Windbreaks of coir netting were erected in apple orchards during the flowering period in 1969 and 1970 in an attempt to increase the number of insect pollinators present. Suction traps were used to sample flying insects; insects visiting trees were sampled by examination of flowers. The sheltered zone behind the windbreaks contained more of most species of insects than elsewhere. Increases in final fruit set of approximately 30% in 1969 (cv. Cox's Orange Pippin) and 20 % in 1970 (cv. White Jersey) occurred in trees receiving maximum shelter, and these were due mainly to the increased abundance, and possibly increased activity, of honey bees there. Fruit size was not reduced where yields were increased.  相似文献

It has previously been proposed that sex is selected for in organisms living in antagonistic biotic environments. Here, the contrasting case of mutualistic biotic environments is considered. In these environments, it is argued that there should be selection against sex and an accompanying low rate of genetic change. This proposition is tested on mutualistic symbioses with substantial histories of co-evolution in which one partner, the inhabitant, lives partly or wholly inside the other, the exhabitant. This asymmetry between the partners means that inhabitants should exhibit a reduction in sex in comparison to related free-living taxa and a lower rate of genetic change than exhabitants.
The patterns that emerge from an analysis of 10 kinds of mutualistic symbiosis strongly support these predictions. Where adequate information is available, sex is usually reduced in inhabitants in comparison to related free-living taxa, although it remains widespread in exhabitants. Inhabitants are also represented by a much smaller taxonomic diversity than exhabitants. Various alternative reasons for these patterns are considered but it is concluded that they are best explained by the mutualistic environment in which the inhabitants live.  相似文献

Root caps were isolated and cultured aseptically on variousdefined media. Under appropriate culture conditions plus suitableillumination a substance able to produce a positive geotropicresponse (i.e. a downward bending of roots) was formed in isolatedroot caps. The presence of this substance, or root cap inhibitor,was assessed by substituting cultured caps in place of capsof dark-grown roots. Normally these roots if kept in continuousdarkness will not respond to gravity (i.e. no bending). Optimalroot cap inhibitor production occurs on a relatively simplemedium, lacking sucrose, but supplemented with 10–9 MIAA. Protein synthesis is necessary for inhibitor productionand/or expression, whereas DNA synthesis is not.  相似文献

SUMMARY: Many of 110 strains of Serratia , isolated from soil, water, milk and dairy equipment, were biochemically closely related to the coli-aerogenes bacteria. Acid and gas was formed from glucose in 14 days at 30° by 53% and from lactose and MacConkey's broth by about 40%. All except one strain gave——++ IMViC reactions.
An inverse relationship was observed between depth of pigmentation and carbohydrate fermentation. Complete loss of pigment in mutant strains was not uncommon, and was associated with loss of proteolytic properties and increase of saccharolytic activity.
The majority of the strains had psychrophilic characteristics: 75% grew at 3–5°. Most strains showed moderate growth at 37°, but only 7 formed red pigment at that temperature.
All strains resembled Serratia marcescens in morphology, containing minute coccoid rods smaller than those of coli-aerogenes bacteria.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Networks of feeding interactions among insect herbivores and natural enemies such as parasitoids, describe the structure of these assemblages and may be critically linked to their dynamics and stability. The present paper describes the first quantitative study of parasitoids associated with gall‐inducing insect assemblages in the tropics, and the first investigation of vertical stratification in quantitative food web structure. 2. Galls and associated parasitoids were sampled in the understorey and canopy of Parque Natural Metropolitano in the Pacific forest, and in the understorey of San Lorenzo Protected Area in the Caribbean forest of Panama. Quantitative host–parasitoid food webs were constructed for each assemblage, including 34 gall maker species, 28 host plants, and 57 parasitoid species. 3. Species richness was higher in the understorey for parasitoids, but higher in the canopy for gall makers. There was an almost complete turnover in gall maker and parasitoid assemblage composition between strata, and the few parasitoid species shared between strata were associated with the same host species. 4. Most parasitoid species were host specific, and the few polyphagous parasitoid species were restricted to the understorey. 5. These results suggest that, in contrast to better‐studied leaf miner–parasitoid assemblages, the influence of apparent competition mediated by shared parasitoids as a structuring factor is likely to be minimal in the understorey and practically absent in the canopy, increasing the potential for coexistence of parasitoid species. 6. High parasitoid beta diversity and high host specificity, particularly in the poorly studied canopy, indicate that tropical forests may be even more species rich in hymenopteran parasitoids than previously suspected.  相似文献

Abstract 1. As species shift their geographic distributions, new feeding interactions with natural enemies such as parasitoids, and resources such as host plants, may be established, and existing interactions may be severed. 2. The leaf mining moth Phyllonorycter leucographella (Zeller, 1850) (Lep.: Gracillariidae) first colonised the southern United Kingdom in the mid 1980s associated with its ancestral host plant Pyracantha coccinea M. Roem. (Rosaceae), which is widely cultivated in the U.K. The moth has since spread northwards to central Scotland and has been recorded feeding on a novel host plant, Crataegus monogyna L. 3. The combined effects of latitude and time since colonisation on parasitoid community responses to the arrival of this novel host were investigated across its U.K. range. The response of parasitoids to colonisation of C. monogyna was also investigated. 4. Both the observed richness of parasitoid species associated with P. leucographella, and the proportion of P. leucographella parasitised declined with latitude and towards the current range margin. A combination of a latitudinal gradient in parasitoid and alternative host species richness is likely to lead to the trends in species richness and parasitism observed. 5. Experimental host patches exposed to parasitism beyond the current range margin of P. leucographella experienced low levels of parasitism consistent with range‐margin populations, indicating an instantaneous response by native parasitoids to availability of the novel host. Parasitism levels and numbers of associated species in the U.K. were similar to those observed in the species’ native range in Turkey. 6. The host plant switch to C. monogyna was not associated with an altered parasitoid assemblage, but rates of parasitism were significantly higher on the novel host plant. 7. Alterations in the incidence and frequency of victim‐enemy interactions as species shift their geographic ranges may be key in determining rates of range expansion and the impact invading species have on ecological communities.  相似文献
