Although biological invasions are currently recognized as being especially severe on islands, little attention has been given to detecting parameters influencing this pattern. This study tested the common perceptions that uniparental reproductive modes are associated with invasive and/or island plant populations due to a lack of pollinator vectors and/or small initial population sizes, and that pollinator services and biparental seed production modes will subsequently be associated with adjacent mainland sites. Using controlled pollination and germination experiments on invasive Carpobrotus edulis and C.  aff. acinaciformis populations in both island and mainland habitats in south-east France, we found no evidence to support these hypotheses. All significant mean differences found between locations for reproductive indices describing uniparental reproductive modes were significantly smaller in island populations. In contrast, seedling sizes issuing from manual outcrossing and manual hybridization experiments, regardless of taxon, as well as C.  aff.  acinaciformis hybridization indices, were larger in island populations. The presence of significant, though limited, pollinator service was detected for all populations, and stressed the importance of such mutualisms. We suggest that invasive plant reproductive traits could be highly contextual, and that islands may have a potential role in the acceleration of the invasion process through the production of highly variable populations.  © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2005, 85 , 65–79.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Phenological shift in oviposition in seed predators may be a key factor for adaptive radiation if temporal differences lead to less intense competition. 2. This hypothesis was tested at two sites in the French Alps in three sympatric species of larch cone flies grouped into two phenological groups (early and late) differing in adult emergence and oviposition timing by approximately 2 weeks. The present study assessed the intensity of competition within and between groups by measuring four larval traits. Cone traits were measured, and the impact of early species parasitism on cone development was assessed. 3. The occupation of the central axis of a developing cone by one early larva has a strong detrimental effect on cone growth and seed production. However, there was almost no correlation between the variables measured on the cones and on the larvae, suggesting that the resources available were not limiting. 4. Inter‐group competition had no significant effect on early larvae. In contrast, both inter‐ and intra‐group competition had a significant negative effect on late larvae length (–11% and –16% respectively), dry mass (–8% and –23%), and lipid mass (–15% and –26%). The intensity of competition was stronger among larvae in the same phenological group, which is consistent with the hypothesis that shifts in oviposition promote adaptive radiation in larch cone flies by reducing competition among larvae.  相似文献

Identification of genes involved in local adaptation is particularly challenging for species functioning as a network of interconnected populations undergoing frequent extinctions–recolonizations, because populations are submitted to contrasted evolutionary pressures. Using amplified fragment length polymorphism markers, population genetic structure of the mosquito Aedes rusticus was analysed in five geographical areas of the French Rhône‐Alpes region. We included a number of sites that were treated with the bio‐insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) for more than 15 years. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that most of the genetic variability was found within populations (96%), with no significant variation among geographical areas, although variation among populations within areas (4%) was significant. The global genetic differentiation index FST was low (0.0366 ± 0.167). However, pairwise FST values were significant and no isolation‐by‐distance at the regional level was observed, suggesting a metapopulation structure in this species. Bti‐treatment had no effect on genetic structure and on within‐population genetic diversity. Potential signatures of positive selection associated with Bti‐treatment were detected for five loci, even though toxicological bioassays performed on field‐collected larvae showed no significant difference in mortality between Bti‐treated and nontreated sites. The difficulty of detecting moderate resistance in field‐collected larvae together with possible differential persistence of toxins in the environment may explain our inability to detect a toxicological response to Bti in treated sites. The evidence for positive selection occurring at several genomic regions suggests a first step towards Bti resistance in natural mosquito populations treated with this bio‐insecticide. Furthermore, this signal was detectable using genomic tools before any toxicological evidence for resistance could be identified.  相似文献

Common gardens were established along a ~900 km latitudinal transect to examine factors limiting geographical distributions of boreal and temperate tree species in eastern North America. Boreal representatives were trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) and paper birch (Betula papyrifera Marsh.), while temperate species were eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr ex. Marsh var. deltoides) and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.). The species were compared with respect to adjustments of leaf photosynthetic metabolism along the transect, with emphasis on temperature sensitivities of the maximum rate of ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP) carboxylation (EV) and regeneration (EJ). During leaf development, the average air temperature (Tgrowth) differed between the coolest and warmest gardens by 12 °C. Evidence of photosynthetic thermal acclimation (metabolic shifts compensating for differences in Tgrowth) was generally lacking in all species. Namely, neither EV nor EJ was positively related to Tgrowth. Correspondingly, the optimum temperature (Topt) of ambient photosynthesis (Asat) did not vary significantly with Tgrowth. Modest variation in Topt was explained by the combination of EV plus the slope and curvature of the parabolic temperature response of mesophyll conductance (gm). All in all, species differed little in photosynthetic responses to climate. Furthermore, the adaptive importance of photosynthetic thermal acclimation was overshadowed by gm's influence on Asat's temperature response.  相似文献

Understanding the effects of climate on avian life history traits is essential if we wish to predict the demographic consequences of expected climatic changes. We investigated the influence of weather conditions on the reproductive success of Rock Ptarmigan Lagopus muta in the eastern French Pyrenees, one of the southernmost areas inhabited by the species. Reproductive success was estimated in early August between 1997 and 2006 by counting adults and well-grown chicks with pointing dogs. The number of young per adult varied from 0.08 to 0.72. Using Poisson regression and Akaike's information criterion, we selected the best model explaining the effect of weather (date of snowmelt and, for both laying/incubation and post-hatching periods, mean minimum and maximum temperatures, monthly rainfall and number of days with rain) on the proportion of young in August. Reproductive success was positively associated with early appearance of snow-free ground, and date of snowmelt alone was the model that best explained annual variation in reproductive success. Other models, which included a negative effect of rainfall, particularly after hatching, also had some support. Hence, both pre-laying and post-hatching weather conditions influenced reproductive success of Rock Ptarmigan in the eastern French Pyrenees. On a continental scale, reproductive success of alpine populations of Rock Ptarmigan is consistently lower than that of northern populations. This difference in productivity may be partly correlated with climatic conditions observed along an arctic–alpine gradient, the amount and variation of rainfall being greater in southern alpine areas than elsewhere in the species' range.  相似文献

The status of the tropical African latrine blowfly Chrysomya putoria (Wiedemann, 1830) is recognized as distinct from the sub-tropical African blowfly C.chloropyga (Wiedemann, 1818) (Diptera: Calliphoridae). The biology of C.putoria in laboratory culture is described briefly with emphasis on the differences in development found in three strains of this species from Tanzania, Liberia and Brazil. All three strains were reproductively compatible and there was no evidence of F1 hybrid sterility or hybrid breakdown in subsequent generations. Larval development was significantly faster in the Brazilian strain than in the strain from Tanzania. Sexual maturity was significantly faster in adults of the Liberian and Brazilian strains compared to that found in the strain from Tanzania. This latter strain was affected by the source of protein available as adult food. These differences between strains did not appear to be due to selection in laboratory culture, but rather evidence of the evolution of physiological divergence within a species occupying different geographical regions.  相似文献

Summary. The frog neuromuscular junction is sensitive to nitric oxide (NO), since exogenously applied NO reduces the release of transmitter by presynaptic terminals and the size of ATP-induced Ca2+ responses in perisynaptic Schwann cells. This study aimed at determining whether an NO synthase (NOS) is present at the neuromuscular junction, notably in perisynaptic Schwann cells, the glial cells at this synapse. The NADPH-diaphorase (NADPH-d) histochemical technique revealed the presence of NOS in cell bodies and presumed processes of perisynaptic Schwann cells. Incubation with NOS inhibitors, NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester or NG-monomethyl-L-arginine-acetate, abolished the NADPH-d staining. Moreover, L-arginine, the precursor of NO, impeded the blockade by NOS inhibitors, establishing the NOS specificity of NADPH-d staining in frog tissue. The pattern of labelling with a polyclonal antibody against the neuronal form of NOS was similar to the NADPH-d staining, also suggesting the presence of a neuronal NOS in perisynaptic Schwann cells. Using electron microscopy, the NOS immunostaining was found at the membrane and occasionally in the cytoplasm of perisynaptic Schwann cells and was not detected in the nerve terminal or muscle. There was no enzymatic or immunocytochemical labelling of NOS 6 days after denervation. It is concluded that NOS is present in frog perisynaptic Schwann cells. The presence of this endogenous NOS suggests that NO may act as a diffusible glial messenger to modulate synaptic activity and synapse formation at the neuromuscular junction.  相似文献
