Recent studies among several plant species have shown that maturationof the largest vessels in primary xylem of roots occurs muchlater than is commonly assumed. These results have importantimplications for studies of water and nutrient uptake sincethe condition of the vessels, termed late metaxylem (LMX), mighthave a large effect on the potential conductivity of the xylem.To determine whether this phenomenon occurred in common bean(Phaseolus vulgaris L.), patterns of root xylem differentiationwere studied in young bean plants. Soil bulk density was variedin one trial to determine whether differentiation of LMX wassensitive to the growing medium. Vessels of LMX lost cell contentsand-became functional conduits between 100 and 150 mm from theroot apex. Increasing soil bulk density caused the zone of maturationof LMX to shift toward the root apex, but this zone was nevercloser than 67 mm. In the region where the primary root increasedin diameter as it merged with the hypocotyl, a zone was foundwhere vessels increased in number, had a reduced diameter, andwere arranged in a ring, the normal tetrarch arrangement ofthe xylem being lost. Potential conductivity in this zone wasconsiderably less than in zones with conventional large LMXvessels, so the zone appears to present an important restrictionto water transport from the root to the shoot. To evaluate the prophylactic effectiveness of influenza inactivated chromatographic vaccine, limited epidemiological observations were made on school children aged 11-14 years in Leningrad, in the autumn of 1981 and the spring of 1982. For immunization, made in a single administration, the vaccine composed of A (H3N2) + +A (H1N1) and containing 3.0-3.4 micrograms of hemagglutinin of each component per 0.2 ml of the preparation was used. Altogether 6928 schoolchildren were under observation; of these, 3686 children were immunized and 3242 children received placebo. The results of questioning and the analysis of morbidity rate among the schoolchildren, both immunized and receiving placebo, showed the safety and low reactogenicity of the vaccine irrespective of the time of the immunization campaign. The immunogenic potency of the preparation, as indicated by all observation results, proved to be higher in spring, than in autumn. The data thus obtained indicate that children immunized in spring were better protected and retained a higher level of protection within 12 months after immunization. The shift of the time of the immunization campaign from autumn to spring increased the immune layer in the groups of children by 16.5%. In 10 months after spring immunization the morbidity rate in influenza and acute respiratory diseases among the vaccinees was found to decrease 1.7 times.  相似文献

The effect of Streptomyces spheroides proteinases on the process and character of the local reaction to intraperitoneal infection of mice with E. coli was studied experimentally. It was shown that administration of the proteinases promoted a decrease in the dissemination of the abdominal cavity and a more rapid elimination of the microorganisms from the infection foci. The proteinases potentiated the macrophagal component of the local reaction by accelerating migration of the macrophages and increasing their phagocytic activity and the activity of the lysosomal enzymes. Proteinases gave rise to a pronounced activation of the neutrophils, an increase in the phagocytic capacity of the young forms and a change in intracellular enzymes. It was demonstrated that proteinases changed interrelation between the cell elements in the infection foci, the character of interaction of the quantitative and functional parameters of the local reaction and interrelationship between the phagocytic activity and the enzymatic balance of the cells. They increased the effect of the macrophages on migration and the functional state of the neutrophiles.  相似文献

de la Fuente M.S. & Fernández, M.S. 2010: An unusual pattern of limb morphology in the Tithonian marine turtle Neusticemys neuquina from the Vaca Muerta Formation, Neuquén Basin, Argentina. Lethaia, Vol. 44, pp. 15–25. Here, we report an unusual pattern in the manus and pes morphology of the Tithonian marine turtle Neusticemys neuquina. We analyse the forelimbs of two previously known specimens and describe the hind limbs of two previously undescribed specimens. Neusticemys neuquina is characterized by a relative elongation of both the forelimb and hind limb, compared with stem Chelonoidea, as well as an elongation of the pedal digit V, achieved through the elongation of the bones, as well as a moderate hyperphalangy.
