Female rabbits (n = 36, 6 per group) were immunized with: (i) solubilized isolated porcine zona pellucida (SIZP), which contains ZP1, 82 kDa; ZP3 alpha, 55 kDa; and ZP3 beta, 55 kDa; (ii) a purified preparation of ZP3 alpha and ZP3 beta (ZP3); (iii) purified endo-beta-galactosidase digested glycoproteins ZP3 alpha-(EBGD) and (iv) ZP3 beta-(EBGD) (each about 30% deglycosylated); (v) chemically deglycosylated core proteins ZP3 alpha-(DG) and (vi) ZP3 beta-DG (each greater than 92% deglycosylated). Rabbits injected with saline (n = 6) or Freund's adjuvant (n = 6) served as controls. Rabbits were bled weekly to monitor titres. Every six weeks two animals from each group (n = 16) were selected for unilateral oophorectomy followed by histological examination. Sections were scored for numbers of primary, secondary and tertiary follicles. Anti-ZP3 titres developed in all treatment groups and correlated with carbohydrate content (peak per cent [125I]-labelled ZP3 binding by radioimmunoassay: SIZP 71.9 +/- 1.2, ZP3 70.0 +/- 2.5, ZP3 alpha-EBGD 60.9 +/- 5.3, ZP3 beta-EBGD 56.4 +/- 5.0, ZP3 alpha-DG 56.4 +/- 4.0, ZP3 beta-DG 53.5 +/- 4.3) (means +/- SEM). Animals immunized with SIZP, ZP3 and ZP3 beta-EBGD showed a statistically significant reduction in the number of primary, secondary and tertiary follicles compared with controls (P less than 0.01, MANOVA), whereas animals immunized with ZP3 alpha-EBGD, ZP3 alpha-DG and ZP3 beta-DG did not (P greater than 0.05, MANOVA). These results demonstrate that immunization with purified ZP3 alpha macromolecules (ZP3 alpha-EBGD, ZP3 alpha-DG) or ZP3 beta-DG does not produce histopathological changes in ovaries. An animal model was used to assess the effects of orally administered aqueous extract from two commercial health supplement
ingredients; First Leaf (FL; composed of blackcurrant extract powder, lactoferrin and lutein and is developed by the Four
Leaf Japan Co. Ltd, Japan) and Cassis Anthomix 30 (CAM30; blackcurrant extract powder which is developed by Just the Berries
Ltd, New Zealand) on the proliferation of lactobacilli and bifidobacterial species and some undesirable bacteria in the caeca
of rats. Gavaging rats with CAM30, FL or inulin three times weekly for 4 weeks resulted in a significant increase in the numbers
of bifidobacteria and/or lactobacilli and a significant decrease in the numbers of bacteroides and clostridia. Moreover, rats
gavaged with FL, CAM30 and inulin showed 31.5, 18 and 15% reduction in the activity of β-glucuronidase and 26, 30.4 and 18% increment in the activity of β-glucosidase when compared to the control group gavaged
with water, respectively. These benefits may make these products good candidates as prebiotic agents. In conclusion, this

Published X‐ray crystallographic structures for glycoside hydrolases (GHs) from 39 different families are surveyed according to some rigorous selection criteria, and the distances separating 208 pairs of catalytic carboxyl groups (20 α‐retaining, 87 β‐retaining, 38 α‐inverting, and 63 β‐inverting) are analyzed. First, the average of all four inter‐carboxyl O…O distances for each pair is determined; second, the mean of all the pair‐averages within each GH family is determined; third, means are determined for groups of GH families. No significant differences are found for free structures compared with those complexed with a ligand in the active site of the enzyme, nor for α‐GHs as compared with β‐GHs. The mean and standard deviation (1σ) of the unimodal distribution of average O…O distances for all families of inverting GHs is 8 ± 2Å, with a very wide range from 5Å (GH82) to nearly 13Å (GH46). The distribution of average O…O distances for all families of retaining GHs appears to be bimodal: the means and standard deviations of the two groups are 4.8 ± 0.3Å and 6.4 ± 0.6Å. These average values are more representative, and more likely to be meaningful, than the often‐quoted literature values, which are based on a very small sample of structures. The newly‐updated average values proposed here may alter perceptions about what separations between catalytic residues are “normal” or “abnormal” for GHs. Schistosoma haematobium miracidia were collected from a locality with a high prevalence of human infection with the animal parasite, S. mattheei, which hybridizes with S. haematobium, and from 2 localities with negligible infection rates. The terebratoria of the miracidia from these localities were compared with each other, with laboratory maintained S. haematobium and with four populations of S. mattheei by means of scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the terebratorial membrane of certain of the S. haematobium miracidia from the locality with a high S. mattheei prevalence in humans, resembled the more intricate membrane of S. mattheei.
