Tropospheric ozone can affect crop yield and has been reported to cause reductions in growth and biomass of forest tree species in laboratory and glasshouse studies. However, linkages between growth and ambient ozone concentrations in the field are not well established for forest trees. Ambient ozone concentrations have been shown to cause foliar injury on a number of tree species throughout much of the eastern USA. Symptom expression is influenced by endogenous and exogenous factors and, therefore, ozone-exposure/tree-response relationships have been difficult to confirm. Clearly defined, cause-effect relationships between visible injury and growth losses due to ozone have not been validated. Generalizations of sensitivity of forest trees to ozone are complicated by tree development stage, microclimate, leaf phenology, compensatory processes, within-species variation and other interacting stresses. In general, decreases in above-ground growth at ambient ozone levels in the eastern USA appear to be in the range of 0–10% per year. However, these conclusions are based on a small number of tree species, with the vast majority of studies involving individual tree seedlings in a non-competitive environment. Comparative studies of small and large trees indicate that seedlings are not suitable surrogates for predicting responses of mature trees to ozone. Process-level modelling is a promising methodology that has been recently utilized to assess ozone effects on a stand to regional scale, indicating that ozone is affecting forest growth in the eastern USA. The extent and magnitude of the response is variable and depends on many edaphic and climatic factors. It is imperative when conducting assessment exercises, however, that forest biologists constantly keep in mind the tremendous variability that exists within natural systems. Scaling of single site/physiological response phenomena from an individual tree to an ecosystem and/or region necessitates further research.  相似文献

The oxygen stable isotope composition (δ18O) of CO2 is a valuable tool for studying the gas exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. In the soil, it records the isotopic signal of water pools subjected to precipitation and evaporation events. The δ18O of the surface soil net CO2 flux is dominated by the physical processes of diffusion of CO2 into and out of the soil and the chemical reactions during CO2–H2O equilibration. Catalytic reactions by the enzyme carbonic anhydrase, reducing CO2 hydration times, have been proposed recently to explain field observations of the δ18O signatures of net soil CO2 fluxes. How important these catalytic reactions are for accurately predicting large‐scale biosphere fluxes and partitioning net ecosystem fluxes is currently uncertain because of the lack of field data. In this study, we determined the δ18O signatures of net soil CO2 fluxes from soil chamber measurements in a Mediterranean forest. Over the 3 days of measurements, the observed δ18O signatures of net soil CO2 fluxes became progressively enriched with a well‐characterized diurnal cycle. Model simulations indicated that the δ18O signatures recorded the interplay of two effects: (1) progressive enrichment of water in the upper soil by evaporation, and (2) catalytic acceleration of the isotopic exchange between CO2 and soil water, amplifying the contributions of ‘atmospheric invasion’ to net signatures. We conclude that there is a need for better understanding of the role of enzymatic reactions, and hence soil biology, in determining the contributions of soil fluxes to oxygen isotope signals in atmospheric CO2.  相似文献

To test the involvement of ethylene in mediating ozone-induced cell death and leaf loss in European beech ( Fagus sylvatica L.), tree seedlings were exposed to proportionally increased or decreased field ozone levels for up to 6 months. Ozone treatment caused cell death and accelerated leaf loss at higher than ambient levels, but had only minor effects at ambient and no effects at subambient ozone levels. The emission of ethylene, the levels of its precursor, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC), and mRNA levels of specific ACC synthase ( FS-ACS2 ) and ACC oxidase ( FS-ACO1 ) isoforms showed a persistent increase and preceded cell death by approximately 2 weeks. Inhibition of ethylene biosynthesis led to reduced lesion formation whereas application of ACC accelerated ozone-induced cell death and leaf loss. Similar results were obtained when adult beech trees were exposed to 2 × ozone by a whole tree free-air canopy exposure system. The results suggest a role of ethylene in amplifying ozone effects under field conditions in this major European broad-leaved tree species.  相似文献

Icelandic freshwater systems are geologically young and contain only six species of freshwater fish. As these species colonized Icelandic fresh waters they were presented with a diversity of unique, uncontested habitats and food resources, promoting the evolution of new behaviour strategies crucial to the formation of new morphs and speciation. To determine the likelihood that predation threat could affect the antipredator behaviour and possibly the sympatric divergence of prey populations, we analysed antipredator behaviour of seven groups of Icelandic threespine sticklebacks ( Gasterosteus aculeatus ): two marine groups, one group from a lake without piscine predators, and two polymorphic lake populations, each with two groups occupying unique habitats. Shoaling cohesion, school formation and duration, and vigilance in predator inspection/avoidance behaviour varied greatly among groups. The differences appeared to be related to the risk of predation as well as to opportunities and constraints set by the different habitats. Antipredator behaviour was especially pronounced and differed extensively in two polymorphic forms from the lake Thingvallavatn, where predation risk is very high. By keeping the two morphs separate in their respective habitats, high predation risk may be a contributing factor in promoting the habitat-specific divergence of G. aculeatus seen in the lake. This suggests that in situations where refuge habitats are spatially separated, the risk of predation may contribute to the evolution of separate sympatric forms of small fish such as G. aculeatus .  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 82 , 189–203.  相似文献

The simultaneous measurement of the induction curves of chlorophyllfluorescence, its responses to saturating flashes, light-scatteringat 532 nm, and plasmalemma voltage supports previous findings(Hansen, Kolbowski, and Dau, 1987), that light-induced uptakeof protons into the inner thylakoid space causes the rapid (5to 20 s) light-induced depolarization at the plasmalemma viasubstrate depletion of the electrogenic H+-pump. These conclusionsare based on kinetic studies which enable the separation ofindividual components in complex signals by means of their assignmentto different time-constants. In contrast to the previous investigation,binary noise was used for modulation of the actinic light. Thenew input signal not only increased the reliability of the previousresults obtained by sine-waves, but also led to the detectionof three additional time-constants. One of these is probablyrelated to the action of light on the potassium channel of theplasmalemma. The others are assigned to the quencher Q and toa still unknown process. Abstract: We evaluated a chamber and nose cone method of isoflurane delivery for anesthetizing eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis; summer n = 43, winter n = 48) and Allegheny woodrats (Neotoma magister; summer n = 24, winter n = 13) for use when pain or stress was possible from sampling procedures. Mean induction time for squirrels (from beginning of isoflurane administration to safe removal from trap), was 4.63 ± 0.58 minutes. Squirrels awoke more quickly in summer (1.40 ± 0.15 min) than in winter (3.62 ± 0.24 min) after removal of the nose cone. We manually restrained woodrats and administered the nose cone for 0.5 minutes to each animal. Woodrats awoke after 4.76 ± 0.58 minutes following the final dose of isoflurane for both seasons. These methods are useful for working with small mammals in the field and provide an appropriate anesthetic when there may be more than slight pain or distress.  相似文献

Species delimitation requires an assessment of varied traits that can contribute to reproductive isolation, as well as of the permanence of evolutionary differentiation among closely related lineages. Integrative taxonomy, including the combination of genome‐wide molecular data with ecological data, offers an effective approach to this issue. We use genotyping‐by‐sequencing together with a review of ecological divergence to assess the traditionally recognized species status of three closely related members of the spruce budworm species complex, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clemens), C. occidentalis Freeman (=C. freemani Razowski) and C. biennis Freeman, each of which is a major defoliator of conifer forests. We sampled a broad region of overlap between these three taxa in Alberta and British Columbia (Canada) where potential for gene flow provides a strong test of the durability of divergence among lineages. A total of 2218 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were assayed, and patterns of differentiation were evaluated under the biological, ecological, genotypic cluster and phylogenetic species concepts. Choristoneura fumiferana was genetically distinct with substantial barriers to genetic exchange with C. occidentalis and C. biennis. Conversely, divergence between C. occidentalis and C. biennis was limited to a small subset of outlier loci and was within the range observed within any one of the taxa. Considering both population genetic and ecological patterns of divergence, C. fumiferana should continue to be recognized as a distinct species, and C. biennis ( syn.n. ) should be treated as a subspecies (C. occidentalis biennis Freeman, 1967) of C. occidentalis, thereby automatically establishing the nominate name C. occidentalis occidentalis Freeman, 1967 for univoltine populations of this species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT  There is often an implicit assumption that womens' technologies and associated tasks in subsistence-based groups are expedient and simple. For instance, in Native Alaska, the butchering of fish has been illustrated as arduous but uncomplicated work. On the contrary, closer examinations, as well as discussions with the people who are still learning and practicing subsistence tasks, indicate that this perspective is inaccurate. Instead, these taken-for-granted technologies and techniques require a lifetime of training and practice, and not all people achieve master status. Drawing from data from contemporary herring processing and the related tools of the trade, I explore the division of labor in the context of expertise and apprenticeship. Abstract: We developed new, and validated existing, indices of nutritional condition for live and dead mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). Live animal indices included a body condition score (BCS), thickness of subcutaneous fat and selected muscles using ultrasonography, and body mass. Dead animal indices included femur, metatarsal, and mandible marrow fat, 3 kidney fat indices, and 2 carcass scoring methods. We used 21 female deer and 4 castrates (1-11 yr old) varying widely in nutritional condition (2-28% ingesta-free body fat). Deer were euthanized and homogenized for chemical analysis of fat, protein, water, and ash content. Estimates of fat and gross energy (GE) were regressed against each condition indicator using regression. Subcutaneous fat thickness, a rump BCS, and rLIVINDEX (an arithmetic combination of subcutaneous fat thickness and the rump BCS) were most related to condition for live animals (r2 ≥ 0.87, P < 0.001) whereas the Kistner score and kidney fat were most related to fat and GE for dead animals (r2 ≥ 0.77, P < 0.001). We also evaluated range of usefulness and sensitivity to small changes in body condition for all models. In general, indices with moderate or highly curvilinear statistical relations to body fat or those based on only one fat depot or a small number of ranking scores will have limitations in their use. Our results identify robust tools for a variety of research and monitoring designs useful for evaluating nutrition's effect on mule deer populations.  相似文献
