For long‐distance migrants, such as many of the shorebirds, understanding the demographic implications of behavioural strategies adopted by individuals is key to understanding how environmental change will affect populations. Stable isotopes have been used in the terrestrial environment to infer migratory strategies of birds but rarely in marine or estuarine systems. Here, we show that the stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen in flight feathers can be used to identify at least three discrete wintering areas of the Red Knot Calidris canutus on the eastern seaboard of the Americas, ranging from southeastern USA to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. In spring, birds migrate northwards via Delaware Bay, in the northeastern USA, the last stopping point before arrival in Arctic breeding areas, where they fatten up on eggs of spawning Horseshoe Crabs Limulus polyphemus. The isotope ratios of feather samples taken from birds caught in the Bay during May 2003 were compared with feathers obtained from known wintering areas in Florida (USA), Bahia Lomas (Chile) and Rio Grande (Argentina). In May 2003, 30% of birds passing through the Bay had Florida‐type ‘signatures’, 58% were Bahia Lomas‐type, 6% were Rio Grande‐type and 7% were unclassified. Some of the southern wintering birds had started moulting flight feathers in northern areas, suspended this, and then finished their moult in the wintering areas, whereas others flew straight to the wintering areas before commencing moult. This study shows that stable isotopes can be used to infer migratory strategies of coastal‐feeding shorebirds and provides the basis for identifying the moult strategy and wintering areas of birds passing through Delaware Bay. Coupled with banding and marking birds as individuals, stable isotopes provide a powerful tool for estimating population‐specific demographic parameters and, in this case, further our understanding of the migration systems of the declining Nearctic populations of Red Knot.  相似文献

Taylor, J. R. N., Novellie, L. and Liebenberg, N. v. d. W. 1985.Protein body degradation in the starchy endosperm of germinatingsorghum.—J. exp. Bot. 36: 1287–1295. Transmission electron micrographs of starchy endosperms of germinatingsorghum indicate that the protein bodies are degraded predominantlyby progressive hydrolysis of prolamin from their surface. Theappearance of holes within partially degraded protein bodiesindicates that some internal hydrolysis also takes place. Chemicalanalyses of protein bodies isolated at different stages duringgermination showed that their amino acid composition and electrophoreticpattern remained relatively unchanged during hydrolysis. Theend result of protein body degradation was that the organellescompletely disappeared leaving empty starchy endosperm cells. The protein bodies did not swell prior to or during degradation. This mode of protein body degradation differs from that in germinatingdicotyledonous seeds and in the aleurone layer and embryo ofcereal seeds but was identical to the mode of prolamin proteinbody degradation in the starchy endosperm of germinating riceseeds. Key words: Sorghum bicolor, protein body degradation, prolamin  相似文献

The colour patterns of Heliconius butterflies are built up from an array of serially homologous pattern elements known as the nymphalid groundplan. An analysis of the phenotypic effects of ten genetic loci from H. melpomene and H. cydno reveals that each alters the expression either of a single element of the groundplan or of an entire row of serially homologous elements. Five of the ten loci affect the size (or presence/absence) of specific pattern elements, two affect the colour in which a pattern element is expressed, two affect pattern-inducing activity of the wing veins, and one appears to affect an overall threshold for pattern determination. Three of the ten loci have identical effects on homologues of the fore- and hindwing. We show that most of the apparently large and qualitative phenotypic effects of these genes can be readily explained by relatively small and quantitative changes in the dimensions or positions of specific pattern elements.  相似文献

1. At least sixteen species of parasitoid flies in the genus Pseudacteon (family Phoridae) attack fire ants in the Solenopsis saevissima subcomplex in South America. Little is known of behavioural or ecological differences among Pseudacteon parasitoids of fire ants, although their coexistence in multispecies communities would suggest that important differences exist. Seven Pseudacteon species in two separate communities were studied in south-east Brazil. The way in which hosts detect and respond to the presence of parasitoids, attack rates of the parasitoids, and host location behaviour of the parasitoids were examined.
2. Reductions in fire ant recruitment were more closely related to the number of ants attacked along a foraging trail than to the amount of time that a phorid was present.
3. Pseudacteon solenopsidis differed from other phorid species by flying backwards while pursuing ants, by attacking at lower rates than other phorids, and by spending longer around fire ant foraging trails than other phorids before departing. Fire ant recruitment to food often rebounded in the continued presence of P. solenopsidis.
4. In each of the two communities, certain Pseudacteon species appeared frequently at Solenopsis foraging trails, whereas others appeared predominantly at mound disturbances. Two distinct size classes of phorids were present in each community, and the community with the larger ant host species also had a third and larger phorid species. No phorid species from the same community had similar body sizes and similar host location behaviours, although numerous species from different communities shared both of these traits.
5. Heterogeneity in host size and in the ecological circumstances under which hosts are vulnerable to attack appears to have influenced the evolution and perhaps maintenance of diverse Pseudacteon communities.  相似文献
