Abstract: During 2 years of radiotelemetry research on chukars (Alectoris chukar) in western Utah, USA, we found 28% of retrieved radios (n = 78) in rubbish nests of woodrats (Neotoma spp.). Such movement and disturbance of carcasses and radios by woodrats and other species has implications for radiotelemetry studies. We evaluated spatio-temporal movement of 51 radiocollars attached to chukar carcasses in western Utah. Most (80%) carcasses were scavenged within one week and by the end of 3 weeks 25 (50%) had been retrieved from woodrat middens. Scavenging activity can both obscure important clues needed to identify causes of mortality and bias telemetry studies by delaying onset of mortality signals.  相似文献

Abstract. The taxonomic and genetic relationships between P.machaon rathjensi Warnecke from the west side of southern Arabia and P.machaon muetingi Seyer from the east are discussed, together with suggestions of their relationship to P.machaon saharae Oberthiir from the northern Hejaz, Sinai and desert North Africa. It is concluded that though P.m.rathjensi and P.m.saharae are subspecifically distinct, they are very closely related to each other, and both should be regarded as specifically distinct from the rest of the machaon complex.
The remainder of the machaon complex in its turn presents a somewhat similar problem. Thus P.machaon gorganus Fruhstorfer and P.hospiton Géné are normally regarded as good species, but Fl caterpillars have been found in the wild and the cross can be readily produced in captivity with no upset in the sex ratio. Furthermore, recently we have obtained sparse F2 offspring between the two species.
We therefore suggest that the entire P.machaon complex is in a labile state as regards speciation throughout its range and the relationships between the various forms are not easily expressed through the traditional species and subspecies concepts. Our tentative conclusions are that the status of P.machaon and P.hospiton as distinct species probably remains valid. The saharaelrathjensi complex might be considered distinct from P.machaon using the biological species concept, while their genetics indicate a more conservative approach. However, more important than the exact status of the taxa in question is the fact that the P.machaon complex illustrates evoluton in action, the end result of which cannot be predicted.  相似文献

Field‐scale experiments simulating realistic future climate scenarios are important tools for investigating the effects of current and future climate changes on ecosystem functioning and biogeochemical cycling. We exposed a seminatural Danish heathland ecosystem to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), warming, and extended summer drought in all combinations. Here, we report on the short‐term responses of the nitrogen (N) cycle after 2 years of treatments. Elevated CO2 significantly affected aboveground stoichiometry by increasing the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratios in the leaves of both co‐dominant species (Calluna vulgaris and Deschampsia flexuosa), as well as the C/N ratios of Calluna flowers and by reducing the N concentration of Deschampsia litter. Belowground, elevated CO2 had only minor effects, whereas warming increased N turnover, as indicated by increased rates of microbial NH4+ consumption, gross mineralization, potential nitrification, denitrification and N2O emissions. Drought reduced belowground gross N mineralization and decreased fauna N mass and fauna N mineralization. Leaching was unaffected by treatments but was significantly higher across all treatments in the second year than in the much drier first year indicating that ecosystem N loss is highly sensitive to changes and variability in amount and timing of precipitation. Interactions between treatments were common and although some synergistic effects were observed, antagonism dominated the interactive responses in treatment combinations, i.e. responses were smaller in combinations than in single treatments. Nonetheless, increased C/N ratios of photosynthetic tissue in response to elevated CO2, as well as drought‐induced decreases in litter N production and fauna N mineralization prevailed in the full treatment combination. Overall, the simulated future climate scenario therefore lead to reduced N turnover, which could act to reduce the potential growth response of plants to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration.  相似文献

Competition in plant communities is often a contentious issue because the mechanisms of competitive interactions are not obvious. We sought evidence that Proteaceae communities are competing along two leaf niche axes as observed in a previous study. Two functional characters, leaf size and leaf shape were measured on numerous individuals per species per plot of six communities from two different regions. Patterns of overdispersion along these leaf trait axes between species were observed, similar to the earlier study. The observed results were compared with the patterns expected under a null model using standard and novel indices to test the significance of trait dispersion between species within a plot. Competition and niche differentiation in the observed plots were not supported as the observed trait overlaps were not significantly different from the null expectation. Our results do not support the theory that Proteaceae communities compete along the two proposed functional leaf traits.  相似文献

1. Anthropogenic activities can increase fine sediment supply to streams over multiple spatial and temporal extents. Identifying the processes responsible, and the scale at which any effects on stream organisms become evident, are key management needs, but appropriately scaled surveys are surprisingly few. 2. We surveyed macroinvertebrates and superficial fine sediments at two spatial resolutions (reach‐ and patch‐scale) in tributaries of the River Usk, a temperate, montane catchment in rural Wales (U.K.). Land use, habitat and geomorphological character were measured on‐site or derived from an existing database (=Fluvial Audit). We aimed to identify: (i) how in‐stream sediments varied with land use and associated geomorphology; (ii) likely consequences for macroinvertebrates and (iii) any scale‐dependence in relationships between macroinvertebrates and sediment character. 3. At both the reach‐ and patch‐scales, bed cover by fine sediment was related directly to the extent of eroding banks 500 m upstream. In turn, sedimentation and bank erosion were negatively correlated with catchment or riparian woodland extent. 4. At the reach scale, macroinvertebrate composition varied with catchment land use and stream chemistry, with richness declining as rough grazing or woodland was replaced by improved grassland. There was no response to deposited sediment except for weak increase in the relative abundance of oligochaetes. 5. By contrast, at the patch scale, fine sediments were accompanied by pronounced changes in invertebrate composition, and we ranked the 27 most common taxa according to their apparent sediment tolerance. General estimating equations showed that total and Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera richness decreased significantly by 20% and 25% at the most sediment impacted sites (30% cover) by comparison with sediment‐free sites. 6. We conclude that sediment deposition in the upper Usk system mostly reflects local bank erosion, with riparian woodland likely to mediate this process through bank stability. Fine sediment release had marked ecological effects, but these were detectable only at patch‐to‐patch scales. We suggest that investigation of localized sediment release in streams will benefit from scale‐dependent or scale‐specific sampling, and some effects could go undetected unless sample resolution is selected carefully.  相似文献

Estimates of carbon leaching losses from different land use systems are few and their contribution to the net ecosystem carbon balance is uncertain. We investigated leaching of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), and dissolved methane (CH4), at forests, grasslands, and croplands across Europe. Biogenic contributions to DIC were estimated by means of its δ13C signature. Leaching of biogenic DIC was 8.3±4.9 g m?2 yr?1 for forests, 24.1±7.2 g m?2 yr?1 for grasslands, and 14.6±4.8 g m?2 yr?1 for croplands. DOC leaching equalled 3.5±1.3 g m?2 yr?1 for forests, 5.3±2.0 g m?2 yr?1 for grasslands, and 4.1±1.3 g m?2 yr?1 for croplands. The average flux of total biogenic carbon across land use systems was 19.4±4.0 g C m?2 yr?1. Production of DOC in topsoils was positively related to their C/N ratio and DOC retention in subsoils was inversely related to the ratio of organic carbon to iron plus aluminium (hydr)oxides. Partial pressures of CO2 in soil air and soil pH determined DIC concentrations and fluxes, but soil solutions were often supersaturated with DIC relative to soil air CO2. Leaching losses of biogenic carbon (DOC plus biogenic DIC) from grasslands equalled 5–98% (median: 22%) of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) plus carbon inputs with fertilization minus carbon removal with harvest. Carbon leaching increased the net losses from cropland soils by 24–105% (median: 25%). For the majority of forest sites, leaching hardly affected actual net ecosystem carbon balances because of the small solubility of CO2 in acidic forest soil solutions and large NEE. Leaching of CH4 proved to be insignificant compared with other fluxes of carbon. Overall, our results show that leaching losses are particularly important for the carbon balance of agricultural systems.  相似文献

1. A comparative study of species diversity and assemblage patterns of herbaceous ground‐flora communities in riparian areas was performed along natural mid‐sized lowland streams and their channelised counterparts. The areas had open vegetation and were positioned along 18 similar‐sized third to fourth order stream reaches. 2. Alpha diversity was significantly higher along natural streams both at the sample plot and reach scale. Sample plot diversity peaked at intermediate distance from the natural stream reaches, whereas it increased with increasing distance from the channelised reaches. Both gamma diversity, measured and estimated from species‐area curves, and beta diversity, which is a measure of the change in diversity between areas, was similar along the two types of streams. 3. Alpha diversity correlated with several of the measured and calibrated environmental variables. The positive correlation between bank slope and alpha diversity indicates that flooding plays a key role in maintaining high levels of diversity along natural streams. 4. Species composition varied significantly between the two stream types. A cluster analysis identified four clusters of which two clusters (one and three) primarily included species associated with sample plots in areas along natural streams. Most cluster one and three species were also identified as indicator species for this stream type. 5. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that cluster one species were less productive species associated with high total soil carbon and nitrogen contents, whereas cluster three species were highly productive species associated with high soil moisture levels, probably partly resulting from flooding. Our results suggest that distance from the stream channel imposes a probabilistic gradient that sustains co‐occurrence of these two communities in riparian areas along natural mid‐sized lowland streams.  相似文献

Previously inverted Lepidium roots were placed in a horizontal position and the amyloplasts in the statocytes of the root cap allowed to fall through their entire range of movement across the cell. Under these conditions the amyloplasts first follow a mainly downward course for 6 to 8 min at a speed between 0.5 and 0.8 μm per min. For the next 10 min they move slightly more slowly in a direction away from the apical end of the cell, still sinking somewhat, but without reaching the plasmalemma along the lower wall. Previous experiments have shown that conditions assumed to allow the amyloplasts to slide parallel to the longitudinal cell walls are those that give rise to the largest geotropic curvatures. Such conditions are for instance (1) stimulation at 135° (root tips pointing obliquely upward) and (2) inversion of roots for 16 min followed by stimulation at 45°. Treatments assumed not to permit extensive sliding of the amyloplasts produce smaller geotropic curvatures, namely (3) stimulation at 45° without pre-inversion and (4) inversion followed by stimulation at 135°. The location of the amyloplasts after these four kinds of treatment has now been determined on photomicrographs and the assumptions concerning the paths and extent of sliding of the amyloplasts confirmed. Observations on electron micrographs showed that under all conditions the amyloplasts are separated from the plasmalemma by other organelles, such as ER, nucleus or vacuoles. In roots rotated for 15 min parallel to the horizontal axis of the klinostat at 2 rpm, the amyloplasts are not clumped together as densely as in normal, inverted or stimulated roots, but they are not scattered over the entire cell volume. The statolith function of the amyloplasts is discussed in view of these and other observations.  相似文献

Although many insect species are now thought to travel hundreds and even thousands of kilometres on the wind (Pedgley, 1982) only a few are butterflies. Three species for which there is reasonably convincing but circumstantial evidence are Danaus plexippus L. from the U.S.A. to the British Isles (Hurst, 1969), Hypolimnas bolina nerina (F.) from Australia to New Zealand (Tomlinson, 1973) and Nymphalis antiopa L. from northern Europe to the British Isles (Chalmers-Hunt, 1977). In this paper we describe the sudden appearance of Indian butterflies in Arabia and provide evidence that they were windborne across the Arabian Sea.  相似文献
