Increased Tolerance to Mn Deficiency in Transgenic Tobacco Overproducing Superoxide Dismutase 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The effect of Mn deficiency on plant growth and activities ofsuperoxide dismutase (SOD) was studied in hydroponically-grownseedlings of transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) engineeredto overexpress FeSOD in chloroplasts or MnSOD in chloroplastsor mitochondria. In comparison to the non-transgenic parentalline, the activity of MnSOD in the lines overproducing MnSODwas 1.6-fold greater, and the activity of FeSOD in the FeSOD-overproducinglines was 3.2-fold greater, regardless of the Mn treatment (deficientor sufficient). The MnSOD activities decreased due to Mn deficiency,while activities of FeSOD and Cu/ZnSOD remained unaffected 25d after transplanting (DAT). With an increased duration of theMn deficiency stress (45 DAT), FeSOD activity decreased, andthat of MnSOD continued to decrease, while Cu/ZnSOD activitysimultaneously increased. Under Mn sufficiency, non-transgenicparental plants had greater shoot biomass than the transgenics;however, when subjected to Mn deficiency stress, non-transgenicparents suffered a proportionally greater growth reduction thantransgenic lines. A molecular phylogenetic analysis was conducted in order to reconstruct the evolution of female flightlessness in the geometrid tribe Operophterini (Lepidoptera, Geometridae, Larentiinae). DNA variation in four nuclear gene regions, segments D1 and D2 of 28S rRNA, elongation factor 1α , and wingless , was examined from 22 species representing seven tribes of Larentiinae and six outgroup species. Direct optimization was used to infer a phylogenetic hypothesis from the combined sequence data set. The results obtained confirmed that Operophterini (including Malacodea ) is a monophyletic group, and Perizomini is its sister group. Within Operophterini, the genus Malacodea is the sister group to the genera Operophtera and Epirrita , which form a monophyletic group. This relationship is also supported by morphological data. The results suggest that female flightlessness has evolved independently twice: first in the lineage of Malacodea and, for the second time, in the lineage of Operophtera after its separation from the lineage of Epirrita . An alternative reconstruction (i.e. recovery of flight ability in an ancestor of Epirrita ) appears unlikely for various reasons. The similarities shared by Epirrita with a basal representative of Perizomini, Perizoma didymatum , allow the proposal of a sequence of evolutionary events that has led to flightlessness. It is likely that the transition to female flightlessness in the two lineages of Operophterini occurred after the colonization of stable forest habitats, followed by the evolution of a specific set of permissive traits, including larval polyphagy, limited importance of adult feeding, and adult flight during the cold months of the season. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 92 , 241–252. 相似文献

Identification of habitat features that are strongly associated with the occurrence of threatened species is important in terms of predicting impacts of habitat change and identifying key habitats for conservation. In this paper, we apply habitat‐based statistical models to predict occupancy patterns of the endangered southern bell frog (Litoria raniformis) across inland New South Wales (Australia). Litoria raniformis previously occupied a wide range of natural and man‐made waterbodies across a large geographic range, including flood plain wetlands, oxbow lagoons, irrigation canals and rice bays. Alteration of natural flooding regimes has affected a large proportion of habitats within the historical range of Litoria raniformis, but it is not clear how these changes have influenced habitat occupancy patterns. Fifty‐two waterbodies were surveyed for presence/absence of Litoria raniformis in 2001 and 2004. Stepwise logistic regression models were generated to select a subset of variables that best predicted occupancy. Using three predictor variables, vacant and occupied habitats could be predicted with an accuracy of 90% and 70%, respectively. The predictor variables were: the interaction between wetland hydrology and complexity of aquatic vegetation, complexity of fringing vegetation and water temperature. While this study demonstrated that a range of waterbody types were occupied by Litoria raniformis, these habitats shared common hydrological conditions and vegetation characteristics. Altered flooding regimes and reductions in the complexity of aquatic and fringing vegetation are likely to increase the probability of localized extinctions of Litoria raniformis populations. 相似文献

Growth factors mediate tissue interactions and regulate a variety of cellular functions that are critical for normal lung development and homeostasis. Besides their involvement in lung pattern formation, growth and cell differentiation during organogenesis, these factors have been also implicated in modulating injury-repair responses of the adult lung. Altered expression of growth factors, such as transforming growth factor β1, vascular endothelial growth factor and epidermal growth factor, and/or their receptors, has been found in a number of pathological lung conditions. In this paper, we discuss the dual role of these molecules in mediating beneficial feedback responses or responses that can further damage lung integrity; we shall also discuss the basis for their prospective use as therapeutic agents. 相似文献
