The morphology of spermatozoa from the red veld rat, Aethomys chrysophilus, of Southern Africa is described; two very different types were found, which came from animals from two separate, as-yet-undescribed, species. In individuals from South Africa the sperm head had a somewhat disc-shaped nucleus and a large acrosome with a huge apical segment that, during epididymal transit, changed in form from initially projecting anteriorly to a highly complex structure that was flexed caudad and lay alongside part of the rest of the sperm head. In addition, the chromatin generally appeared to be not fully condensed. Spermatozoa from animals collected in Malawi were very different in morphology and had a head with a typical apical hook, a perforatorium, fully condensed chromatin, and a 4-μm-long ventral spur. Its sperm tail was also significantly longer. The time of divergence of these two groups of animals from a common ancestor is not known, but the present results show that a considerable morphological change in the sperm nucleus, acrosome, and subacrosomal space can evolve even between two, presumably closely related, species.  相似文献

Two siblings are described with duplication 14q/deletion 2q due to a paternal translocation (2;14) (q37.1;q31.2). The first one, a boy, born at term, lived 14 days. The second one, a female foetus, was born after induced labour when the anomaly was discovered by way of amniocentesis. They both had almost identical phenotypes. From a study of the literature it is inferred that a typical asymmetric head form, low set abnormal ears, micrognathia, long upper lip, rib anomalies, camptodactyly, long fingers and contractures are prominent features of the syndrome.  相似文献

The fine structure of epithelial cells of the small ventral prostate of Pseudomys australis males was studied. The cells were sometimes binucleated, exhibited relatively little granular endoplasmic reticulum, generally few secretory granules (probably reflecting a low proteinaceous secretory activity), but had abundant agranular endoplasmic reticulum (AER), similar to that in steroidogenic cells. Some of the mitochondria also showed tubular cristae. Furthermore, most cells had some irregular dense bodies in the cytoplasm which may have developed, by a gradual transformation process, from the membranes of AER, mitochondria and other organelles; they could be the product of degenerative changes in these organelles. These findings indicate a significant difference in the structure of these cells from those present in the ventral prostate of the hopping mouse, Notomys alexis. It is speculated that this gland secretes relatively little protein but perhaps more lipid or cholesterol-derived substance.  相似文献

Various morphological aspects of in vivo egg maturation and sperm-egg interaction were investigated in the Australian marsupial Sminthopsis crassicaudata with the transmission and scanning electron microscopes. Cortical granules invariably occurred in primary oocytes, with the number increasing after resumption of the first meiotic division. They generally occurred close to the oolemma, including the region near the oocyte nucleus. After mating, spermatozoa with intact acrosomes, which had a homogeneous electron-dense matrix, were found on the outer zona surface, but loss of acrosomal contents had occurred by the time of zona penetration. Sperm incorporation into the egg took place at the metaphase II stage of meiosis, and, at this time, cortical granules disappeared from the egg cortex. Sperm heads with condensed chromatin in the egg cytoplasm had an electron-dense layer of subacrosomal material over part of the dorsal nuclear surface, but no membranes were present around these incorporated spermatozoa. Sperm chromatin decondensation resulted in an elevation of egg cytoplasm, and the cell membrane over this area lacked microvilli. The pronuclear envelope was not laid down until after chromatin decondensation had occurred. By this time the fertilized egg had reached the uterus, and a smooth, electron-dense, shell membrane had been deposited. These observations, together with our previous findings, indicate that some of the processes of sperm-egg interaction are similar to those in eutherian mammals, whereas others appear highly divergent.  相似文献

The transbilayer pores formed by ion channel proteins contain extended columns of water molecules. The dynamic properties of such waters have been suggested to differ from those of water in its bulk state. Molecular dynamics simulations of ion channel models solvated within and at the mouths of their pores are used to investigate the dynamics and structure of intra-pore water. Three classes of channel model are investigated: a) parallel bundles of hydrophobic (Ala20) alpha-helices; b) eight-stranded hydrophobic (Ala10) antiparallel beta-barrels; and c) parallel bundles of amphipathic alpha-helices (namely, delta-toxin, alamethicin, and nicotinic acetylcholine receptor M2 helix). The self-diffusion coefficients of water molecules within the pores are reduced significantly relative to bulk water in all of the models. Water rotational reorientation rates are also reduced within the pores, particularly in those pores formed by alpha-helix bundles. In the narrowest pore (that of the Ala20 pentameric helix bundle) self-diffusion coefficients and reorientation rates of intra-pore waters are reduced by approximately an order of magnitude relative to bulk solvent. In Ala20 helix bundles the water dipoles orient antiparallel to the helix dipoles. Such dipole/dipole interaction between water and pore may explain how water-filled ion channels may be formed by hydrophobic helices. In the bundles of amphipathic helices the orientation of water dipoles is modulated by the presence of charged side chains. No preferential orientation of water dipoles relative to the pore axis is observed in the hydrophobic beta-barrel models.  相似文献

Covalent dimers of alamethicin form conducting structures with gating properties that permit measurement of current-voltage (I-V) relationships during the lifetime of a single channel. These I-V curves demonstrate that the alamethicin channel is a rectifier that passes current preferentially, with voltages of the same sign as that of the voltage that induced opening of the channel. The degree of rectification depends on the salt concentration; single-channel I-V relationships become almost linear in 3 M potassium chloride. These properties may be qualitatively understood by using Poisson-Nernst-Planck theory and a modeled structure of the alamethicin pore.  相似文献

Paraponera clavata workers engage in a period of local search after encountering a small amount of artificial nectar. Giving-up times from local search are not distributed normally; there is a strong skew to longer times. There is no statistically significant relationship between the amount of time required to collect the food and the subsequent search time. Giving-up time in response to the first reward presented to an ant is positively correlated with that ant's response to a second such reward. However, giving-up times diminish when an ant is presented with a series of rewards. Local search is a function of individual strategies, which remain relatively constant in the short term.  相似文献

Teasing apart neutral and adaptive genomic processes and identifying loci that are targets of selection can be difficult, particularly for nonmodel species that lack a reference genome. However, identifying such loci and the factors driving selection have the potential to greatly assist conservation and restoration practices, especially for the management of species in the face of contemporary and future climate change. Here, we focus on assessing adaptive genomic variation within a nonmodel plant species, the narrow‐leaf hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa ssp. angustissima), commonly used for restoration in Australia. We used a hybrid‐capture target enrichment approach to selectively sequence 970 genes across 17 populations along a latitudinal gradient from 30°S to 36°S. We analysed 8462 single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for FST outliers as well as associations with environmental variables. Using three different methods, we found 55 SNPs with significant correlations to temperature and water availability, and 38 SNPs to elevation. Genes containing SNPs identified as under environmental selection were diverse, including aquaporin and abscisic acid genes, as well as genes with ontologies relating to responses to environmental stressors such as water deprivation and salt stress. Redundancy analysis demonstrated that only a small proportion of the total genetic variance was explained by environmental variables. We demonstrate that selection has led to clines in allele frequencies in a number of functional genes, including those linked to leaf shape and stomatal variation, which have been previously observed to vary along the sampled environmental cline. Using our approach, gene regions subject to environmental selection can be readily identified for nonmodel organisms.  相似文献
