Evolutionary transitions to dim-light foraging (predawn matinal, crepuscular, nocturnal) have occurred repeatedly in bees, and may be associated with an escape from enemies or competitors. To date, however, little information has been available to test these hypotheses. Here we provide the first detailed information on the nesting behaviour of two species of Neotropical, nocturnal sweat bees, Megalopta genalis and M. ecuadoria (Hymenoptera: Halictidae). Females are facultatively social or solitary, and construct nests in dead wood. Nocturnal foraging behaviour is bimodal. Bees began foraging after sunset (∼18:30 h) and ceased foraging approximately 1 h later even though nocturnal flowers with pollen were still abundant; a second foraging bout occurred in the predawn morning, which began at ∼04:45 h and ended around sunrise (∼06:15 h) when diurnal-blooming flowers were abundant. Bees are capable of controlled flight in full light. They utilized pollen from both canopy and understory plant species, which have diurnal or nocturnal pollen anthesis. Megalopta nests are attacked by generalist predators such as ants, as well as the endoparasitic fly Melaloncha sp. nov. (Phoridae), the beetle Macrosaigon gracilis (Rhipophoridae), the parasitic wasp Lophostigma cincta (Mutillidae), and the brood parasite Megalopta byroni (Halictidae). Hydraulic architecture was studied in shrub species differing in rooting depth in a cold desert in Southern Argentina. All species exhibited strong hydraulic segmentation between leaves, stems and roots with leaves being the most vulnerable part of the hydraulic pathway. Two types of safety margins describing the degree of conservation of the hydraulic integrity were used: the difference between minimum stem or leaf water potential (Ψ) and the Ψ at which stem or leaf hydraulic function was reduced by 50% (Ψ – Ψ50), and the difference between leaf and stem Ψ50. Leaf Ψ50 – stem Ψ50 increased with decreasing rooting depth. Large diurnal decreases in root‐specific hydraulic conductivity suggested high root vulnerability to embolism across all species. Although stem Ψ50 became more negative with decreasing species‐specific Ψsoil and minimum stem Ψ, leaf Ψ50 was independent of Ψ and minimum leaf Ψ. Species with embolism‐resistant stems also had higher maximum stem hydraulic conductivity. Safety margins for stems were >2.1 MPa, whereas those for leaves were negative or only slightly positive. Leaves acted as safety valves to protect the integrity of the upstream hydraulic pathway, whereas embolism in lateral roots may help to decouple portions of the plant from the impact of drier soil layers. 相似文献

Mathematical modeling is a potent in silico tool that can help investigate, interpret, and predict the behavior of biological systems. The first step is to develop a working hypothesis of the biology. Then by “translating” the biological phenomena into equations, models can harness the power of mathematical analysis techniques to explore the dynamics and interactions of the biological components. Models can be used together with traditional experimental models to help design new experiments, test hypotheses, identify mechanisms, and predict outcomes. This article reviews the process of building, calibrating, and using mathematical models in the context of the kinetics of receptor and signal transduction biology. An example model related to the androgen receptor-mediated regulation of the prostate is presented to illustrate the steps in the modeling process and to highlight the potential for mathematical modeling in this area. 相似文献

由于长期连作障碍、不合理连续施用化肥等因素,植烟土壤存在酸化等问题,导致烟草青枯病等愈发严重.土壤酸化改良剂可以改善土壤酸化状况,同时还具有改善土壤物理结构、提高养分利用率、增强土壤酸碱缓冲能力等多项作用.本研究选取3种土壤酸化改良剂,用起垄条施的方式,以长期植烟酸化烟田为研究对象,评估不同处理对土壤pH值调节、烟草生长及青枯病发生的影响.结果表明,草木灰粉剂、草木灰颗粒剂处理对烟株生长有一定的促进作用;草木灰粉剂、草木灰颗粒剂和牡蛎壳粉处理后20d,三者土壤pH值分别较空白对照提高了0.40、0.63和0.40,草木灰颗粒剂对酸化土壤的改良效果最好;处理后60d,三者土壤pH值分别较空白对照提高了0.42、0.30和0.08,草木灰粉剂对酸化土壤的改良效果最好;基于烟草青枯病的病情指数AUDPC计算,从小到大依次为草木灰粉剂、草木灰颗粒剂、牡蛎壳粉、空白对照,草木灰粉剂和草木灰颗粒剂处理对烟草青枯病整个时期的防控效果分别为69.35%和28.43%.结合调酸效果、农艺性状和对青枯病的防效等指标综合分析,土壤酸化改良剂草木灰粉剂起垄条施的效果最优,可为今后在酸化烟田大面积运用调酸技术防控烟草青枯病提供理论基础和技术支撑. 相似文献

Abstract 1. Many Salicaceae species naturally form hybrid swarms with parental and hybrid taxa that differ in secondary chemical profile and in resistance to herbivores. Theoretically, the differential mortality in the seedling stage can lead to changes in trait expression and alter subsequent interactions between plants and herbivores. This study examines whether herbivory by the generalist slug Arion subfuscus, which causes extensive mortality in young willow seedlings, causes shifts in (a) the foliar chemistry of F2 willow hybrids (Salix sericea and Salix eriocephala), and (b) the subsequent susceptibility to Japanese Beetles, Popillia japonica. 2. In 2001, two populations of F2 seedlings were generated: those that survived slug herbivory (80–90% of seedlings placed in the field were killed by the slugs) were designated as S-plants, whereas C-plants (controls) experienced no mortality. 3. Common garden experiments with cuttings from these populations, in 2001 and 2002, revealed extensive variation in the phenolic chemistry of F2 hybrids, but revealed no significant difference between S- and C-plants, although the levels of foliar nutrients, proteins and nitrogen tended to be higher in S-plants. 4. Concentrations of salicortin and 2′-cinnamoylsalicortin explained 55 and 38% of the the variation in leaf damage caused by Japanese beetles, and secondary chemistry was highly correlated within replicate clones (salicortin R2= 0.85, 2-cinnamoylsalicortin R2= 0.77, condensed tannins R2= 0.68). 5. Interestingly, Japanese beetle damage and condensed tannins were positively correlated within the S-plants, but not in the C-plants, suggesting that slugs had selected for plants with a positive relationship between tannins and P. japonica damage. This is unlikely to be a consequence of a preference for tannins, but is suggested to be related to the elevated nutrient levels in the S-plants, perhaps in combination with the complex-binding properties of tannins. 6. The damage was highly correlated within replicate clones and a model choice analysis suggested that Japanese beetle damage may be explained by four factors: concentrations of salicortin, condensed tannins, and nitrogen, as well as the specific leaf area (thick leaves were damaged less). 相似文献
