Influence of different physiological stages (young, mature and senescent) of Calotropis gigantea leaves on growth and reproductive ability of A. nerii and feeding, prey utilization, fecundity and lipid content of its predator M. sexmaculatus were investigated. Increased reproductive period, total life span and reproduction of nymphs per female of A. nerii were observed when reared on mature leaves. This relative preference of A. nerii and maximum utilization of mature leaves as compared to other physiological aged leaves are mainly due to changes in the chemical composition such as protein, carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid, nitrogen and phenolic of C. gigantea. Further, aphids reared on mature leaves influenced its predator's (M. sexmaculatus) growth, prey utilization and reproductive performances. Fecundity and longevity were high, while developmental time of predator was shorter on mature leaves fed aphid. Maximum prey utilization and increased efficiency of ingested and digested food of predator was observed on mature leaves reared aphid. Most benthic invertebrates have complex life cycles with planktonic larvae that return to the substratum to settle and metamorphose into a benthic stage. Although naturally produced chemical cues have long been thought to be important for the settlement or metamorphosis of invertebrate larvae, few ecologically relevant chemical cues have been clearly identified. The marine echinoid Holopneustes purpurascens has a complex life cycle, with a planktonic, nonfeeding dispersive larva that metamorphoses into a benthic stage that lives in the canopy of subtidal benthic algae such as the red alga Delisea pulchra and the kelp Ecklonia radiata. Recently recruited juveniles are found primarily on D. pulchra, and we hypothesized that this was in response to a chemical cue produced by this alga. Competent larvae metamorphosed in the presence of D. pulchra, or seawater surrounding this alga, but not in response to the presence of E. radiata or its extracts. A cue for metamorphosis was isolated and characterized from D. pulchra and found to be a water-soluble complex of the sugar floridoside and isethionic acid in a 1:1 molar ratio. The floridoside-isethionic acid complex also triggered settlement in H. purpurascens; however, this response was less specific than metamorphosis and was reversible. Larvae of H. purpurascens also metamorphosed in the presence of several other species of red, but not brown or green, algae from their habitat. Floridoside is found only in red algae, suggesting that the floridoside-isethionic acid complex may be acting as a cue for metamorphosis in other red algae as well as in D. pulchra. 相似文献

CD1 molecules can present microbial lipid Ag to T cells, suggesting that they participate in host defense against pathogens. In this study, we examined the role of CD1d in resistance to infection with the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb), an organism with proinflammatory lipid Ag. Bb infection of CD1d-deficient (CD1d(-/-)) mouse strains normally resistant to this pathogen resulted in arthritis. Pathology correlated with an increased prevalence of spirochete DNA in tissues and enhanced production of Bb-specific IgG, including IgG to Ag rapidly down-modulated on spirochetes in vivo. CD1d(-/-) mice exhibited high-titer Bb-specific IgG2a, an isotype commonly induced in disease-susceptible mice but not in the disease-resistant control mice in this study. These results show that CD1d deficiency impairs host resistance to a spirochete pathogen, and are the first example of a mutation that imparts Bb-resistant mice with the Ab and disease profile of a susceptible mouse strain. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe some rare cytologic findings in medullary thyroid carcinoma. STUDY DESIGN: Review of the fine needle aspiration smears from 15 cases of medullary thyroid carcinoma that were confirmed on histologic sections. The ages ranged between 31 and 67 years; 10 were female and 5 male. Thirteen were sporadic forms, and two were familial forms. RESULTS: Eight cases were classified as pleomorphic cell type and seven as monomorphic cell type. The smears revealed round, oval, triangular, polygonal and spindle-shaped cells, intracytoplasmic red granules, occasional intranuclear inclusions, amyloid, binucleated and multinucleated cells, and thick, granular chromatin. CONCLUSION: The rare cytologic findings in this study were grape cells, cytoplasmic nippling, elongated cytoplasmic processes, carrot-shaped nuclei, nuclear buddings, mast cell-like cells and a Burkitt's lymphoma-like appearance. MOTIVATION: In the maximum parsimony (MP) method, the tree requiring the minimum number of changes (discrepancy) to explain the given set of DNA or amino acid sequences is chosen to represent their evolutionary relationships. To find the MP tree, the branch-and-bound algorithm is normally used. For a partial phylogenetic-tree (one that has a subset of the organisms) the traditional algorithm assigns a cost equal to the discrepancy of the partial phylogenetic-tree. We propose a single column discrepancy heuristic which increases this cost by predicting a minimum additional discrepancy needed to attach the sequences yet to be added to the partial phylogenetic-tree. A dynamic Max-mini order of sequence addition is also proposed to quickly terminate branch-and-bound search paths that are guaranteed to lead to suboptimal solutions. RESULTS: We studied the running time of 47 problems generated from 17 data sets. The use of single column discrepancy heuristic speeded up the computation to 2.4-fold for static and 18.2-fold for dynamic search order. The improvement appeared to increase exponentially with the number of sequences. The proposed strategies are also likely to be useful in speeding up the MP tree search using heuristic searches that are based on branch-and-bound-like algorithms.CONTACT: s.kumar@asu.edu 相似文献
