Aspergillus sydowi (Bain. & Start.) Thom & Church grew and sporulated best at 30°C. The best pH for growth and sporulation was 5.5. Light was stimulatory to sporulation but inhibitory to growth. Among the carbon sources employed, sucrose supported the best growth and sporulation. Nitrate, ammonium and asparagine were good nitrogen sources for growth and sporulation. In Britain the flight of alate parthenogenetic viviparae of Elatobium abietinum was found to occur only in early summer. Data for this study were extracted from suction trap catches and weather records obtained from meteorological stations adjacent to the traps. The duration of the flight period increased with latitude. At 51° N 95 % of the trap catch was taken in 24 days and at 55° N in 32 days. A flight threshold temperature of 12–13°C was deduced from trap catches taken within the forest crop. Displacements in median flight days at various sites in Britain could be related to values of accumulated day-degrees but not to differences in photoperiod. The median flight day can be predicted empirically by accumulating day-degree values over 8°C from 1 January up to a total of 115 day-degrees. The implications of seasonal flight activity on crop reinvasion is discussed. 相似文献

Colonizing species may often encounter strong selection during the initial stages of adaptation to novel environments. Such selection is particularly likely to act on traits expressed early in development since early survival is necessary for the expression of adaptive phenotypes later in life. Genetic studies of fitness under field conditions, however, seldom include the earliest developmental stages. Using a new set of recombinant inbred lines, we present a study of the genetic basis of fitness variation in Arabidopsis thaliana in which genotypes, environments, and geographic location were manipulated to study total lifetime fitness, beginning with the seed stage. Large‐effect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for fitness changed allele frequency and closely approached 90% in some treatments within a single generation. These QTLs colocated with QTLs for germination phenology when seeds were dispersed following a schedule of a typical winter annual, and they were detected in two geographic locations at different latitudes. Epistatically interacting loci affected both fitness and germination in many cases. QTLs for field germination phenology colocated with known QTLs for primary dormancy induction as assessed in laboratory tests, including the candidate genes DOG1 and DOG6. Therefore fitness, germination phenology, and primary dormancy are genetically associated at the level of specific chromosomal regions and candidate loci. Genes associated with the ability to arrest development at early life stages and assess environmental conditions are thereby likely targets of intense natural selection early in the colonization process. 相似文献

Over the last several years, as cesarean deliveries have grown increasingly common, there has been a great deal of public and professional interest in the phenomenon of women 'choosing' to deliver by cesarean section in the absence of any specific medical indication. The issue has sparked intense conversation, as it raises questions about the nature of autonomy in birth. Whereas mainstream bioethical discourse is used to associating autonomy with having a large array of choices, this conception of autonomy does not seem adequate to capture concerns and intuitions that have a strong grip outside this discourse. An empirical and conceptual exploration of how delivery decisions ought to be negotiated must be guided by a rich understanding of women's agency and its placement within a complicated set of cultural meanings and pressures surrounding birth. It is too early to be 'for' or 'against' women's access to cesarean delivery in the absence of traditional medical indications – and indeed, a simple pro- or con- position is never going to do justice to the subtlety of the issue. The right question is not whether women ought to be allowed to choose their delivery approach but, rather, taking the value of women's autonomy in decision-making around birth as a given, what sorts of guidelines, practices, and social conditions will best promote and protect women's full inclusion in a safe and positive birth process. 相似文献

Global amphibian declines are linked with the presence of specific, highly virulent genotypes of the emerging fungal disease chytridiomycosis caused by Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) known as the global panzootic lineage (Bd‐GPL). The global trade in amphibians for human consumption is suspected to have facilitated emergence of the disease, but evidence to support this is largely lacking. Here, we investigated the role the Lithobates catesbeianus (North American bullfrog) trade in spreading Bd genotypes by comparing strains associated with L. catesbeianus to a global panel using 36 sequenced loci from multiple chromosomal regions. Most bullfrogs were infected with Bd‐GPL genotypes, but we also detected novel, highly divergent Bd genotypes (Bd‐Brazil) from a live bullfrog in a US market and from native Brazilian anurans in the Atlantic Forest where bullfrogs are widely farmed. Sexual reproduction was also detected for the first time in Bd in the form of a hybrid genotype between the Bd‐GPL and Bd‐Brazil lineages in the Atlantic Forest. Despite the demonstration that ribosomal RNA types in Bd fail to undergo concerted evolution (over 20 sequence types may be found in a single strain), the Bd‐GPL and Bd‐Brazil lineages form largely separate clusters of related internal transcribed spacer (ITS) RNA sequences. Using ITS sequences, we then demonstrate the presence of Bd‐Brazil in Japan, primarily on invasive L. catesbeianus. The finding that Bd is capable of sexual reproduction between panzootic and endemic genotypes emphasizes the risk of international wildlife trade as a source of additional Bd epizootics owing to hybridization. 相似文献
