Summary Activity directed isolation studies of the ethanol extract of Bontia daphnoides L (Myoporaceae) leaves and stems led to the isolation of epingaione, a sesquiterpene furan. This compound was previously described by Chinnock et al. (1987) from the same plant. The compound showed growth regulatory activities on gravid adult female Boophilus microplus Canestrini (the southern cattle tick). The dose required for inhibiting the hatching of B. microplus eggs by 50% (Fid50)was 0.4±0.06 mg/g of the tick body weight. The Fid50 dose inhibited the sequestration of protein into eggs oviposited by 80%. These eggs were non-agglutinated and wrinkled. Histological examination of ovarian sections from the treated ticks revealed significant degeneration of funicle cells and reduction in yolk content. 相似文献

Acanthamoeba polyphaga, a free-living, bacterial feeder found in freshwater and soil, reproduces asexually and is morphologicaly distinguishable from other acanthamoebae. Isoenzyme analyses were done on 15 random, clonal isolates from soil. Electrophoretic patterns indicated that enzyme bands occurred in clusters consistent with that of a diploid organism. The data indicates that natural populations of A. polyphaga have a greater genetic diversity than laboratory isolates of other amoebae, resembling the heterogeneity observed for natural populations of bacteria. 相似文献

We present a mathematical model and numerical method designedto study the fluid dynamics of swimming organisms. The fullNavier Stokes equations are solved in a domain of fluidwithin which an organism undergoing timedependent motionsis immersed. ABSTRACT. A method is described for obtaining large numbers of telotrochs from mass cultures of Vorticella convallaria . These free-swimming cells contract slightly along the aboral-oral plane when extracted with Triton X-100, and thus appear more similar in shape to zooids than unextracted telotrochs. Cytoskeletal structures associated with feeding, such as the infudibulum and the cytopharynx, are visible in cytoskeletal preparations of these non-feeding telotrochs and thus appear not to be disassembled during telotroch formation. The telotroch to stalked-zooid transition proceeds rapidly through a set series of morphogenetic stages. After telotroch attachment, the aboral cilia cease beating and are resorbed. Within 7 min the cell is inverted bell-shaped and the zooid begins feeding. Stalk elongation begins about 15–20 min after attachment, lengthening at the rate of 0.5 μ/min for the first hour and more slowly (0.1 μm/min) after that. Interestingly, these developmental stages are essentially the same as those described for the telotroch to zooid transition in the colonial peritrich Zoothamnium . This evolutionary conservation suggests that the precise sequence and timing of these events are critical for their successful completion. Furthermore, the facts that the telotroch to zooid transition occurs very rapidly, that the feeding structures are maintained throughout the transformation, and that basic cytoskeletal architecture is relatively unchanged is consistent with the hypothesis that the transformation occurs through controlled cytoskeletal rearrangements rather than by changes in gene expression. 相似文献

Smyth line (SL) chickens, which develop a depigmenting disorder similar to human vitiligo, produce circulating anti-melanocyte antibodies (Austin, L.M. et al., (1992) The detection of melanocyte autoantibodies in the Smyth chicken model for vitiligo. Clin. Immunol. Immunopathol., 64:112–120). In order to characterize these autoantibodies, we studied the reactivity of cultured chicken, mouse, and human melanocytes, as well as frozen sections of chicken feather follicles and embryonic eyes, against SL serum, employing indirect immunofluorescence. Light Brown Leghorn (LBL) serum was used as a negative control. Chicken (SL and LBL), mouse, and human melanocytes exhibited greater fluorescence with SL serum than with LBL serum (up to a 1:60,000 dilution). The fluorescent pattern was predominant along the perimeter of the cells, suggesting plasma membrane staining. Fluorescence-activated flow cytometry analysis and immunocytochemical localization at the ultrastructural level using intact chicken cells supported this hypothesis. Melanocytes were readily stained in cryosections of regenerating feather follicles and embryonic eyes incubated with SL, but not LBL, serum. In addition, amelanotic melanocytes in albino chicken feathers reacted with SL serum. SL serum also preferentially stained cells emigrating from cultured avian neural tubes and within the dermis of the proliferative germ of regenerating feather follicles suggesting that melanoblasts express the antigens. We conclude that Smyth line serum contains melanocyte autoantibodies that cross-react with mouse and human melanocytes, are able to bind to pigment cells within tissues, and recognize antigens expressed in the cytoplasm and on the surface of melanocytes and melanoblasts. 相似文献

There is increasing interest among evolutionary biologists in developmental plasticity. Previously ignored by many as being irrelevant to evolution because a plastic response to an environmental change is not inherited, the current, more positive, view of plasticity focuses on the fact that, although any individual plastic response is nonheritable, the overall pattern of developmental response to environmental variation (i.e. the developmental reaction norm) is heritable and may vary among genotypes within a population. Characters subject to plastic variation, like those that are entirely genetically determined, may vary in continuous, meristic or discrete ways. Of these, the least work has been carried out on meristic variation. In the present study, we contribute to the rectification of this imbalance by examining the plastic response of the number of tentacles in the lophophore of a species of bryozoan, Membranipora membranacea, to three environmental variables: temperature, salinity and food concentration. Because the approach taken was an experimental one, unlike the majority of studies of bryozoan tentacles to date, we are able to make statements about the causality of variation in tentacle number. The main conclusions of the present study are: (1) that plastic responses occur to all three environmental variables; (2) that these are part of a more generalized plastic response in the overall development of the zooids rather than being lophophore‐specific; and (3) that the issue of whether the relevant developmental reaction norms are adaptive or not is an open (and interesting) question. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 541–551. 相似文献

Records of effects of ambient ozone pollution on vegetation have been compiled for Europe for the years 1990–2006. Sources include scientific papers, conference proceedings, reports to research funders, records of confirmed ozone injury symptoms and an international biomonitoring experiment coordinated by the ICP Vegetation. The latter involved ozone‐sensitive (NC‐S) and ozone‐resistant (NC‐R) biotypes of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) grown according to a common protocol and monitored for ozone injury and biomass differences in 17 European countries, from 1996 to 2006. Effects were separated into visible injury or growth/yield reduction. Of the 644 records of visible injury, 39% were for crops (27 species), 38.1% were for (semi‐) natural vegetation (95 species) and 22.9% were for shrubs (49 species). Owing to inconsistencies in reporting effort from year to year it was not possible to determine geographical or temporal trends in the data. Nevertheless, this study has shown effects in ambient air in 18 European countries from Sweden in the north to Greece in the south. These effects data were superimposed on AOT40 (accumulated ozone concentrations over 40 ppb) and POD3gen (modelled accumulated stomatal flux over a threshold of 3 nmol m?2 s?1) maps generated by the EMEP Eulerian model (50 km × 50 km grid) that were parameterized for a generic crop based on wheat and NC‐S/NC‐R white clover. Many effects were found in areas where the AOT40 (crops) was below the critical level of 3 ppm h. In contrast, the majority of effects were detected in grid squares where POD3gen (crops) were in the mid‐high range (>12 mmol m?2). Overall, maps based on POD3gen provided better fit to the effects data than those based on AOT40, with the POD3gen model for clover fitting the clover effects data better than that for a generic crop. 相似文献
