A multi-group semi-stochastic model is formulated to identify possible causes of why different strains of Salmonella develop so much variation in their infection dynamics in UK dairy herds. The model includes demography (managed populations) and various types of transmission: direct, pseudovertical and indirect (via free-living infectious units in the environment). The effects of herd size and epidemiological parameters on mean prevalence of infection and mean time until fade out are investigated. Numerical simulation shows that higher pathogen-induced mortality, shorter infectious period, more persistent immune response and more rapid removal of faeces result in a lower mean prevalence of infection, a shorter mean time until fade out, and a greater probability of fade out of infection within 600 days. Combining these results and those for the deterministic counterpart could explain differences in observed epidemiological patterns and help to identify the factors inducing the decline in reported cases of epidemic strains such as DT104 in cattle. We further investigate the effect of group structure on the probability of a major outbreak by using the stochastic threshold theory in homogeneous populations and that in heterogeneous populations. Numerical studies suggest that group structure makes major outbreaks less likely than would be the case in a homogeneous population with the same basic reproduction number. Moreover, some control strategies are suggested by investigating the effect of epidemiological parameters on the probability of an epidemic.  相似文献

Lactarius is a genus of Basidiomycotina with mainly agaricoid representatives, which are characterised by the excretion of a typical milky fluid. In particular, the colour, changes and taste of this latex-like milk are often used as a taxonomically important character. When it is exuded several chemical reactions occur. To date, NMR spectroscopy is generally used for chemical investigation of this latex. However, as a vibrational spectroscopic technique Raman spectroscopy has several advantageous properties for this type of research. The aim of this study is to investigate whether Raman spectroscopy can be used as an alternative analytical technique to monitor the chemical reactions in Lactarius latex. Therefore, this paper presents the first Raman spectra of Lactarius latex and provides an interpretation of the Raman bands that are present. L. lacunarum latex spectra are thoroughly investigated by 2D correlation analysis and are compared with latex spectra of other species (L. chrysorrheus, L. deterrimus, L. fluens, L. glyciosmus and L. salmonicolor).  相似文献

When modelling the transmission of infection within small populations, it is necessary to consider the possibility of stochastic fade-out of infection. We present a semi-stochastic model for the transmission of a microparasite, in this case Escherichia coli O157, within a multigroup system, namely a typical UK dairy herd. The model includes birth, death, maturation, the dry/lactating cycle and various types of transmission (i.e. direct, pseudovertical (representing direct faecal-oral transmission between dam and calf within the first 48 h) and indirect (via free-living infectious units in the environment)). We present the results of our simulation study alongside data from empirical studies and also compare simulation results with those for the corresponding deterministic model. We then examine the effects of reducing shedding in the food-producing groups on outbreak size and prevalence of infection. A sensitivity analysis of herd prevalence reveals that, for both the deterministic and the semi-stochastic model, the prevalence within the herd is most sensitive to two parameters relating to the weaned group. This supports our previously reported conclusions for the deterministic model, which were based on an analysis of the next-generation matrix. The sensitivity analysis also indicates that herd prevalence is greatly affected by two other parameters relating to the lactating group. We conclude by discussing the possible efficacy of suggested intervention strategies.  相似文献

Epizoochorous dispersal of plant seeds is an important long-distance dispersal mechanism. Yet little is known about retention times of seeds in animal furs and hence about potential dispersal distances of the seeds. Here, we used marked seeds of 12 plant species to determine seed depletion curves on Galloway cattle and Haflinger horse in three vegetation types (forest, tall herbage vegetation and meadow), in both dry and rainy weather conditions. In the long fur of Galloway cattle, seeds were retained significantly longer than in the short fur of Haflinger horse. In general, seed retention times were not considerably affected by the structure of the surrounding vegetation. The impact of the weather was negligible, only affecting the retention of some plant species. Negative exponential functions were fitted to the seed depletion curves. Using the parameters of curve estimations in the different conditions of animal species and vegetation structure, half-life seed retention times of up to 13 h for Galloway cattle and up to more than 4 h for Haflinger horse could be calculated, with corresponding potential half-life dispersal distances in the order of magnitude of tens of metres to a few kilometres. Different seed traits correlated with seed retention times in the long cattle fur and in the short horse fur, respectively.  相似文献

Lipases are important as additives in detergent formulations but their biocatalytic potential is increasingly exploited in the synthesis of high-added value chemicals, in fine-chemical production and in the pharmaceutical industry. Traditionally, conventional purification schemes comprise several chromatographic steps. Here we report a new purification procedure of the lipase (LipA) that is endogenously secreted by the Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia glumae. This affinity purification combines the specific binding scaffold of a lipase-specific foldase (Lif) and the intrinsic resistance to chemical denaturation of LipA. The newly devised method is less labor-intensive, is fast, leads to a homogeneous preparation and can be easily scaled up. The novel and the conventional purification strategies were evaluated in parallel and characteristics of the B. glumae lipase were analyzed via CD spectroscopy. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was still present in the samples purified via the conventional purification scheme and was shown to increase the thermostability of the lipase.  相似文献

A new direct gas chromatography procedure (headspace solid phase microextraction) was developed for the quantitative determination of methanol in biodiesel. The analysis was performed by exposing a carboxen–polydimethylsiloxane SPME fiber assembly to the headspace of the biodiesel sample. The gas chromatography used a HP-5 capillary column and flame ionization detection. A polynomial relationship was observed between the methanol concentration and its peak area. This method showed good reproducibility (average relative standard deviation 7.06%) and recovery (average recovery 100.2%).  相似文献

Time-dependent properties of chemical signals are probably crucially important to many animals, but little is known about the dynamics of chemoreceptors. Behavioral evidence of dynamic sensitivity includes the control of moth flight by pheromone plume structure, and the ability of some blood-sucking insects to detect varying concentrations of carbon dioxide, possibly matched to host breathing rates. Measurement of chemoreceptor dynamics has been limited by the technical challenge of producing controlled, accurate modulation of olfactory and gustatory chemical concentrations over suitably wide ranges of amplitude and frequency. We used a new servo-controlled laminar flow system, combined with photoionization detection of surrogate tracer gas, to characterize electroantennograms (EAG) of Drosophila antennae during stimulation with fruit odorants or aggregation pheromone in air. Frequency response functions and coherence functions measured over a bandwidth of 0–100 Hz were well characterized by first-order low-pass linear filter functions. Filter time constant varied over almost a tenfold range, and was characteristic for each odorant, indicating that several dynamically different chemotransduction mechanisms are present. Pheromone response was delayed relative to fruit odors. Amplitude of response, and consequently signal-to-noise ratio, also varied consistently with different compounds. Accurate dynamic characterization promises to provide important new information about chemotransduction and odorant-stimulated behavior.  相似文献
