On “intercolonial” cannibalism in Japanese paper wasps,Polistes chinensis antennalis Pérez andP. Jadwigae dalla torre (hymenoptera: Vespidae)

Summary Foundresses of two species of Japanese paper wasps,Polistes chinensis antennalis andP. jadwigae, attacked other colonies of the same species. A foundress ofP. chinensis antennalis visited two nests of the same species, and ate larvae from them, while two foundresses ofP. jadwigae each visited a nest of the same species, eating larvae and pupae even when the foundress of the attacked nest was on her nest. In addition, a foundress ofP. jadwigae distributed flesh balls thus obtained among their larvae. Discussion was made on the adaptive significance of the inter-colonial cannibalism. It was considered that, at first, it increases the foraging efficiency and secondly it plays a role in regulating population density.     

Circular dichroism of squid rhodopsin and its intermediates

Circular dichroism (CD) and absorption spectra of squid (Todarodes pacificus) rhodopsin, isorhodopsin and the intermediates were measured at low temperatures. Squid rhodopsin has positive CD bands at wavelengths corresponding the - and β-absorption bands at liquid nitrogen temperature (CD maxima: 485 nm at -band and 348 nm at β-band) as well as at room temperature (CD maxima: 474 nm at -band and 347 nm at β-band). The rotational strength of the -band has a molecular ellipticity about twice that of cattle rhodopsin. The CD spectrum of bathorhodopsin displays a negative peak at 532 nm, the rotational strength of which has an absolute value slightly larger than that of rhodopsin. The reversal in sign at -band of the CD spectrum may indicate that the isomerization of retinal chromophore from twisted 11-cis form to twisted 11-trans form has occurred in the process of conversion from rhodopsin to bathorhodopsin. Lumirhodopsin has a small negative CD band at 490 nm, the maximum of which lies at 25 nm shorter wavelengths than the absorption maximum (515 nm), and a large positive CD band near 290 nm, which is not observed in rhodopsin and the other intermediates. This band may be derived from a conformational change of the opsin. In the process of changing from lumirhodopsin to LM-rhodopsin, the CD bands at visible and near ultraviolet regions disappear. Both alkaline and acid metarhodopsins have no CD bands at visible and near ultraviolet regions.     

Mitogenic andadjuvant activities of polysaccharides from the cellular slime mold, Dictyostelium discoideum NC-4.

Cell surface and extracellular polysaccharide fractions obtained from Dictyostelium discoideum NC-4 cultured in bacteria-free medium showed strong B-cell mitogenic activities. Upon periodate treatment of the extra-cellular polysaccharide fraction this activity completely disappeared. The extracellular polysaccharide fraction could also enhance the antibody response in vitro against sheep red blood cells.     

Sesquiterpenes of six Porella species (hepaticae)

The distribution in six Porella species of drimane-, aromadendrane- and pinguisane-type sesquiterpenes and norsesquiterpenes is described. The sharp pungent substance of P. gracillissima, P. fauriei and P. macroloba is (+)-tadeonal.     

Biochemical studies on abnormal erythrocyte membranes protein abnormality of erythrocyte membrane in biliary obstruction

Biochemical studies on erythrocyte membranes from eleven obstructive jaundice patients (due to various disorders) have been undertaken. By scanning electron microscopic observation these erythrocytes were spur and target in appearance. The lipid composition showed a marked increase in both cholesterol and phosphatidylcholine. In addition to these changes, it was unexpectedly demonstrated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulfate that a specific membrane protein component 4.2 was reduced or absent in all cases tested. This membrane protein abnormality was identical with that of hereditary spherocytosis erythrocyte membranes. It is of particular interest to note that after surgical relief of biliary obstruction in a typical case of common duct cholelithiasis, the disc electrophoretic pattern of erythrocyte membranes became normal and both lipid composition and red cell morphology returned to normal.     

Inhibitory effects of steroidal allenes on growth,development, and steroid metabolism of the silkworm,Bombyx mori

Steroidal allenes, stigmasta-5,24(28),28-trien-3β-ol (allene-I) and cholesta-5,23,24-trien-3β-ol (allene-II), were tested for their inhibitory effects on growth, development, and steroid metabolism in the silkworm, Bombyx mori. The allenic analogue (I) of stigmasta-5,24(28)-dien-3β-ol (2) was found to be a specific inhibitor for the conversion of stigmast-5-en-3β-ol (1) to stigmasta-5, 24(28)-dien-3β-ol (2) and/or stigmasta-5,24(28)-dien-3β-ol (2) to 24,28-epoxy-stigmast-5-en-3β-ol (3) This inhibitor held the larvae in the second instar for more than 20 days without developing to the third instar, when administered alone or with the dietary sterols of stigmast-5-en-3β-ol (1) or stigmasta-5,24(28)-dien-3β-ol (2). The second allene (II) with a similar structure to cholesta-5,24-dien-3β-ol (4) was also found to be an inhibitor for insect growth and development, but it appeared not to be acting via inhibition of sterol dealkylation.     

Carbohydrate composition of the isolated cell walls of dermatophytes

In an attempt to evaluate taxonomic character of sugar composition of dermatophytes, the purified cell walls from 13 species are analyzed on neutral sugar composition by gas liquid chromatography. The results were principally compatible with those obtained by conventional morphological examination. Neutral sugar components of dermatophytes cell walls were mannose and glucose in the ratio of 1∶2.7 for Epidermophyton and 1∶1.4 for Microsporum. There were two types in Trichophyton, in which the ratios of mannose to glucose were 1∶1.6 and 1∶3.8. The cases of Trichophyton ferrugineum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes were exceptional. The ratio of the former was 1∶1.4, which implied the relation to Microsporum group, and the ratio of the latter was 1∶2.3, which was supposed to be the intermediate of two types of Trichophyton group. Albino type cell wall of Epidermophyton floccosum was more rich in glucose than pigmented type one.

Influences of the priming procedure and saline circulation conditions on polyvinylpyrrolidone in vitro elution from polysulfone membrane dialyzers

In hemodialysis (HD), the patient's blood is purified via circulation in an extracorporeal circuit containing a dialyzer. In the manufacturing process of polysulfone (PSu) membrane dialyzers, the membranes are hydrophilized via the addition of the hydrophilic agent polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to increase their hydraulic permeability. The elution of PVP from the membrane reduces the membrane's hydraulic permeability, and the eluted PVP could cause adverse effects in the human body. Therefore, it is important to identify the factors that induce PVP elution from PSu dialyzer membranes to improve the efficiency and safety of HD. In the present study, experimental circuits connecting each of the three types of PSu membrane dialyzers that had been sterilized, using gamma irradiation, autoclaving, or in-line steam methods, were prepared. After the dialyzers were primed, saline was circulated in the circuits at a flow rate of 100 mL/min or 200 mL/min. At 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 h after circulation was initiated, the amount of PVP eluted from the PSu membranes in vitro was determined. In this experimental setting, longer the circulation duration, greater the amount of PVP eluted from the PSu membranes of the tested dialyzers; however, the flow rate did not influence the in vitro elution of PVP. Furthermore, the immersion of the dialyzer membranes in saline for 24 h strongly facilitated the in vitro elution of PVP. In sum, these results suggest that the duration of PSu membrane incubation in saline is a determinant of the level of PVP elution from the PSu membrane dialyzers.     

Characterization of acrolein-induced protein cross-links

Lipid peroxidation products contribute to protein aggregation that occurs during oxidative stress in a number of degenerative disorders. Acrolein (ACR), a highly toxic lipid peroxidation aldehyde, is a strong cross-linking agent of cellular components such as proteins. To understand the mechanisms of oxidative stress-induced protein aggregation, this study characterized the ACR modification of chain B from bovine insulin by mass spectrometry. To identify the cross-linking sites, the ACR-treated peptide was digested with a protease and the resulting peptides were analysed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Inter- and intra-molecular cross-linking adducts were identified between amino groups and the side chain of histidine in the peptide. These results indicated that the ACR-induced cross-links were accompanied by two reactions, namely Michael addition and Schiff base formation. In conclusion, the use of mass spectrometric techniques provided chemical evidence for protein cross-linking with ACR.
