Treatment of intact barley root systems with salts of certainaliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids caused the loss of potassium,nitrate, and u.v.-absorbing material into the surrounding solution.The extent of this loss depended on the lipophilic nature ofthe organic acid used, and on the concentration of its undissociatedform. Neutral derivatives of the organic acids, namely amidesand esters, were not effective in causing ion loss.  相似文献

Long neglected has been the extensive and more or less intimate association of protozoa with a wide variety of other cells, either prokaryotic or eukaryotic in nature. Yet study of such relationships can provide important information concerning certain basic aspects of cellular evolution in general. A survey is offered here of the whole range of such symbiotic associations (i.e. with species of protozoa serving as hosts) with the purposes of drawing attention to the exciting possibilities of such research and of reviewing significant findings made to date. Because of the vastness of the overall field, examples and discussion are primarily limited to consideration of the following major studies: methanogenic bacteria in certain ciliates, bacterial endosymbionts of the large freshwater amoeba Pelomyxa palustris (itself an amazing organism from an evolutionary/phylogenetic point of view), the rod-shaped bacteria found in Amoeba proteus, the “Greek-letter” prokaryotes of Paramecium species, the xenosomes (sensu stricto) of the marine scuticociliate Parauronema acutum, and the diverse algal endosymbionts of similarly diverse protozoan taxa–ciliates, flagellates, radiolarians, acantharians, and foraminifera.  相似文献

Ultrastructure of both undifferentiated (promastigote and paramastigote) and differentiated (opisthomastigote) forms of Herpetomonas megaseliae is described. There is a posterior migration of the kinetoplast at the end of the exponential growth phase. The posterior extension of the flagellar pocket precedes migration of the kinetoplast. Opisthomastigotes have an electron-translucent mitochondrial matrix in comparison with undifferentiated forms. The Golgi body changes from a stack of flattened sacs to an aggregation of vesicles. Several structures previously reported from Trypanosomatidae, e.g. subpellicular organelles, pellicular microtubules, membrane whorls, stored metabolic products, surface blebs, and an intraflagellar body are also present in H. megaseliae.  相似文献

Abstract: Numerous studies of behavior and ecology of northern bobwhites (Colinus virginianus) have depended on radiotagging and telemetry for data collection. Excluding the presumably short-term effects of trapping, handling, and attaching radiotransmitters, researchers often assume that little bias is associated with estimating survival and behavioral parameters associated with this technique. However, researchers have not adequately examined these effects on organisms being investigated and have thus assumed demographic information obtained from such methods are valid. In light of this conjecture, it is imperative to evaluate methodological assumptions to ensure research is statistically valid and biologically meaningful. Therefore, we used Burnham's model and program MARK to analyze survival estimates of individually banded and radiotagged bobwhites during an 8-year period (1997–2004) consisting of 6,568 individuals (2,527 radiotagged) via combined analysis of mark—recapture, dead recovery (via harvest), and radiotelemetry data to test the effects of radiotransmitters on bobwhite survival. We also compared band—recapture survival estimates to Kaplan—Meier survival estimates, and we examined the effects of various other factors (e.g., temporal, spatial) on bobwhite survival. Based on Akaike's model selection criterion, the best model including the radiotransmitter covariate (Akaike's Information Criterion adjusted for small sample size bias and overdispersion relative value = 0.72) did not explain more of the variation in survival than models without this effect. Thus, we found the effect of radiotransmitters as negligible. Bobwhite survival varied relative to spatial (e.g., site), temporal (e.g., yr and season), and gender effects. Average annual survival for the 8-year period was 22.76% (1.50 SE) for banded-only and 21.72% (1.49 SE) for radiotagged birds. Survival rate varied annually, ranging from 12.42% (7.51 SE) to 37.16% (8.27 SE), and seasonally, ranging from 23.82% (2.71 SE) to 65.06% (3.23 SE); however, between group (banded-only, radiotagged) survival differences were still inconsequential. We conclude that for our study, radiotelemetry provided reliable survival estimates of an intensively managed bobwhite population, where supplemental food was provided, and this information provided useful data to make practical habitat management decisions. We believe that future radiotelemetry studies would benefit as a whole if researchers conducted similar analyses prior to presenting their results from radiotelemetry data, especially for populations that are more food limited.  相似文献

The susceptibility of members of the Anopheles sinensis Group in Korea to insecticides was evaluated under laboratory conditions using 15 insecticides currently used by local public health centers in Korea. The insecticides included eight pyrethroids, six organophosphates and a pyrazol analogue. Based on their LC50 values, the order of susceptibility of An. sinensis larvae to the insecticides was bifenthrin, chlorfenapyr, α-cypermethrin and λ-cyhalothrin, with values of 0.009, 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08 p.p.m., respectively. The least susceptibility was obtained with fenitrothion, with an LC50 of 7.7 p.p.m. In the comparative resistance test, the resistance ratios (RR) of 14 insecticides were compared to each other using two strains of members of the An. sinensis Group collected in the locality in 2001 and 2008. Anopheles spp. demonstrated higher RR to organophosphates such as fenthion, and low RR for the pyrethroids. Among the organophosphates, fenthion had the highest RR of 33.3 and 270.0 fold differences for LC50 and LC90 values, respectively. Among the pyrethroids, permethrin was observed to have the highest RR of 3.8 and 1.8 fold differences for LC50 and LC90 values, respectively. However, there were no significant differences in susceptibility to chlorfenapyr, chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin and fenitrothion. An. sinensis s. l. was more susceptible to the six insecticides bifenthrin, λ-cyhalothrin, α-cypermethrin, cypermethrin, cyfluthrin and pyridafenthion, showing 0.03, 0.06, 0.3, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.4 fold differences in resistance rates (RR LC50), respectively.  相似文献

Animals faced with environmental perturbations must adapt orface extinction. The respiratory complex, specifically hemoglobins,is perhaps the best system to study such adaptation becauseit exists at the organism—environment interface. Fishare particularly useful models because they respond directlyto such environmental variables as temperature, oxygen, pH,carbon dioxide, and salinity. Our experiments have addressedthe molecular, cellular, and physiological mechanisms employedby fish to maintain respiratory homeostasis in the wake of changingtemperature and oxygen. Immediate, intermediate, and long-termadaptation can only be understood when the hemoglobin's ligandbinding properties and the cellular and hormonal regulationof various ligands are considered simultaneously. We describea detailed thermodynamic model for the binding of oxygen, protons,and organic phosphates to hemoglobin; discuss the role of multiplehemoglobins; and present evidence for physiological and geneticregulation of hemoglobin's major allosteric modifiers in responseto environmental stress in the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus  相似文献

Four species of the tabulate coral Catenipora are present in the Selkirk Member of the Red River Formation at Garson, Manitoba. They provide an opportunity to compare the growth characteristics of multiple, co‐occurring species that produced cateniform coralla. Corallite increase, cyclomorphism and other growth features show high variability within and/or among the species. A total of five types of lateral increase and two types of axial increase are recognized. Lateral increase accounts for over 80% of all occurrences of corallite increase in each species, with the four species differing significantly in the relative frequency of the various types of lateral increase. The type of axial increase, megacorallites and agglutinated patches of corallites that developed from normal, undamaged corallites in C. foerstei are species specific. In all species, cyclic fluctuations in the tabularial area of corallites are considered to be annual, and the variable growth rates within colonies and species are attributed to differences in astogenetic stages or environmental conditions. Average annual vertical growth was positively correlated with average tabularial area in C. foerstei, C. cf. robusta and C. rubra. Catenipora cf. agglomeratiformis, however, which had the lowest average tabularial area and greatest sensitivity to sediment influx, had a high average growth rate comparable to that of C. rubra, which had the largest average tabularial area. The formation of ranks or lacunae by certain types of lateral increase seems to have been the most effective strategy for maintaining and/or expanding the colony growth surface in all four species, and was most common in C. cf. agglomeratiformis. A reptant growth pattern, characterized by creeping ranks, permitted effective recovery of damaged parts as well as quick formation of new ranks or lacunae.
