Rats with chronic gastric fistulas were stimulated for 12 or 24 h with constant intravenous infusion of pentagastrin. When secretin was also infused for the last half period of the experiment, respectively, 6 or 12 h, the volume of gastric secretion and HCl output were significantly reduced but the concentration of pepsin was significantly increased. Decisions about when and where to travel are likely to have a strong influence on the feeding, ecology, and foraging strategies of individual primates living in a cohesive social group. Specifically, given differences in age, sex, reproductive status, or social dominance, particular group members may benefit from remaining at their present location while others may benefit from traveling to another area of their range to feed or rest. In this study, we present data on movement coordination in two groups of wild black and gold howler monkeys inhabiting Isla Brasilera (27º 20′S and 58º 40′W) in northern Argentina. We examine how factors such as sex, age, reproductive status, and dominance affect patterns of group movement coordination at feeding or resting sites, and in the context of intergroup encounters. Two groups were followed five days a month from sunrise to sunset during June to November 2004. Using focal and scan sampling techniques, we recorded 262 group displacements, the identity of the individual initiating and leading displacement, and the identity of the first individual to arrive at feeding, resting, or intergroup encounter sites. We found that overall age was the only factor that influenced group coordination: adults led more often (94.5 %) than immature individuals (5.5 %) in both groups. We did not find differences among adults. However, we found that males lead more often than females at intergroup encounters, consistent with the male-mate defense hypothesis. The distributed leadership pattern among adults observed in this study may suggest that adult individuals make equally shared consensus decisions. This pattern should be further examined using this individual-level approach in other populations of black and gold howlers, other species of howlers, and in other atelines in which within-group social tolerance is the rule rather than the exception. 相似文献

Carbon-13 relaxation data are reported for exocyclic groups of hexopyranosyl sugar residues in the repeating unit within the Escherichia coli O91 O-antigen polysaccharide in a dilute D2O solution. The measurements of T 1, T 2 and heteronuclear nuclear Overhauser enhancements were carried out at 310 K at two magnetic fields (16.4 T, 21.1 T). The data were analyzed using the standard and extended Lipari–Szabo models, as well as a conformational jump model. The extended version of the Lipari–Szabo and the two-site jump models were most successful for the hydroxymethyl groups of Gal and GlcNAc sugar residues. Different dynamics was found for the hydroxymethyl groups associated with different configurations (d-gluco, d-galacto) of the sugar residues, the latter being faster than the former. 相似文献

Water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes is considered the most damaging aquatic weed in the world. However, few studies have quantified the impact of this weed economically and ecologically, and even fewer studies have quantified the benefits of its control. This paper focuses on water loss saving as the benefit derived from biological control of this plant between 1990 and 2013 at New Year’s Dam, Alicedale, Eastern Cape, South Africa. Estimates of water loss due to evapotranspiration from water hyacinth vary significantly; therefore, the study used three different rates, high, medium and low. A conservative raw agriculture value of R 0.26 per m3 was used to calculate the benefits derived by the water saved. The present benefit and cost values were determined using 10% and 5% discount rates. The benefit/cost ratio at the low evapotranspiration rate was less than one, implying that biological control was not economically viable but, at the higher evapotranspiration rates, the return justified the costs of biological control. However, at the marginal value product of water, the inclusion of the costs of damage to infrastructure, or the adverse effects of water hyacinth on biodiversity, would justify the use of biological control, even at the low transpiration rate. 相似文献

The interaction of Ni(II) ions with adenine mononucleotides (5′-AMP, 3′-AMP, 2′-AMP, 2′,3′-cAMP, 3′,5′-cAMP) was studied
in aqueous solution using Raman spectroscopy and 13C and 31P NMR paramagnetic relaxation measurements. Macrochelate structures were observed to form for all non-cyclic AMPs, with increasing
stability in the series: 3′-AMP < 2′-AMP < 5′-AMP. N7 of adenine was found to be the key site of the Ni(II)-adenine interaction
for all non-cyclic AMPs. For 2′-AMP, an alternative binding to the pyrimidine ring may also exist. The dependence of Raman
spectra on AMP and Ni(II) concentration confirmed the existence of a stable 1 : 2 Ni(II)-(5′-AMP) complex, besides the 1 : 1
complexes. In this complex, the adenine moieties of both 5′-AMP molecules are situated close to Ni(II), and their relative
orientations with respect to the cation are very similar. The paramagnetic relaxation enhancements of the carbons indicate
that the nickel ion is not located in the plane of the adenine units, but that the line connecting Ni(II) and N7 deviates
strongly from the adenine planes. Phosphates are outer-sphere coordinated by the cation. Findings from both methods have led
us to propose possible global architectures of the complex.

Summary Microstratigraphic, sedimentological, and taphonomic features of the Ferraz Shell Bed, from the Upper Permian (Kazanian-Tatarian?)
Corumbataí Formation of Rio Claro Region (the Paraná Basin, Brazil), indicate that the bed consists of four distinct microstratigraphic
units. They include, from bottom to top, a lag concentration (Unit 1), a partly reworked storm deposit (Unit 2), a rapidly
deposited sandstone unit with three thin horizons recording episodes of reworking (Unit 3), and a shell-rich horizon generated
by reworking/winnowing that was subsequently buried by storm-induced obrution deposit (Unit 4). The bioclasts of the Ferraz
Shell Bed represent exclusively bivalve mollusks.Pinzonellaillusa andTerraia aequilateralis are the dominant species. Taphonomic analysis indicates that mollusks are heavily time-averaged (except for some parts of
Unit 3). Moreover, different species are time-averaged to a different degree (disharmonious time-averaging). The units differ
statistically from one another in their taxonomic and ecological composition, in their taphonomic pattern, and in the size-frequency
distributions of the two most common species. Other Permian shell beds of the Paraná Basin are simílar to the Ferraz Shell
Bed in their faunal composition (they typically contain similar sets of 5 to 10 bivalve species) and in their taphonomic,
sedimentologic, and microstratigraphic characteristics. However, rare shell beds that include 2–3 species only and are dominated
by articulated shells preserved in life position also occur. Diversity levels in the Permian benthic associations of the Paraná
Basin were very low, with the point diversity of 2–3 species and with the within-habitat and basin-wide (alpha and gamma)
diversities of 10 species, at most. The Paraná Basin benthic communities may have thus been analogous to low-diversity bivalve-dominated
associations of the present-day Baltic Sea. The ‘Ferraz-type’ shell beds of the Paraná Basin represent genetically complex
and highly heterogeneous sources of paleontological data. They are cumulative records of spectra of benthic ecosystems time-averaged
over long periods of time (102–104 years judging from actualistic research). Detailed biostratinomic reconstructions of shell beds can not only offer useful
insights into their depositional histories, but may also allow paleoecologists to optimize their sampling designs, and consequently,
refine paleoecological and paleoenvironmental interpretations. 相似文献
