Habitat disturbance, a common consequence of anthropogenic land use practices, creates human–animal interfaces where humans, wildlife, and domestic species can interact. These altered habitats can influence host–microbe dynamics, leading to potential downstream effects on host physiology and health. Here, we explored the effect of ecological overlap with humans and domestic species and infection with the protozoan parasite Giardia duodenalis on the bacteria of black and gold howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya), a key sentinel species, in northeastern Argentina. Fecal samples were screened for Giardia duodenalis infection using a nested PCR reaction, and the gut bacterial community was characterized using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Habitat type was correlated with variation in A. caraya gut bacterial community composition but did not affect gut bacterial diversity. Giardia presence did not have a universal effect on A. caraya gut bacteria across habitats, perhaps due to the high infection prevalence across all habitats. However, some bacterial taxa were found to vary with Giardia infection. While A. caraya's behavioral plasticity and dietary flexibility allow them to exploit a range of habitat conditions, habitats are generally becoming more anthropogenically disturbed and, thus, less hospitable. Alterations in gut bacterial community dynamics are one possible indicator of negative health outcomes for A. caraya in these environments, since changes in host–microbe relationships due to stressors from habitat disturbance may lead to negative repercussions for host health. These dynamics are likely relevant for understanding organism responses to environmental change in other mammals.  相似文献

Freeman (2009, 2010) argue that Ediacara “faunas” should be analysed using “promorphologies” of extant animals, that rangeomorphs and erniettomorphs are colonial animals, and that Vernanimalcula is a bilaterian animal. Recent studies of Ediacara fossils have provided multiple lines of evidence that these fossils represent a sample of phylogenetically diverse marine organisms that included crown-group animals as well as stem-group animals and non-animals. Thus, it is inappropriate to analyse Ediacara fossils using “promorphologies” of extant animals. The interpretation of rangeomorphs and erniettomorphs as colonial animals is inconsistent with the functional morphologies of these Ediacara fossils. Although Vernanimalcula is a fossil, the purported germ layers of Vernanimalcula are of diagenetic origin and there is no morphological evidence in support of its bilaterian affinity.  相似文献

Since publication of the first record of Eichhornia crassipes in Cameroon in 1997, the weed has become highly invasive in the Wouri River Basin. Between June and September 2014, a socio-economic survey using participatory and qualitative methods was undertaken in the riparian villages of the Wouri River Basin to assess the perception of respondents to the presence of water hyacinth. The survey revealed that water hyacinth was a significant threat to activities along the river, which included fishing, sand extraction and river transportation. The presence of water hyacinth mats reduced catch rates of several common fish species, river transportation by 75%, and significantly reduced the income for sand extraction. Cameroon employs manual clearing of water hyacinth; however, respondents indicated they would consider other control methods, provided they do not have any negative impacts.  相似文献

In several primate species, females mate promiscuously and several adult males peacefully co‐reside in the same social group. We investigated female mating behavior in two neighboring multimale–multifemale groups of Alouatta caraya in northern Argentina (27°20′S–58°40′W). All adult individuals in each group were marked with identification anklets and ear tags, and followed for five consecutive full days per month during 20 consecutive months. We recorded 219 copulations for eight resident females in these two groups. Thirty‐two percent of matings involved extra‐group copulations and 68% were with resident males. During periods when females were likely to conceive and during periods when females were nonfertile (pregnancy and lactation), there were no significant differences in the average number of resident and nonresident males with which they copulated (G‐test: Gadj=0.1, df=3, P>0.05). In both of our study groups, adult males were tolerant of the mating activities between resident males and resident females, but acted aggressively and collectively (howling, border vigilance, and fighting) when extragroup males attempted to enter the group and mate with resident females. Given the frequency of extragroup matings, we examined the distance females traveled to engage in these copulations, time engaged in pre‐ and postcopulatory behavior, and the risk of injury during extragroup copulations. These costs were found to be relatively small. We suggest that female promiscuity is the prime driver or constraint on male reproductive opportunities in this species. Female promiscuity in A. caraya appears to represent a mixed mating strategy that may serve to increase opportunities for genetic diversity between a female's successive offspring as well as minimize the risk of infanticide by spreading paternity estimates across a larger number of adult males. ABC transporters pump out from cells a large number of endo- and xenobiotics including signal molecules and toxins; they are molecular markers of stem/progenitor cells as well. Here, we present the study of temporal/spatial patterns of Abcb1 isoforms and Abcg2 transporter expression and efflux activity in pre- and early postimplantation murine embryos. We found in 2-cell embryos abcb1a, abcb1b and abcg2 mRNAs which were believed to be maternally inherited. The expression of abcb1b and abcg2 genes was found in blastocysts and in 7 days postcoitum (dpc) embryos, while in 9dpc embryos beside of abcb1b/abcg2, the abcb1a gene was expressed. The abcb2 mRNA was detectable neither in pre- nor in postimplantation embryos. Moreover, we analysed temporal/spatial patterns of rhodamine 123/Hoechst 33342 efflux, which mirrors the ABC transporter phenotype, from individual cells of pre- and postimplantation murine embryos. The blastomeres of 2-, 4- and 8-cell embryos had efflux-inactive phenotype. Single, efflux-active cells emerged first in the morulae and their number increased in blastocyst inner cell mass. In 6 and 7 dpc embryos, all embryonic cells hold the efflux-active phenotype. Proximal embryonic endoderm of 6-8 dpc embryos contained two sub-domains: one consisted of efflux-active cells and another one of efflux-inactive cells reflecting polarity of an embryo. Between 7 and 8 dpc, at the onset of organogenesis, the vehement surge of efflux-inactive embryonic cells occurred, and their number increased in 9 dpc embryos, which consequently contained few efflux-active cells.  相似文献

In the dog CL are the only source of the progesterone in cyclic and pregnant animals. From a high expression of cyclooxygenase 2 (Cox2) at the beginning of the dioestrus and a low one at the end it was suggested that prostanoids may play a role in the formation of the CL. This led to the hypothesis that also in the dog PGE2 of luteal origin might act as paracrine/autocrine factor. Hence, expression of the prostaglandin E2 synthase (PGES) and its receptors (EP2 and EP4) was determined during the course of dioestrus in canine CL from days 5, 15, 25, 35, 45, 65 after ovulation, following cloning of PGES using SMART RACE PCR, which revealed a high homology (82-94%) with other species. Real Time (TaqMan) PCR showed a high PGES and EP2 expression in the early CL-phase with a significant decrease thereafter. EP4 revealed a constant expression pattern throughout the life span of the CL. In situ hybridization co-localized PGES, EP2 and EP4 in the cytoplasm of the luteal cells only. In conclusion, our data suggest that in the dog PGE2 of luteal origin acts by autocrine mechanism as a luteotropic factor through its EP2 and EP4 receptors during the phase of CL-formation.  相似文献
