Comparative peptide specificity of cell wall, membrane and intracellular peptidases of group N streptococci 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Solubilized cell walls of group N streptococci contain two electrophoretically distinct peptidases, one of which hydrolysed trileucine only, while the second hydrolysed a wide range of di- and tripeptides. Neither enzyme possessed leucine aminopeptidase or endopeptidase activity. Four and three peptidases, respectively, were separated in intracellular extracts of Streptococcus lactis subsp. lactis and Strep, lactis subsp. cremoris produced by osmotic lysis of spheroplasts. In contrast with the cell-wall extracts, two of the peptidases had broad specificites, though only one of these hydrolysed trileucine. Purified membranes of Strep. lactis subsp. lactis contained only one electrophoretically distinct peptidase of very narrow specificity. There were small differences between the numbers of peptides hydrolysed by cell wall preparations from milk-grown or broth-grown cells. 相似文献

An amphidiploid derived by colchicine treatment of a hybridbetween Triticum aestivum cv Chinese Spring and Thinopyrum bessarabicumwas found to be more salt tolerant than the wheat cultivarsChinese Spring, Kharchia and Ciano 79 in terms of survival andgrain yield at 250 mol m3 NaCl. Tolerance was relatedto the ability of the amphidiploid to exclude Na and Cl fromthe shoots, and particularly from the young leaves, developinginflorescence and grain. There was no relationship between thesalt tolerance of the different species and varieties testedand changes in the concentrations of other solutes. The amphidiploiddid not inherit the high glycinebetaine concentrations characteristicof the wheatgrass parent. Abstract This study investigates the importance of climate as a factor influencing the southern distributional limit of the common blossom bat (Syconycteris australis). Using the climatic predictive model BIOCLIM and 73 locality records, 5. australis was predicted to have a coastal distribution in eastern Australia, where winter temperatures are relatively warm and moist conditions prevail throughout the year. The actual southern limit of S. australis, determined by mist-netting suitable habitats, was found to be at Booti-Booti (32°19'S 152°3l'E) on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. BIOCLIM predicted the southerly limit of 5. australis to be 150–200km further south of their actual limit. Booti-Booti was occupied at relatively low levels of abundance year round, while the abundance of S. australis at a site 50 km to the north was much greater, fluctuating with changes in Banksia flower numbers. Seasonal range extensions beyond Booti-Booti were not detected, despite the availability of apparently suitable habitat at Myall Lakes only 20–35 km further south. Metabolic costs of S. australis at Booti-Booti were estimated to exceed basal metabolic rate (BMR) by 4.5 times, well above the physiologically predicted limit of 2.5 times BMR. These results, together with the lack of range extensions and the close correspondence of BIOCLIM'S predicted southern limit of S. australis with their actual limit, suggest that the bat's southern distribution is limited by cold, wet winters and dry summers. 相似文献

The intensification of the hydrological cycle, with an observed and modeled increase in drought incidence and severity, underscores the need to quantify drought effects on carbon cycling and the terrestrial sink. FLUXNET, a global network of eddy covariance towers, provides dense data streams of meteorological data, and through flux partitioning and gap filling algorithms, estimates of net ecosystem productivity (FNEP), gross ecosystem productivity (P), and ecosystem respiration (R). We analyzed the functional relationship of these three carbon fluxes relative to evaporative fraction (EF), an index of drought and site water status, using monthly data records from 238 micrometeorological tower sites distributed globally across 11 biomes. The analysis was based on relative anomalies of both EF and carbon fluxes and focused on drought episodes by biome and climatic season. Globally P was ≈50% more sensitive to a drought event than R. Network‐wide drought‐induced decreases in carbon flux averaged ?16.6 and ?9.3 g C m?2 month?1 for P and R, i.e., drought events induced a net decline in the terrestrial sink. However, in evergreen forests and wetlands drought was coincident with an increase in P or R during parts of the growing season. The most robust relationships between carbon flux and EF occurred during climatic spring for FNEP and in climatic summer for P and R. Upscaling flux sensitivities to a global map showed that spatial patterns for all three carbon fluxes were linked to the distribution of croplands. Agricultural areas exhibited the highest sensitivity whereas the tropical region had minimal sensitivity to drought. Combining gridded flux sensitivities with their uncertainties and the spatial grid of FLUXNET revealed that a more robust quantification of carbon flux response to drought requires additional towers in all biomes of Africa and Asia as well as in the cropland, shrubland, savannah, and wetland biomes globally. 相似文献

Two independent methods of estimating gross ecosystem production (GEP) were compared over a period of 2 years at monthly integrals for a mixed forest of conifers and deciduous hardwoods at Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts. Continuous eddy flux measurements of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) provided one estimate of GEP by taking day to night temperature differences into account to estimate autotrophic and heterotrophic respiration. GEP was also estimated with a quantum efficiency model based on measurements of maximum quantum efficiency (Qmax), seasonal variation in canopy phenology and chlorophyll content, incident PAR, and the constraints of freezing temperatures and vapour pressure deficits on stomatal conductance. Quantum efficiency model estimates of GEP and those derived from eddy flux measurements compared well at monthly integrals over two consecutive years (R2= 0–98). Remotely sensed data were acquired seasonally with an ultralight aircraft to provide a means of scaling the leaf area and leaf pigmentation changes that affected the light absorption of photosynthetically active radiation to larger areas. A linear correlation between chlorophyll concentrations in the upper canopy leaves of four hardwood species and their quantum efficiencies (R2= 0–99) suggested that seasonal changes in quantum efficiency for the entire canopy can be quantified with remotely sensed indices of chlorophyll. Analysis of video data collected from the ultralight aircraft indicated that the fraction of conifer cover varied from < 7% near the instrument tower to about 25% for a larger sized area. At 25% conifer cover, the quantum efficiency model predicted an increase in the estimate of annual GEP of < 5% because unfavourable environmental conditions limited conifer photosynthesis in much of the non-growing season when hardwoods lacked leaves. 相似文献

Genetic control of durable resistance to yellow rust (Puccinia striiformis) in the wheat cultivar Hybride de Bersée 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The wheat cultivar Hybride de Bersee is described as possessing durable resistance to yellow rust. Some races of Puccinia striiformis can infect it at the seedling stage but not severely in the field. Using euploid and aneuploid stocks of Bersee it was shown that a large part of this resistance was controlled by chromosome 5BS-7BS, the effect being detectable in seedlings and at later growth stages. Measurements of spore production from infected seedlings showed that the line ditelosomic for the 5BS arm of the chromosome was more resistant than the line ditelosomic for the 7BS arm under environments favouring high spore production, but more susceptible under environments favouring low spore production. Thus both arms of the chromosome could contribute to resistance in appropriate environments. Chromosome 5BS-7BS did not carry the factors controlling the race-specific resistance to race 37 E132 of P. striiformis. The possibility of exploiting the resistance carried by chromosome 5BS-7BS in wheat breeding programmes is discussed. 相似文献

Disinfection capacity determinations using solutions prepared from effervescent tablets of sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) and from solutions of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCI) indicated high activity against a range of organisms, which represent adequate safety margins for disinfection. NaDCC showed significantly higher activity than NaOCl solution against all bacterial species tested but activity against Candida albicans was similar. Results indicate that differences in activity between NaDCC and NaOC1 formulations are not entirely due to pH effects and that fundamental differences exist between properties and mode of action of the 2 hypochlorite systems. 相似文献
