Licht- und elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen zur Entwicklung der Hydropoten von Nelumbo nucifera

Die Hydropoten von Nelumbo nucifera werden in verschicdenen Entwicklungsstadien einer licht- und elektronenmikroskopischen Analyse unterzogen. Dabei erweisen sie sich als ein den Menyanthaceen-Hydropoten sehr nahcstehender Differenzierungstyp. Sowohl morphologisch-anatomisch als auch in ihrem Verhalten gegenüber den Vitalfarbstoffen Toluidinblau und Methylviolett zeigen sie eine große Ähnlichkeit mit den Hydropoten von Nymphoides peltata. Von den drüsenartigen, hydropotenähnlichen Epidermisdifferenzierungen auf der Blattunterseite der Nymphaeaceen unterscheiden sie sich grundlegend, da ihnen jede feinstrukturelle Andeutung einer Drüsenfunktion fehlt. Die Abglicderung der Gattung Nelumbo von den Nymphaeales erscheint u. a. dadurch gerechtfertigt Die Differenzierungsrichtung der an noch eingerollten submersen Blättern in Form einzelner Zellen auftretenden Hydropotenmeristemoide ist von dem Medium abhängig, in dem sich die Blätter weiterentwickeln. Im Wasser bleiben die jungen Hydropotenzellen in ihrem Streckungswachstum gegenüber den normalen Epidermiszellen stark zurück. Es kommt zu einer Auflockerung des Wandmatcrials in den Zellwandkuppen und zu einem Anstieg des Flavonol- und Gerbstoffgehaltes in den Hydropotenzellsäften. Ferner nimmt die Eigenschaft zu, kationische Farbstoffe elektroadsorptiv in der Zellwandkuppe anzureichern. Die Kutikula über den Hydropoten bleibt elektronenoptisch gut durchstrahlbar. An der Luft wachsen die jungen Hydropotenzellen zu normalen Epidermiszellen aus, wobei die am stärksten differenzierten Hydropotenzentren manchmal degenerieren     

In Vitro and In Vivo Studies of Streptomycin-Dependent Cholera Vibrios

Streptomycin-dependent cholera vibrio strains were derived from Inaba, Ogawa, and NAG vibrios by the method of Mel. These phenotypes grew more slowly and attacked fermentable substances after a longer period of time than the streptomycin-sensitive parent strains. Rabbits injected with streptomycin-sensitive strains and their streptomycin-dependent forms showed homologous agglutinin production. Patas monkeys fed with 10(9) streptomycin-dependent strains shed them for 1 to 2 days without ill effect, whereas the same number of streptomycin-independent organisms caused disease. The possibility of the application of multiple doses of streptomycin-dependent organisms in oral immunization against cholera was considered.     

Vesicular structures in the dendrites of an insect olfactory receptor

The receptor dendrites of the antennal plaque organs of two species of fulgoroid insects contain 600 Å vesicles. These are concentrated in the distal vesicular region but also occur in the extreme tips of fine dendritic branches at the olfactory surface. At these points pore filaments run from the cuticular pores and are closely apposed to the dendritic membrane. Similar vesicles are found associated with Golgi bodies in the cell body and are also found more distally in multivesicular bodies. The multivesicular bodies appear to rupture and release vesicles. Vesicles also occur in the core of the dendrite cilium and it is assumed that they pass through the core and accumulate in the vesicular region. Similar vesicles appear to be a common feature in many, if not all, insect olfactory receptors.     

Synthesis of type 2 Adenovirus DNA in the Presence of Cycloheximide

Adenovirus type 2 DNA synthesis, either in permissive human cells or nonpermissive monkey cells, becomes independent of protein synthesis after the appearance of progeny viral DNA. In the presence of cycloheximide, semiconservative replication and initiation of progeny molecules can occur.     

Some properties of A β-1,3-glucanase from rye

Molecular-sieve chromatography of an extract from ungerminated rye indicated the presence of enzymes which hydrolysed cellobiose, laminaribiose and the β-glucans cellodextrin, laminarin and barley β-glucan. A purified endo-β-1,3-glucanase was prepared from the extract by ammonium sulphate fractionation and molecular-sieve chromatography on Biogel P60. The substrate specificity and some properties of the enzyme are reported and the in vivo role of the enzyme is discussed.
