Although there is substantial evidence that Northern Hemisphere species have responded to climatic change over the last few decades, there is little documented evidence that Southern Hemisphere species have responded in the same way. Here, we report that Australian migratory birds have undergone changes in the first arrival date (FAD) and last date of departure (LDD) of a similar magnitude as species from the Northern Hemisphere. We compiled data on arrival and departure of migratory birds in south‐east Australia since 1960 from the published literature, Bird Observer Reports, and personal observations from bird watchers. Data on the FAD for 24 species and the LDD for 12 species were analyzed. Sixteen species were short‐ to middle‐distance species arriving at their breeding grounds, seven were long‐distance migrants arriving at their nonbreeding grounds, and one was a middle‐distance migrant also arriving at its nonbreeding ground. For 12 species, we gathered data from more than one location, enabling us to assess the consistency of intraspecific trends at different locations. Regressions of climate variables against year show that across south‐east Australia average annual maximum and minimum temperatures have increased by 0.17°C and 0.13°C decade?1 since 1960, respectively. Over this period there has been an average advance in arrival of 3.5 days decade?1; 16 of the 45 time‐series (representing 12 of the 24 species studied) showed a significant trend toward earlier arrival, while only one time‐series showed a significant delay. Conversely, there has been an average delay in departure of 5.1 days decade?1; four of the 21 departure time‐series (four species) showed a significant trend toward later departure, while one species showed a significant trend toward earlier departure. However, differences emerge between the arrival and departure of short‐ to middle‐distance species visiting south‐east Australia to breed compared with long‐distance species that spend their nonbreeding period here. On average, short‐ to middle‐distance migrants have arrived at their breeding grounds 3.1 days decade?1 earlier and delayed departure by 8.1 days decade?1, thus extending the time spent in their breeding grounds by ~11 days decade?1. The average advance in arrival at the nonbreeding grounds of long‐distance migrants is 6.8 days decade?1. These species, however, have also advanced departure by an average of 6.9 days decade?1. Hence, the length of stay has not changed but rather, the timing of events has advanced. The patterns of change in FAD and LDD of Australian migratory birds are of a similar magnitude to changes undergone by Northern Hemisphere species, and add further evidence that the modest warming experienced over the past few decades has already had significant biological impacts on a global scale.  相似文献

Movement among social groups interacts with the costs and benefits of group‐living in complex ways. Unlike most other social spiders, the social huntsman spider, Delena cancerides, appears to enter foreign colonies, discriminates kin from non‐kin, and has very limited dispersal options because their bark retreats are rare, making this species an interesting model organism with which to examine the role of inter‐colony movement on group‐living. We examined movement among field colonies of D. cancerides in three ways: (1) by tracking the dispersal and immigration of marked spiders into foreign colonies; (2) by recording resident spiders' behaviour toward introduced immigrants; and (3) by inferring intra‐colony relatedness and immigration patterns through allozyme electrophoresis. Of the marked spiders, only young juveniles moved into neighbouring colonies, whereas subadults and adults did not. Introduced juveniles were tolerated in foreign colonies, whereas introduced adult males and subadults were usually attacked by the resident adult female, unless she had similar sized subadult/adult offspring of her own. Allozyme profiles from unmanipulated field colonies showed that 47% of sampled colonies contained at least one immigrant and that average within colony relatedness was below 0.5. These data align with previous research on the costs and benefits of group‐living for D. cancerides, suggesting that spiders actively seek and regulate group membership based on interests of both the immigrant and the colony. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.  相似文献

The lectin, Concanavalin A (Con A), inhibits cell pairing during mating in Tetrahymena and binds to the surface of pairing cells via receptors concentrated around the conjugation junction. Concanavalin A is also ingested in large amounts into food vacuoles. To dispel the possibility that Con A inhibits pairing via uptake into food vacuoles or through induction of food vacuole formation and to strengthen the idea that pairing is blocked through binding of Con A to cell surface receptors, we have conducted three types of experiments: 1) attempts to inhibit pairing by feeding with nutrients and with tantalum, a non-nutritive reagent; 2) a temporal analysis of the presence of food vacuoles in mating cells fed with tantalum; and 3) analysis of the restoration of pairing following the addition of α-methyl mannoside to cells previously treated with inhibitory concentrations of Con A. The results of these studies support the idea that Con A inhibits pairing by binding to receptors located on the cell surface and not by induction of or uptake into food vacuoles. We also present evidence that cells grown in an enriched proteose peptone medium are able to pair and undergo morphogenesis more readily than cells grown in 2% proteose peptone.  相似文献

The in vitro cultivation of Pneumocystis carinii in chick lung cell culture made it possible to observe the organism proceeding through its life cycle It provided the foundation for extensive scrocpidcmiologic studies, for in vitro drug screening, and for essential biological, metabolic, and morphologic research, in vitro culture made possible the discovery of P. carinii antigencmia, its biochemical nature, and its relevance to subclinical and clinical infection. Shell formation in molluscs begins early in embryogenesis duringsome stage of archenteron formation. Ultrastructural informationon early formation of external shells is available from onlya few bivalves and gastropods. Secretion of the very first shellmaterial by shell field epithelial cells is preceded by an invaginationof the dorsal ectoderm in the region of the shell field. A centuryago, this invagination was termed the "shell gland." As a secretoryfunction for this invagination has not yet been demonstratedand as the term "shell gland" has taken on various meaningsin the literature, the invagination will be referred to as theshell field invagination. The opening into the shell field invaginationseems to be circular in gastropods and elongate in bivalves.Accordingly initial organic shell material seems to form a ringin gastropods and a saddle in bivalves. As in adult molluscs,shells of pre-metamorphic molluscs are composed of both organicand inorganiccomponents. Ultrastructural data from bivalvesand gastropods indicate that the initial organic shell materialis secreted just outside the shell field invagination (acrossthe pore). Initial inorganic shell materials have not been localizednor their pathway traced into or through any pre-metamorphicmolluscs. New SEM and TEM data show that the invagination inthe bivalve Spisula solidissima is composed of a wide outerregion and very narrow inner region with the first shell materialforming at the junction between the two. This is unlike ultrastructuraldata available for other species. Many sections give the falseimpressions that: 1) the shell field invagination is closedto the outside and, 2) that the first organic shell materiallines the innermost region of the invagination. It is not clearwhether the cells of the outer invagination in this speciesare shell field cells. It is suggested that they are not.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS.
The fatty acids of whole cells and cilia from Paramecium tetraurelia strains 51s and d,95 and from Paramecium octaurelia strain 299s were identified. Ciliates were grown axenically in 3 types of culture media. More than 30 fatty acid species were identified and their structures determined by gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, argentation chromatography, hydro-genation, and fragmentation technics. The major fatty acids were hexadecanoic, octadecanoic, 9-octadecenoic, 9,12-octadecadi-enoic, 6,9,12-octadecatrienoic, and 5,8,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acids. Minor variations in fatty acid compositions were observed in cells grown in the different culture media as well as among the 3 strains. Major changes in fatty acid compositions occurred with culture age and cell density. The cells accumulated exogenous lipids in cytoplasmic vesicles. These lipids were utilized as culture age progressed. Both cellular volume and lipid content were greater in young than in older cultures. Fatty acid compositions of both whole cells and cilia changed with age and had a relative decrease in saturated, short-chained and odd-numbered carbon acids. Cilia lipids were enriched in long-chained, polyunsaturated acids as compared to lipids in whole cell extracts. Eicosatetra-enoic acid (arachidonic acid) increased to the greatest extent with age in both cellular and ciliary lipids, accounting for 20–60% of the total fatty acids in cilia. The age-related change in fatty acid composition in Paramecium is among the largest observed in eukaryotic organisms. It was concluded that some minor fatty acids found in Paramecium lipids were incorporated directly from certain culture media and that Paramecium had w 3, 6, and 9 pathways for polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis.  相似文献

The development of a high performance liquid chromatograph forthe separation of gibberellins is described. The system combineshigh efficiency, peak capacity, and sample capacity with rapidspeed of analysis. In addition, the constructional details ofa sensitive on-stream radioactivity monitor are outlined. Theoverall versatility of the chromatograph is demonstrated bythe separation of a range of 3H- and 14C-labelled Gibberellinsand gibberellin precursors. ABSTRACT The moose (Alces alces) is the most intensely managed game species in Sweden. Despite the biological and socioeconomical importance of moose, little is known of its population genetic structure. We analyzed 132 individuals from 4 geographically separate regions in Sweden for genetic variability at 6 microsatellite loci. We found evidence of strong substructuring and restricted levels of gene flow in this potentially mobile mammal. FST values were around 10%, and assignment tests indicated 3 genetically distinct populations over the study area. Spatial autocorrelation analysis provided a genetic patch size of approximately 420 km, implying that moose less than this distance apart are genetically more similar than 2 random individuals. Allele and genotype frequency distributions suggested a recent bottleneck in southern Sweden. Results indicate that moose may be more genetically divergent than currently anticipated, and therefore, the strong hunting pressure that is maintained over all of Sweden may have considerable local effects on genetic diversity. Sustainable moose hunting requires identification of spatial genetic structure to ensure that separate, genetically distinct subpopulations are not overharvested.  相似文献
