Zinc, copper, and iron aggregate Aβ and accumulate in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) plaques. Some metals are increased in AD vs. control serum. The authors examined levels of 12 metals in serum of 44 AD and 41 control subjects. Zinc decreased from 12.3 to 10.9 μmol/L (means, p = 0.0007). Arsenic positively correlated with Mini-Mental State Examination score (p < 0.0001). Zinc deposition in brain amyloid might deplete zinc from other body compartments, such as serum. The arsenic correlation might be caused by the major contribution of seafood consumption to intake of both arsenic and docosahexaenoic acid, of which the latter may delay AD.  相似文献

Geographic pattern of dengue fever is changing due to the global environmental and climate changes in the 21st century. Evidence of community’s knowledge, mosquito bite patterns and protective behavior practices in non-endemic regions is limited. This study examined the knowledge of dengue, mosquito bite patterns, protective behavior practices and their associated factors in Hong Kong, a non-endemic subtropical city. A population-based random telephone survey (n = 590) was conducted three weeks after the government announcement of a local dengue outbreak in August 2018. Sociodemographic status, awareness, knowledge, protective measures, bite patterns of mosquito were collected. Results indicated high level of community awareness of the local outbreak (95.2%), symptom identification (84.0%) and adoption of at least one mosquito protective measures (nearly 80%). About 40% of respondents reported that they were bitten by mosquitoes during the study period, a high mosquito season in Hong Kong. Mosquito bites were prevalent near grassy area (63.4%), at home (42.6%) and at public transportation waiting spots (39.6%). Younger people (< 25 years old), female, those who lived on lower floors (≤the 6th) and near grassy area were at higher risk of mosquito bites at home. Respondents perceived higher threat of dengue to society were more likely to practice mosquito prevention. While residential factors affected their indoor prevention, other socio-demographic factors affected the outdoor prevention. Practicing prevention behaviors were associated with self-reported mosquito bite at home. Furthermore, the general prevention uptake rate unchanged after the announcement of local dengue outbreak. Although the uptake rate of protective measures during August was high, 40% participants reported they were bitten. Also public locations are more common area for bites, which suggested stronger mosquito prevention and control on public environments and more personal protective behaviors should be advocated.  相似文献

The HLA-DQ region contains highly polymorphic alpha and beta loci, so that a diverse set of cis- and trans-associated class II alpha/beta dimers are potentially generated in heterozygous individuals. To evaluate the extent of this predicted diversity, DQ2 beta or DQ3.2 beta cDNA were introduced into a panel of homozygous B cell lines that expressed different DQ alpha alleles. Restricted patterns of alpha/beta pairing were observed in which DQ2 beta and DQ3 beta molecules were unable to pair efficiently with DQ1 alpha chains. This pairing anomaly may contribute to altered class II phenotypes in heterozygous individuals, and is reflected in the absence of either DQ1 alpha, DQ2 beta or DQ1 alpha, DQ3 beta haplotypes in the known human gene pool.  相似文献

The presence of locustatachykinin (LomTK)-like immunoreactivity is demonstrated in the central nervous system (CNS) of Locusta migratoria with the use of a polyclonal antiserum raised against LomTK1. By developing a radioimmunoassay with the same antiserum, we have demonstrated picomolar amounts of LomTK-like material in the tissues of the central nervous system. In contrast, only femptomolar amounts of LomTK-like material are associated with the oviduct tissue. The relative amounts of the different LomTK isoforms in the brain and the abdominal ganglionic chain were examined by separating the native peptides on high-performance liquid chromatography and comparing their retention times to synthetic LomTK standards. The amounts of the different isoforms of LomTK differed between and within the two regions of the central nervous system. However, the ratios of the different isoform amounts were similar between the two regions. The myostimulatory activities of LomTKs 1 to 4 were characterized by using the locust oviduct bioassay. LomTKs 1, 2, and 3 appeared to be more efficacious than LomTK4.  相似文献

Solid-state nanopores have emerged as a versatile tool for the characterization of single biomolecules such as nucleic acids and proteins1. However, the creation of a nanopore in a thin insulating membrane remains challenging. Fabrication methods involving specialized focused electron beam systems can produce well-defined nanopores, but yield of reliable and low-noise nanopores in commercially available membranes remains low2,3 and size control is nontrivial4,5. Here, the application of high electric fields to fine-tune the size of the nanopore while ensuring optimal low-noise performance is demonstrated. These short pulses of high electric field are used to produce a pristine electrical signal and allow for enlarging of nanopores with subnanometer precision upon prolonged exposure. This method is performed in situ in an aqueous environment using standard laboratory equipment, improving the yield and reproducibility of solid-state nanopore fabrication.  相似文献

An experimental procedure and method of analysis are presented for calibration of a thin-beam force transducer. The beam transducer can be produced and calibrated with a minimum coefficient of 10 ng (10(-5) dyne) force per micron (10(-4) cm) deflection, i.e., kB approximately 0.1 dyne/cm. Since beam deflections on the order of 0.1 micron can be detected, forces of a few nanograms can be resolved. Such forces are common in mechanical experiments on microscopic bodies, e.g., biological cells, artificial membrane capsules, droplets, etc.  相似文献
