Abstract. This paper concerns the effects of mate and seed availability on the rate of egg maturation in the bean weevil Callosobruchus maculatus (F.). Egg maturation starts before emergence from the seed and, provided that both oviposition sites and mates are available, eggs are laid at a rate determined by the number of oviposition sites, and mature at a similar rate. If seeds or mates are absent then a small number of eggs are laid, but oocytes continue to mature until the oviduct-capacity is approached. The number of eggs that a female can store is dependent on her body weight and does not correlate with the number of ovarioles. If, after a period in which oocyte development has been halted, conditions for egg-laying become suitable, then egg maturation can be re-started, but only after the oviducts have been emptied of eggs. The rate of egg maturation is then similar to that for females of the same age which have been maturing eggs since emergence.  相似文献

IMMUNE response to malignancy can be quantified by measurement of blastic transformation of host lymphocytes cultured with malignant target cells in which the capacity to synthesize polynucleotides has been blocked1–3. We have used this type of target cell culture to study the effects of pretreatment of malignant target cells with agents intended to accentuate host immune response. As an initial study we have evaluated the action of the Vibrio cholerae enzyme, neuraminidase, which removes sialic acid groups from the cancer cell membrane. There is evidence that removal of such saccharide radicals from the cell surface of experimental tumours facilitates immune recognition of antigens associated with the tumour cells4–6. We have observed an accentuated lymphoblastic response of rat host peripheral blood leucocytes cultured with Novikoif hepatoma target cells pretreated with neuraminidase. Eight out of eleven humans studied have shown a similar response to enzyme treated malignant cells.  相似文献

When cultured sycamore cells are homogenised in a phosphate-citrate buffer at pH 7.0 and the homogenate centrifuged two fractions are obtained both of which show the presence of an acid (opt. pH 4.0–4.5) and a neutral (opt. pH 7.0–7.4) invertase. The activity of the insoluble pellet appears to be located in its cell wall fragments. The acid and neutral invertases of the soluble fraction can be separated by fractional precipitation with (NH4SO4. The activities of these enzymes are low in stationary phase cells but they increase following subculture to reach peaks of activity towards the end of the period of most active cell growth and division and then decline again as the cells begin to enter stationary phase. The activities of both enzymes are higher in the cell wall than in the soluble fraction and the acid invertase reaches higher levels of activity than the neutral enzyme in both fractions. When cells are subcultured there occurs within a few hours an increase in the acid invertase and a decline in the neutral invertase activity in the cell wall fraction and a decline in the acid invertase of the soluble fraction prior to the large net increases in the activities of both enzymes in both locations which occurs as the cells embark upon cell division. The pattern of changes in the invertase activities through the growth cycle of batch propagated cultures is similar whether the cells are grown in sucrose, or glucose, or sucrose plus glucose; the highest levels of activities were recorded in the glucose-grown cells. The total yield of invertase activities and the distribution of activities between the soluble and cell wall fractions of the homogenates are affected by the pH of the extraction medium (within the range pH 4.0–8.0). It has not proved possible to completely remove the invertases from the cell wall fraction; upwards of 50 % of the acid invertase was recovered from this fraction by treatment with Triton-X followed by urea, but these treatments inactivated a high proportion of the neutral enzyme. These findings are compared with other studies on the activity and intra-cellular distribution of plant invertases and the possible roles of these enzymes discussed.  相似文献

1. The extent of spatial and temporal variation of microbial respiration was determined in a first-order, sand-bottomed, blackwater stream on the coastal plain of south-eastern Virginia, U.S.A.
2. Annual mean respiration rates (as g O2 m–3 h–1) differed significantly among substrata: leaf litter, 12.9; woody debris, 2.4; surface sediment, 0.8; hyporheic sediment, 0.4; water column, 0.003. Rates associated with wood were higher than those with leaves when expressed per unit surface area.
3. Highest respiration rates on leaves, wood and in the water column occurred during the summer, whereas rates in the sediments were greatest during the late autumn and winter. Water temperature, as well as particulate organic matter and nitrogen content of the substrata, was correlated positively with respiration rates.
4. A stepwise multiple regression showed that temperature and nitrogen content together explained 88% of the variation in respiration rates of leaves and wood. In contrast, particulate organic matter content and nitrogen content explained 89–90% of the variation in respiration in the sediments. Although water temperature was a significant factor in the sediment multiple regressions, its addition as an independent variable improved the regression models only slightly.
5. Annual mean respiration in the stream channel, based on the proportional amount of respiration occurring associated with each type of substratum during each month, was 1.1 kg O2 m–2 yr–1. Seventy per cent of respiration in the stream occurred in the hyporheic zone, 8–13% occurred in the surface sediment, leaf litter or woody debris, and < 1% occurred in the water column. Approximately 16% of total detritus, or 40% of non-woody detritus, stored in the stream during the year was lost to microbial respiration.  相似文献

Abstract The population structure and reproductive biology of Saururus cernuus (Lizard's Tail; Saururaceae; Piperales), is documented in five sites in southern Louisiana (Mississippi Delta). The species is common throughout the southeastern United States in marshes, along streams, edges of lakes, and in the understory of moist forests. The clonal species exhibits sexual and vegetative reproduction. Wind and insects both play important roles in pollination. Pollen may be borne by insects directly. Alternatively, the pollen may be borne by wind after its release is triggered from pendulous floral spikes (the “Lizard's Tail”) by either wind or insect landings (insect-mediated wind pollination). The plants are self-incompatible and seed set results from a combination of pollination modes with wind pollination being the primary mode (rare in the Magnoliidae). Inflorescence and floral structure exhibit adaptive features that facilitate the various modes of pollen transfer, viz., numerous, small scented, protogynous flowers with no perianth, ultraviolet patterns produced by stamen filaments, small pollen grains, curved inflorescences, and exerted stamens, etc. Fruit production and seed germination are documented and plant growth and densities are compared in sunny versus forest sites.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We instrumented 36 wolverines (Gulo gulo) on 2 study areas in western Montana and one study area on the Idaho-Montana (USA) border: 14 (9 M, 5 F) on the Pioneer study area, 19 (11 M, 8 F) on the Glacier study area, and 3 (2 M, 1 F) on the Clearwater study area. During 2002–2005, harvest from licensed trapping accounted for 9 (6 M, 3 F) of 14 mortalities, including individuals from all 3 study areas. Based on Akaike's Information Criterion adjusted for small sample sizes (AICc) rankings of 8 a priori models, a trapping model and a trapping-by-sex interaction model were equally supported (ΔAICc < 2) in explaining wolverine survival. Estimated annual survival was 0.80 when we did not consider harvest, whereas additive mortality from harvest reduced annual survival to 0.57. Glacier National Park in the Glacier study area provided some refuge as evidenced by an annual survival rate of 0.77 compared to 0.51 for the Pioneer Mountain study area. We incorporated these survival rates into a simple Lefkovitch stage-based model to examine rates of population change. The finite rate of population change (Λ) for the Glacier study area was 1.1, indicating a stable to slightly increasing population, whereas Λ for the Pioneer study area was 0.7, indicating a 30% annual population decrease during our study. Changes in Λ for both study areas were most sensitive to adult survival. In 2004, we used a Lincoln Index to estimate that 12.8 ± 2.9 (95% CI) wolverines resided in the 4 mountain ranges comprising the Pioneer study area, suggesting that small, island ranges in western Montana supported few individuals. Our results suggest that if wolverines are harvested, they should be managed within individual mountain ranges or small groupings of mountain ranges to limit mortality to within biologically defined limits in recognition of the increased vulnerabilities owing to low fecundity and low population numbers in small mountain ranges. We found that refugia, such as Glacier National Park, were important by reducing trap mortality and providing immigrants to the surrounding population, but even large parks were inadequate to provide complete protection to wolverines from trapping as they ranged outside park borders.  相似文献

The Pampas deer ( Ozotoceros bezoarticus L. 1758) is the most endangered neotropical cervid, and in the past occupied a wide range of open habitats including grassland, pampas, savanna, and cerrado (Brazil) from 5° to 41° S. To better understand the effect of habitat fragmentation on gene flow and genetic variation, and to uncover genetic units for conservation, we examined DNA sequences from the mitochondrial control region of 54 individuals from six localities distributed throughout the present geographical range of the Pampas deer. Our results suggest that the control region of the Pampas deer is one of the most polymorphic of any mammal. This remarkably high variability probably reflects large historic population sizes of millions of individuals in contrast to numbers of fewer than 80 000 today. Gene flow between populations is generally close to one migrant per generation and, with the exception of two populations from Argentina, all populations are significantly differentiated. The degree of gene flow was correlated with geographical distance between populations, a result consistent with limited dispersal being the primary determinant of genetic differentiation between populations. The molecular genetic results provide a mandate for habitat restoration and reintroduction of Pampas deer so that levels of genetic variation can be preserved and historic patterns of abundance can be reconstructed. However, the source of individuals for reintroduction generally should be from populations geographically closest to those now in danger of extinction.  相似文献

已往的研究对于实验室应用的各种啮齿类动物,如大鼠和小鼠骨骼肌蛋白表达的特性已有报道.然而,至今不清楚其它啮齿类动物如野生鼠骨骼肌蛋白的表达或性双态性的特征,而这些野生鼠的行为学、形态学及生理学特点均已有报道.已知骨骼肌的肌球蛋白重链(MHC)成分与其功能特性有关.我们研究了草原田鼠的肱三头肌、胫骨前肌、腓肠肌和比目鱼肌MHC蛋白表达的性别特性.应用SDS聚丙烯酰胺凝胶电泳法测定MHC Ⅰ型、Ⅱa型、Ⅱd/x和Ⅱb型的蛋白表达相对含量.结果表明:与雌鼠相比,雄鼠的比目鱼肌湿重较大,胫骨前肌的MHC Ⅱa蛋白量表达较高.未见骨骼肌重量及MHC蛋白表达含量在雌雄鼠间的性别差异.血中睾酮的浓度差异可能不影响外周骨骼肌蛋白的表达特性.然而,与过去在大鼠、兔和小鼠中的已报道的结果相比,草原田鼠骨骼肌MHC的表达显示了更多异质性.推测这可能与草原田鼠和其它小型哺乳类动物生存的自然环境和功能需要有关.  相似文献
