Considerable variation exists not only in the kinds of transposable elements (TEs) occurring within the genomes of different species, but also in their abundance and distribution. Noting a similarity to the assortment of organisms among ecosystems, some researchers have called for an ecological approach to the study of transposon dynamics. However, there are several ways to adopt such an approach, and it is sometimes unclear what an ecological perspective will add to the existing co‐evolutionary framework for explaining transposon‐host interactions. This review aims to clarify the conceptual foundations of transposon ecology in order to evaluate its explanatory prospects. We begin by identifying three unanswered questions regarding the abundance and distribution of TEs that potentially call for an ecological explanation. We then offer an operational distinction between evolutionary and ecological approaches to these questions. By determining the amount of variance in transposon abundance and distribution that is explained by ecological and evolutionary factors, respectively, it is possible empirically to assess the prospects for each of these explanatory frameworks. To illustrate how this methodology applies to a concrete example, we analyzed whole‐genome data for one set of distantly related mammals and another more closely related group of arthropods. Our expectation was that ecological factors are most informative for explaining differences among individual TE lineages, rather than TE families, and for explaining their distribution among closely related as opposed to distantly related host genomes. We found that, in these data sets, ecological factors do in fact explain most of the variation in TE abundance and distribution among TE lineages across less distantly related host organisms. Evolutionary factors were not significant at these levels. However, the explanatory roles of evolution and ecology become inverted at the level of TE families or among more distantly related genomes. Not only does this example demonstrate the utility of our distinction between ecological and evolutionary perspectives, it further suggests an appropriate explanatory domain for the burgeoning discipline of transposon ecology. The fact that ecological processes appear to be impacting TE lineages over relatively short time scales further raises the possibility that transposons might serve as useful model systems for testing more general hypotheses in ecology. 相似文献

The biochemical regulation of photosynthate partitioning was investigated in a starchless mutant (TC7) of Arabidopsts thaliana (L.) Henyh, that was deficient in chloroplast phosphoglucomutase (Caspar et al. 1985. Plant Physiol. 79: 11–17). Plants were raised at 20°C with a 20 h light and 4 h dark period, so that the growth rates of the mutant and wild type were similar. Two or 3 isoforms of phosphoglucomutase were separated by ion-exchange chromatography using mutant and wild type leaf preparations, respectively. Initial rate kinetics of all isoforms were similar. Light-saturated photosynthetic oxygen evolution rates of the mutant and wild type were 224 and 302 nmol g-1 chlorophyll h-1 , respectively. Starch, sucrose and hexose concentrations were unchanged in wild type leaves after a dark to light transition, whereas sucrose and hexose increased in mutant leaves. Hexose-phosphates accumulated in both genotypes in the light, although the steady-state leaf concentrations of glucose 6-phosphate were 3-fold higher in mutant than in wild type samples. Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate and glucose 1,6-bisphosphate were lower in the mutant than in the wild type at the end of the dark period when mutant leaves were depleted of carbohydrates. Levels of UTP were lower in the mutant than in the wild type, possibly indicating that growth conditions had induced phosphate limited photosynthesis. Missense mutations in the PRKCG gene have recently been identified in spinocerebellar ataxia 14 (SCA14) patients; these include the Gly118Asp mutation that we found in a large Dutch autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia (ADCA) family. We subsequently screened the current Dutch ataxia cohort (approximately 900 individuals) for SCA14 mutations in the Cys2 region of the PRKCG gene. We identified the Gly118Asp mutation in another eight individuals from five small families. Haplotype analysis identified a shared chromosomal region surrounding the SCA14 gene, and genealogical research was able to link all these ADCA patients to a single common ancestor. We therefore confirmed that the Gly118Asp mutation is a SCA14 founder mutation in the Dutch ADCA population. 相似文献

The field of proteomics is advancing rapidly as a result of powerful new technologies and proteomics experiments yield a vast
and increasing amount of information. Data regarding protein occurrence, abundance, identity, sequence, structure, properties,
and interactions need to be stored. Currently, a common standard has not yet been established and open access to results is
needed for further development of robust analysis algorithms. Databases for proteomics will evolve from pure storage into
knowledge resources, providing a repository for information (meta-data) which is mainly not stored in simple flat files. This
review will shed light on recent steps towards the generation of a common standard in proteomics data storage and integration,

Some ants have an extraordinary form of social organization, called unicoloniality, whereby individuals mix freely among physically separated nests. This mode of social organization has been primarily studied in introduced and invasive ant species, so that the recognition ability and genetic structure of ants forming unicolonial populations in their native range remain poorly known. We investigated the pattern of aggression and the genetic structure of six unicolonial populations of the ant Formica paralugubris at four hierarchical levels: within nests, among nests within the same population, among nests of populations within the Alps or Jura Mountains and among nests of the two mountain ranges. Ants within populations showed no aggressive behaviour, but recognized nonnestmates as shown by longer antennation bouts. Overall, the level of aggression increased with geographic and genetic distance but was always considerably lower than between species. No distinct behavioural supercolony boundaries were found. Our study provides evidence that unicoloniality can be maintained in noninvasive ants despite significant genetic differentiation and the ability to discriminate between nestmates and nonnestmates. 相似文献
