Aromatization of norethindrone to ethynylestradiol in human adult liver [Poster 41]

Homogenates of human adult liver are capable of aromatizing norethindrone (17-ethynyl-19-nortestosterone) to ethynylestradiol (17-ethynylestradiol). The evidence of ethynylestradiol formation was obtained using a Bio-Rad AG1-X2 column, thin-layer chromatography and co-crystallization.     

Fine structural and histochemical study of lingual taste organs of Rana catesbeiana (Anura: Ranidae) transplanted to liver

Autologous tongues were transplanted onto the liver of the anuran Rana catesbeiana, specimens of which were sacrificed at intervals from 6 hr to 5 months after transplantation. Light and electron microscopy as well as histochemistry disclose that the grafts start to organize into cysts after 14 days. The taste organs occur in all grafts irrespective of the age of the graft. All surviving taste organs exhibit intense adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity and contain fluorescent basal cells of the usual type. Ultrastructurally, the taste organs are composed of three distinct types of cells that lack nerves. The taste and basal cells retain the characteristic dense-core granules in their cytoplasm through the experimental periods. The present results suggested that the taste organs of Rana can survive ectopically in the liver for up to 5 months.     

Differentiation of mitochondrial DNA types inMacaca fascicularis

Restriction fragment length polymorphism in the mitochondrial DNA ofMacaca fascicularis from four geographical regions, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indochina, was analyzed. In total, 21 types of mitochondrial DNA were detected using five restriction enzymes. These types were divided into two main groups based on phylogenetic analyses, one of which corresponded to the types of continental (Malaysia/Indochina) populations and the other to the types of a insular (Philippine) population. The types in the Indonesian population belonged to both groups. In the phylogenetic tree for the four populations, two clusters were constructed, one for the continental populations and the other for the insular ones.     

Age-related changes of immunoglobulin levels in African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops)

Serum IgG, IgA, and IgM levels were measured in domestically bred African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) ranging in age from 0 day to 49 months as well as in adult (5 years or older) animals of wild origin. Transplacental transfer of IgG was observed. IgG, IgA, and IgM levels increased with increasing age except for a temporal decrease of IgG level in the first month of life.     

Effects of 22K or 20K human growth hormone on lipolysis, leptin production in adipocytes in the presence and absence of human growth hormone binding protein.

OBJECTIVE AND METHOD: We studied the effects of human growth hormone (hGH) on leptin production and lipolysis stimulation in the presence or absence of human growth hormone binding protein (hGHBP) using 3T3- L1-hGHR adipocytes which efficiently express human growth hormone receptor. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: It was clarified that (1) hGH decreases leptin secretion after hGH-induced lipolysis stimulation, and (2) the reduction of leptin production and lipolysis stimulation by 22K hGH was attenuated with hGHBP, whereas that by 20K hGH, which is a naturally occurring isoform of 22K hGH, was not affected with hGHBP.
