High-level phylogeny of early Tertiary rodents: dental evidence   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Major crown‐groups of rodents were well established in the early Tertiary, and fossils provide an invaluable window into their evolutionary history. The main focus of this project was to perform a cladistic assessment of the dental evidence for early Tertiary rodent cladogenesis – the masticatory apparatus and teeth are the most frequently preserved anatomical features in the fossil record. We focused on groups that existed in a period corresponding to their early history, combining fossils belonging to extinct lineages and to stem‐groups leading to modern lineages. While the monophyly of some groups is not systematically explored, our results have important implications for high‐level rodent relationships and systematics. These results are consistent with those of recent molecular phylogenies and reliably congruent with the stratigraphic record, thus enhancing the pertinence of dental characters for phylogenetic inference. Our approach provides evidence of a fundamental dichotomy in early rodent history. Two major clades have been identified: (1) the earliest ‘ctenodactyloid’ (Ctenodactylidae, Chapattimyidae, Yuomyidae, Diatomyidae) and hystricognathous (Tsaganomyidae, Baluchimyinae, ‘phiomorphs’, ‘caviomorphs’) rodents, and (2) the earliest ‘ischyromyoid’ rodents with their closest relatives (Muroidea + Dipodoidea + Geomyoidea + Anomaluroidea + Castoroidea + Sciuravidae + Gliroidea, and Sciuroidea + Aplodontoidea + Theridomorpha). This topology has led us to endorse Ctenohystrica as the first clade and propose a new taxon, Ischyromyiformes, for the second. Although minimized in our working hypothesis, the homoplasy in dental characters remains significant. However, a number of homoplasic characters reveal structuring in their internal distribution, allowing us to discern evolutionary morphological patterns, notably the pentalophodonty of molars, zygomasseteric complex and incisor enamel microstructure. © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2004, 142 , 105–134.  相似文献

Insect diversity represents about 60% of the estimated million‐and‐a‐half described eukaryotic species worldwide, yet comprehensive and well‐resolved intra‐ordinal phylogenies are still lacking for the majority of insect groups. This is the case especially for the most species‐rich insect group, the beetles (Coleoptera), a group for which less than 4% of the known species have had their DNA sequenced. In this study, we reconstruct the first higher level phylogeny based on DNA sequence data for the species‐rich darkling beetles, a family comprising at least 20 000 species. Although amongst all families of beetles Tenebrionidae ranks seventh in terms of species diversity, the lack of knowledge on the phylogeny and systematics of the group is such that its monophyly has been questioned (not to mention those of the subfamilies and tribes contained within it). We investigate the evolutionary history of Tenebrionidae using multiple phylogenetic inference methods (Bayesian inference, maximum likelihood and parsimony) to analyse a dataset consisting of eight gene fragments across 404 taxa (including 250 tenebrionid species). Although the resulting phylogenetic framework only encompasses a fraction of the known tenebrionid diversity, it provides important information on their systematics and evolution. Whatever the methods used, our results provide strong support for the monophyly of the family, and highlight the likely paraphyletic or polyphyletic nature of several important tenebrionid subfamilies and tribes, notably the polyphyletic subfamilies Diaperinae and Tenebrioninae that clearly require substantial revision in the future. Some interesting associations in several groups are also revealed by the phylogenetic analyses, such as the pairing of Aphtora Bates with Phrenapatinae. Furthermore this study advances our knowledge of the evolution of the group, providing novel insights into much‐debated theories, such as the apparent relict distribution of the tribe Elenophorini.  相似文献

Stable forested environments can be converted to savanna in response to changes in environmental disturbances. New Caledonia is a biodiversity hotspot; significant ecological and economic resources would be lost if forests were turned into savanna by anthropogenic environmental changes. On the landscape scale, systems that have undergone shifts of this kind are characterized by sharp forest–savanna boundaries and mosaic‐like distributions of savanna and forest. Understanding the locations and the dynamics of such boundaries is a challenge for ecologists and is critical for landscape management and biodiversity conservation. Using a time series of aerial photographs (1955–2000) and a forest habitat suitability map, we tested the hypothesis that topography and spatial processes, especially those relating to fire spread and seed dispersal, are the main determinants of the spatial distribution of rainforest and savanna in a New Caledonian landscape covering 24 km2. Within the studied landscape, the overall forest coverage decreased by 24% between 1976 and 2000. This was primarily due to the contraction of forests on west‐facing slopes, which accounted for about 90% of the total loss. Conversely, the east‐facing forests seemed to have contracted extensively prior to the studied period, and were confined to refuges. A habitat suitability index calculated from the landscape's topographical features using generalized additive models accurately predicted both the presence of forests and the probability of forest expansion/contraction. We also provide evidence that spatial processes such as fire spread and seed dispersal limit the expansion and contraction of forests. Our results suggest that rainforests on west‐facing slopes in New Caledonia will be progressively destroyed by fire until they are restricted to refuges along thalwegs and creeks, as appears to have already happened for their east‐facing counterparts.  相似文献

The genus Blaps is an emblematic group of large flightless beetles adapted to semi‐arid and arid environments. About 230 species have been described in the subgenus Blaps, which is the largest of the four extant subgenera. Within this subgenus, one large group of morphologically homogeneous species is of particular interest, and comprises the species formerly assigned to Seidlitz's division one. Strikingly, almost all species in this group are endemic to the Mediterranean basin, whereas the remaining Blaps species are mostly distributed in Asia. Here we present the first phylogenetic hypothesis for the Mediterranean Blaps and several taxonomic clarifications for the North African species belonging to this group. Based on careful examination of almost all type material and thousands of specimens for all known species and subspecies (initially 65 taxa), seven lectotypes are designated and six new synonymies are established: Blaps heydeni Allard, 1880 = Blaps heydenissp. taciturna Peyerimhoff syn.n. , Blaps emondi Solier = Blaps nitidula Solier syn.n. , Blaps tripolitanica Karsch = Blaps vialattei Peyerimhoff syn.n. , Blaps bifurcata strauchi Reiche = Blaps bifurcata ssp. gridellii Pierre syn.n. , Blaps cognata Solier = Blaps schweinfurhtii Seidlitz syn.n. and Blaps judaeorum Miller = Blaps pharao Seidlitz syn.n. Among the examined material, five species are also new for science and are assigned to extant species group. To infer species relationships, a morphological character matrix was assembled and analysed using both parsimony and probabilistic methods. All analyses yielded a similar and repeatable phylogenetic pattern, which allows us to discuss the systematics of the Mediterranean endemic species, the limit of extant species groups and to clarify the taxonomic status of several ambiguous taxa. We also reveal the existence of a large clade that encompasses the eastern Mediterranean species that are also mostly associated with arid regions. This clade is embedded within a second group that corresponds to western Mediterranean species, which are generally found in semi‐arid regions. Finally, we discuss the relevance of species groups in relation to their geographic distribution. This work represents a first step for further studies in taxonomy, systematics and historical biogeography of Blaps species.  相似文献

Female Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, aged 1 week, were infected with DEN-2 dengue virus. The kinetics of infection in mosquito brain and mesenteron were monitored using DNA probes with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of target DNA sequences coding for DEN-2 virus envelope protein, compared with the standard immunofluorescence assay technique (IFA). Rates of virus detection in the mesenteron of orally infected mosquitoes rose to 38% by day 4 post-inoculation, then declined until day 8, followed by irregular peaks around days 11-14 and subsequently. In mosquito head squashes, virus was detected from day 4 onwards, reaching 38% positive by day 18. Salivary glands of all the same females were found to be positive for virus by day 8 onwards. Parenterally infected Ae.albopictus females were all positive for DEN-2 in the brain and salivary glands 8 days post-inoculation. In every case, results obtained with the PCR matched those from the IFA. Our DNA probe with PCR procedure can therefore be utilized as a sensitive and reliable method for studies of DEN-2 vectors.  相似文献

Spring phenology in boreal Eurasia over a nearly century time scale   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
It has been widely reported that tree leaves have tended to appear earlier in many regions of the northern hemisphere in the last few decades, reflecting climate warming. Satellite observations revealed an 8-day advance in leaf appearance date between 1982 and 1991 in northern latitudes. In situ observations show that leaf appearance dates in Europe have advanced by an average of 6.3 days from 1959 to 1996. Modelling of leaf appearance on the basis of temperature also shows a marked advance in temperate and boreal regions from 1955 to 2002. However, before 1955, reported studies of phenological variations are restricted to local scale. Modelling, ground observations and satellite observations are here combined to analyse phenological variations in Eurasian taiga over nearly a century. The trend observed by remote sensing consists mainly in a shift at the end of the 1980s, reflecting a shift in winter and spring temperature. In western boreal Eurasia, a trend to earlier leaf appearance is evident since the mid-1930s, although it is discontinuous. In contrast, the strong advance in leaf appearance detected over Central Siberia using satellite data in 1982–1991 is strengthened by late springs in 1983–1984; moreover, in this region the green-up timing has displayed successive trends with opposite signs since 1920. Thus, such strong trend is not unusual if considered locally. However, the recent advance is unique in simultaneously affecting most of the Eurasian taiga, the leaf appearance dates after 1990 being the earliest in nearly a century in most of the area.  相似文献
