The present study explored the intraspecific genetic diversity, dispersal patterns and phylogeographic relationships of Culex quinquefasciatus Say (Diptera: Culicidae) in Malaysia using reference data available in GenBank in order to reveal this species' phylogenetic relationships. A statistical parsimony network of 70 taxa aligned as 624 characters of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene and 685 characters of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (COII) gene revealed three haplotypes (A1–A3) and four haplotypes (B1–B4), respectively. The concatenated sequences of both COI and COII genes with a total of 1309 characters revealed seven haplotypes (AB1–AB7). Analysis using tcs indicated that haplotype AB1 was the common ancestor and the most widespread haplotype in Malaysia. The genetic distance based on concatenated sequences of both COI and COII genes ranged from 0.00076 to 0.00229. Sequence alignment of Cx. quinquefasciatus from Malaysia and other countries revealed four haplotypes (AA1–AA4) by the COI gene and nine haplotypes (BB1–BB9) by the COII gene. Phylogenetic analyses demonstrated that Malaysian Cx. quinquefasciatus share the same genetic lineage as East African and Asian Cx. quinquefasciatus. This study has inferred the genetic lineages, dispersal patterns and hypothetical ancestral genotypes of Cx. quinquefasciatus.  相似文献

The possibility that desiccation tolerance in mosses may bedependent on an ability to process species of activated oxygenwas investigated using the tolerant sand-dune moss Tortula ruraliformis(Besch.) Grout and the sensitive minerotrophic flush speciesDicranella palustris (Dicks.) ex. E. F. Warb (D. squarrosa (Starke)Schp.). Mosses were desiccated in low and high irradiance andresponses of these plants compared to those of dark-desiccatedand hydrated control plants. Both desiccated and undesiccatedplants of T. ruraliformis had a higher superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity than D. palustris, but had similar, or loweractivities of the chloroplastic H2O2-processing enzymes peroxidaseand ascorbate peroxidase. In T. ruraliformis, desiccation inboth light and dark led to a significant increase in SOD activity,but did not consistently stimulate the activities of peroxidaseand ascorbate peroxidase. In D. palustris, desiccation in combinationwith irradiance led to a decrease in peroxidase activity, buthad little affect on the activities of other activated oxygen-processingenzymes. Catalase, an extra-chloroplastic enzyme, was up to7-fold more active in hydrated T. ruraliformis than in D. palustris,but desiccation resulted in significant decreases in the activityof this enzyme in both species. Regardless of irradiance level,there was a depletion of the anti-oxidant ascorbic acid in bothspecies when desiccated. Only in T. ruraliformis was there asynthesis of  相似文献

Abstract. Feeding cycles and daily locomotory patterns of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica L. (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), were correlated with the ovarian development cycle. To meet the nutrient requirement for ovarian development, females increased feeding before forming oothecae. Locomotory activity also increased when females became sexually receptive. All these activities reached a peak just before the formation of oothecae. Ovarian development ceased and locomotion and food consumption decreased during pregnancy. Both mated and virgin females showed similar reproductive cycles, but those of mated females were more precisely timed (intervals between successive oothecae, and pregnancy duration, were 5 ± 0.6 and 17 ± 0.6 days, respectively). However, the intervals between successive oothecae of virgin females were longer and less synchronized. During this longer interval, feeding took place immediately following the discharge of the ootheca, but locomotory activity increased 5 days later when females became sexually receptive. Mated females increased locomotory activities 1 or 2 days before the end of pregnancy, presumably searching for deposition sites for oothecae. Female adults were found to exhibit a daily nocturnal locomotory pattern. However, under the physiological demands of reproduction, the pattern could be changed, for example by increasing activity during photophase when females were sexually receptive. The physiological effects of reproduction override the control of the daily locomotory pattern by its diel clock.  相似文献

1. The biological productivity of floodplain rivers is intimately related to their flow regimes and it has been proposed that fish production should be linked to components of the flow regime in productivity models. To assess applicability of existing models of productivity in floodplain rivers, we tested predictions about growth during the early life stages of a common, short‐lived fish (Australian smelt Retropinna semoni) in a non‐flow‐altered, temperate Australian floodplain river. 2. The morphometric condition of larval and juvenile fish measured over a five‐year period was positively related to annual discharge, but the highest average seasonal growth rates occurred in two years of contrasting hydrology, one with early spring flooding and the other with predominantly low flows and a late season (within channel) flow pulse. 3. Analysis of daily growth measures indicated that timing, river height, the duration of in‐channel flow events and antecedent flood events are all significant factors influencing the early growth of Australian smelt. The flexible manner in which fish growth responds to these factors appears to be an effective early life history strategy for a short‐lived species occupying a highly variable environment. 4. Growth rates conformed to some predictions of the Flood Pulse Concept (in particular the Extended Flood Pulse Concept), but specific growth responses suggest that the Riverine Productivity Model and tenets of the Low Flow Recruitment Hypothesis best describe the production of Australian smelt in this system. We suggest that none of the existing conceptual models adequately describes fish productivity in temperate Australian floodplain rivers but that aspects of each are likely to be relevant under different flow conditions.  相似文献

The diet composition of Emperor Penguin Aptenodytes forsteri chicks was examined at Auster and Taylor Glacier colonies, near Australia's Mawson station, Antarctica, between hatching in mid-winter and fledging in mid-summer by "water-offloading" adults. Chicks at both colonies were fed a similar suite of prey species. Crustaceans occurred in 82% of stomach samples at Auster and 87% of stomachs at Taylor Glacier and were heavily digested: their contribution to food mass could not be quantified. Fish, primarily bentho-pelagic species, accounted for 52% by number and 55% by mass of chick diet at Auster, and squid formed the remainder. At Taylor Glacier the corresponding values were 27% by number and 31% by mass of fish and 73% by number and 69% by mass of squid. Of the 33 species or taxa identified, the fish Trematomus eulepidotus and the squid Psychroteuthis glacialis and Allu-roteuthis antarcticus accounted for 64% and 74% of the diets by mass at Auster and Taylor Glacier, respectively. The sizes of fish varied temporally but not in a linear manner from winter to summer. Adult penguins captured fish ranging in length from 60 mm ( Pfeura-gramma antarcticum ) to 250 mm ( T. eulepidotus ) and squid (P. glacialis ) from 19 to 280 mm in mantle length. The length-frequency distribution of P. glacialis showed seasonal variation, with the size of squid increasing from winter to summer. The energy density of chick diet mix increased significantly prior to "fledging".  相似文献

Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) (genus Closterovirus , family Closteroviridae ) causes some of the more important viral diseases of citrus worldwide. The ability to map disease-inducing determinants of CTV is needed to develop better diagnostic and disease control procedures. A distinctive phenotype of some isolates of CTV is the ability to induce seedling yellows (SY) in sour orange, lemon and grapefruit seedlings. In Florida, the decline isolate of CTV, T36, induces SY, whereas a widely distributed mild isolate, T30, does not. To delimit the viral sequences associated with the SY syndrome, we created a number of T36/T30 hybrids by substituting T30 sequences into different regions of the 3' half of the genome of an infectious cDNA of T36. Eleven T36/T30 hybrids replicated in Nicotiana benthamiana protoplasts. Five of these hybrids formed viable virions that were mechanically transmitted to Citrus macrophylla , a permissive host for CTV. All induced systemic infections, similar to that of the parental T36 clone. Tissues from these C. macrophylla source plants were then used to graft inoculate sour orange and grapefruit seedlings. Inoculation with three of the T30/T36 hybrid constructs induced SY symptoms identical to those of T36; however, two hybrids with T30 substitutions in the p23-3' nontranslated region (NTR) (nucleotides 18 394–19 296) failed to induce SY. Sour orange seedlings infected with a recombinant non-SY p23-3' NTR hybrid also remained symptomless when challenged with the parental virus (T36), demonstrating the potential feasibility of using engineered constructs of CTV to mitigate disease.  相似文献
