target of sexual selection.
3.  We found that brightness of the yellow bib was the best signal of humoral immunity (immunoglobulin G) in NY and mask size was the best signal in WI, after controlling for breeding experience and capture date. Thus, similar aspects of male quality appeared to be signalled by different ornaments in different populations.
4.  There was no difference between populations in the level of plasma carotenoids or the prevalence of malarial parasites, which may affect the costs and benefits of choosing males with particular ornaments in each location.
5.  Even though females in different populations prefer different ornaments produced by different types of pigments, these ornaments appear to be signalling similar aspects of male quality. Our results caution against inferring the function of particular ornaments based simply on their type of pigment.  相似文献

Annual spring relapse of blood parasite infections in birds is believed to be the result of hormonal changes associated with breeding. As part of a larger study on the epizootiology of Haemoproteus danilewskyi in blue jays in south-central Florida, we studied the relationship between H. danilewskyi infections and levels of luteinizing hormone, prolactin, progesterone, testosterone, estradiol, and corticosterone. We found a positive association between intensity of H. danilewskyi infection and corticosterone levels in females but not in males. We also found no association between infection and levels of prolactin, luteinizing hormone, progesterone, testosterone, or estradiol in males or females. In addition, we found a positive relationship between levels of corticosterone and handling time and between corticosterone and testosterone levels. We suggest a possible influence of corticosterone on spring relapse of Haemoproteus spp. infections in birds but provide no support for the influence of breeding hormones on relapse of these parasites.  相似文献

Background

The wild grass Brachypodium distachyon has emerged as a model system for temperate grasses and biofuel plants. However, the global analysis of miRNAs, molecules known to be key for eukaryotic gene regulation, has been limited in B. distachyon to studies examining a few samples or that rely on computational predictions. Similarly an in-depth global analysis of miRNA-mediated target cleavage using parallel analysis of RNA ends (PARE) data is lacking in B. distachyon.

Results

B. distachyon small RNAs were cloned and deeply sequenced from 17 libraries that represent different tissues and stresses. Using a computational pipeline, we identified 116 miRNAs including not only conserved miRNAs that have not been reported in B. distachyon, but also non-conserved miRNAs that were not found in other plants. To investigate miRNA-mediated cleavage function, four PARE libraries were constructed from key tissues and sequenced to a total depth of approximately 70 million sequences. The roughly 5 million distinct genome-matched sequences that resulted represent an extensive dataset for analyzing small RNA-guided cleavage events. Analysis of the PARE and miRNA data provided experimental evidence for miRNA-mediated cleavage of 264 sites in predicted miRNA targets. In addition, PARE analysis revealed that differentially expressed miRNAs in the same family guide specific target RNA cleavage in a correspondingly tissue-preferential manner.

Conclusions

B. distachyon miRNAs and target RNAs were experimentally identified and analyzed. Knowledge gained from this study should provide insights into the roles of miRNAs and the regulation of their targets in B. distachyon and related plants.  相似文献

Cultured human skin fibroblasts contain an extensive GERL network. The GERL consists of acid phosphatase-positive polygonal tubules and tuberous thickenings which are adjacent to the Golgi cisternae. It often surrounds lucent vacuoles and rarely lipid bodies. Cultures examined at various intervals after subculturing, passages in culture and at different ages of the source of the primary fibroblasts demonstrate no significant morphologic variation in GERL. However, the network appears to fragment in mitotic fibroblasts. Cultured fibroblasts from patients with lysosomal storage diseases exhibit a normal GERL. Exposure of fibroblasts to non-toxic levels of chloroquine and ammonium chloride result in increasing dilatation of the GERL and the resultant formation of large cytoplasmic vacuoles. These observations support the previously proposed theory that this network is a special form of lysosome packaged to contain a large membrane pool.  相似文献

LINE-1 is a family of repetitive DNA sequences interspersed among mammalian genes. In the mouse haploid genome there are about 100,000 LINE-1 copies. We asked if the subspecies Mus spretus and Mus domesticus have developed species-specific LINE-1 subfamilies. Sequences from 14 M. spretus LINE-1 elements were obtained and compared to M. domesticus LINE-1 sequences. Using a molecular phylogenetic tree we identified several differences shared among a subset of young repeats in one or the other species as candidates for species-specific LINE-1 variants. Species specificity was tested using oligonucleotide probes complementary to each putative species-specific variant. When hybridized to genomic DNAs, single-variant probes detected an expanded number of elements in the expected mouse. In the other species these probes detected a smaller number of matches consistent with the average rate of random divergence among LINE-1 elements. It was further found that the combination of two species-specific sequence differences in the same probe reduced the detection background in the wrong species below our detection limit.  相似文献

Summary Phenamil, an analog of amiloride, has previously been shown to bind specifically to sodium channels in toad bladder (J.L. Garvin et al.,J. Membrane Biol. 87:45–54, 1985). In this paper,3H-phenamil was used to measure sodium channel density in both isolated epithelial cells and intact bladders. From the specific binding to intact bladders, a channel density of 455±102 channels/m2 was calculated. No correlation between specific binding and the magnitude of irreversible inhibition of shortcircuit current was found. Pretreatment of intact bladders with 1 mg/ml trypsin reduced specific binding to isolated cells by 82±5%. In isolated cells, neither aldosterone nor vasopressin had any significant effect on specific phenamil binding. It is inferred that phenamil binds to both open and closed channels which may be either in the mucosal membrane or in the submembrane space. Finally, and rather surprisingly, we found that3H-phenamil binds irreversibly to the basolateral membrane at concentrations as low as 4×10–7 m. Therefore, care must be used in interpreting binding studies with amiloride or its analog at such concentrations.  相似文献

From June through August in 1999 and 2000, we conducted an avian serosurvey for eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE) virus at Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area (KMWA), a focus of infection in central Ohio. We also monitored abundance of the suspected enzootic vector, Culiseta melanura Coquillett, in Brown's Lake Bog, an adjacent wetland. Of the 363 birds of 30 species sampled in 1999, three gray catbirds (Dumetella carolinensis) were positive for antibodies to EEE virus, representing 1.2% of the avian samples and 4.2% of the gray catbirds sampled. Given these results and the abundance of gray catbirds at this site, this species became the focus of our sampling efforts in 2000. However, none of the 109 samples collected from 98 catbirds in 2000 was positive for the virus. Culiseta melanura adults were monitored using resting boxes and CDC CO, light traps at both sites in 1999. Culiseta melanura larvae were monitored in 1999 and 2000 at Brown's Lake Bog, the closest known source of this species, approximately 5km from the avian serosurvey site. We suggest that dry conditions reduced the breeding and abundance of Cs. melanura in 2000 and possibly the transmission of EEE virus at KMWA.  相似文献
