In an urban population with widespread birth control practice the distribution of the number of pregnancies, births and abortions was studied in a cohort of women of completed fertility. The mean number of pregnancies per woman was 4.03 +/- 0.08 (sigma = = 2.98); the mean number of births - 1.12 +/- 0.02 (sigma = 0.77). 7.4% of women which had completed their reproductive performance had no pregnancies and 19.5% - no births. The Crow's Index of the Opportunity for Selection and its components connected with differential fertility and differential mortality were estimated. In the population under study two components of selection - selection at the prenatal stages and selection associated with infertility - are shown to be still significant. Such type of selection is exemplified by investigation of couples suffering from repeated spontaneous abortions. 相似文献

The capacity of dried Klebsiella cell-free vaccine, obtained from strain No. 204 by the disintegration of microbial cells with hydroxylamine, for protecting mice from Klebsiella septic infection caused by the homologous serovar and 9 heterologous serovars of K. pneumoniae was studied. The newly developed preparation was found capable of stimulating immunity not only to the homologous K. pneumoniae serovar, but also to other K. pneumoniae heterologous serovars: K1, K9, K11, K16, K20, K61. The protective capacity of the preparation with respect to these serovars was not inferior to that of the vaccines prepared by the same method from the corresponding homologous strains. The capacity of the vaccine to protect mice from Klebsiella sepsis was manifested irrespective of the virulence of the strains used for challenge. 相似文献

Crow's indices of the opportunity for selection and their components connected with differential mortality (Im) and differential fertility (If) were estimated for populations of Soviet Union republics and for a number of USSR ethnic groups on the basis of demographic statistics. More than 10-fold decrease in the Im value was revealed in the total population of the USSR during 1926-1987. At present, the Im values in republics vary from 0.020 to 0.094 for urban population and from 0.030 to 0.121 in rural population, the ratio of perinatal mortality in the whole structure of prereproductive mortality being higher in the republics with lower values of the Im. The range of the If values for different peoples (0.148-0.643) is wider than for the populations of the republics (0.326-0.578). Interethnic differences contribute 47% of the variance in fertility. The structure of Crow's indices is given for urban and rural populations of the republics. Genetic implications of the data presented are discussed with respect to possible manifestation of the effects of inter-group selection. 相似文献

The experimental study of the immunostimulating activity of therapeutic bacterial polycomponent vaccine VP-4 and prophylactic vaccine grippol, introduced both separately and in combination, on mice infected with Salmonella typhimurium, used as a model. Both preparations were found to produce an immunomodulating effect. The combined subcutaneous injection of VP-4 and grippol did not decrease their immunostimulating activity, but their separate administration at an interval of 14 days resulted in essential decrease in the protective activity of each of these two preparations. As shown on the model of Klebsiella infection in mice, challenged 4 weeks after immunization, VP-4 ensured the survival of 78.6% of mice, while after the injection of grippol their survival rate was not different from that of the group of intact animals. The evaluation of the immunostimulating activity of these preparations under the conditions of the prophylaxis of influenza and acute respiratory infections in organized groups of children revealed that the use of VP-4 alone or grippol in combination with VP-4 considerably decreased the number of secondary bacterial complications in children. 相似文献

After exposure of cells of the methylotrophic yeast Hansenula polymorphaHF246leu1-1 to N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine, a collection of 227 mutants unable to grow on methanol at elevated temperature (45°C) was obtained. Ninety four ts mutants (35% of the total number of mutants), which were unable to grow on methanol only at 45°C but could grow at optimal temperature (37°C), were isolated. Complementation analysis of mutants using 12 deletion mutants for genes of peroxisome biogenesis (PEX) (available in this yeast species by the beginning of our work) allowed to assign 51 mutants (including 16 ts) to the separate group of mutants unable to complement deletion mutants with defects in eight PEX genes. These mutants were classified into three groups: group 1 contained 10pex10 mutants (4ts mutants among them); group 2 included 19 mutants that failed to complement otherpex testers: 1 pex1; 2 pex4(1ts); 6 pex5(5ts); 3 pex8; 1 pex13; 6 (3ts) pex19; group 3 contained 22 multiple mutants. In mutants of group 3, hybrids with several testers do not grow on methanol. All mutants (51) carried recessive mutations, except for mutant 108, in which the mutation was dominant only at 30°C, which suggests that it is ts-dominant. Recombination analysis of mutants belonging to group 2 revealed that only five mutants (two pex5 and three pex8) carried mutations for the corresponding PEX genes. Analysis of the spore population from the hybrids of remaining 14 mutants with the pex tester demonstrated the presence of methanol-utilizing segregants, which indicates mutation localization in other genes. In 19 mutants, random analysis of ascospores from hybrids obtained upon crossing mutants of group 3 with a strain lacking peroxisomal disorders (ade11) revealed a single mutation causing the appearance of a multiple phenotype. A more detailed study of two mutants from this group allowed us to localize this mutation in the only PEX gene (PEX1 or PEX2). The effect of external magnetic field (direct and alternating) on the targeted delivery and distribution in body tissues of experimental animals of anesthetics (novocain, lidocaine, and trimecaine) immobilized on highly dispersed ferromagnetics with biocompatible coating was studied by the method of emission spectral analysis. The results are compared with the results obtained earlier on highly dispersed iron powders with dextran coating. Recently an association between a genetic variation in TRAF1/C5 and mortality from sepsis or cancer was found in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The most prevalent cause of death, cardiovascular disease, may have been missed in that study, since patients were enrolled at an advanced disease stage. Therefore, we used an inception cohort of RA patients to investigate the association between TRAF1/C5 and cardiovascular mortality, and replicate the findings on all-cause mortality. Intervention with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) represents a promising therapeutic tool in treatment-refractory autoimmune
diseases. A new report by Schurgers and colleagues in a previous issue of Arthritis Research & Therapy sheds novel mechanistic insight into the pathways employed by MSCs to suppress T-cell proliferation in vitro, but, at the same time, indicates that MSCs do not influence T-cell reactivity and the disease course in an in vivo arthritis model.
