Comparison of reproductive parameters for populations of eastern North Pacific common dolphins: Delphinus capensis and D. delphis

Reproductive parameters were estimated and compared for eastern North Pacific populations of common dolphins using specimen and photogrammetric data. Age and length data for Delphinus capensis and D. delphis specimens recovered as bycatch or strandings were used to estimate the postnatal growth rates needed to estimate age for calves measured in aerial photographs. Bayesian methods propagated uncertainty among models and revealed that the 2009 cohort of calves had birth dates centered on 6 March 2009 for D. capensis and 12 December 2008 for D. delphis. The evidence for discrete calving seasons suggests a mechanism of reproductive isolation has evolved between species. Photogrammetric data and Bayesian methods were also used to estimate the average length at which calves swim independently: 145.1 cm (≈ 11.1 mo) in D. capensis and 140.1 cm (≈ 14.0 mo) in D. delphis, and the proportion of calves (calves/dolphins counted): 0.045 in D. capensis and 0.069 in D. delphis. The latter parameter was converted to an index of calf production (calf/female dolphin) that was >50% lower than pregnancy rates suggesting few births occurred during the study year. An increased formation of oxygen free radicals in the reperfused rat small intestine is concluded from accumulations of oxidized glutathione, of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and of 4-hydroxynonenal. Xanthine oxidase inhibition prevented these biochemical changes. The histological and electronmicroscopic studies of intestinal sucosa showed significant structural deteriorations already at the end of the ischemic period obviously due to disturbances of cellular energy metabolism. The extent of dosage was increased during the reperfusion without qualitative changes of the pattern of structural dosage. The beneficial effects of oxypurinol on biochemical criteria which occurred already in the early phase of reperfusion were not reflected in significant morphological differences within the first hour of reperfusion. Differences of morphological findings between oxypurinol-treated and untreated animals could be observed after longer periods of reperfusion--during the regeneration of the tissue. 相似文献

Responses of ecosystems to environmental changes vary greatly across habitats, organisms and observational scales. The Quaternary fossil record of the Po Basin demonstrates that marine communities of the northern Adriatic re-emerged unchanged following the most recent glaciation, which lasted approximately 100 000 years. The Late Pleistocene and Holocene interglacial ecosystems were both dominated by the same species, species turnover rates approximated predictions of resampling models of a homogeneous system, and comparable bathymetric gradients in species composition, sample-level diversity, dominance and specimen abundance were observed in both time intervals. The interglacial Adriatic ecosystems appear to have been impervious to natural climate change either owing to their persistence during those long-term perturbations or their resilient recovery during interglacial phases of climate oscillations. By contrast, present-day communities of the northern Adriatic differ notably from their Holocene counterparts. The recent ecosystem shift stands in contrast to the long-term endurance of interglacial communities in face of climate-driven environmental changes. 相似文献

In nonpregnant and pregnant dogs the corpora lutea (CL) are the only source of progesterone (P4) which shows an almost identical secretion pattern until the rapid decrease of P4 prior to parturition. For the nonpregnant dog clear evidence has been obtained that physiological luteal regression is devoid of a functional role of the PGF2α-system and seems to depend on the provision of StAR. Yet in pregnant dogs the rapid prepartal luteal regression, coinciding with an increase of PGF2α, may be indicative for different regulatory mechanisms. To assess this situation and by applying semi-quantitative Real Time (Taq Man) RT-PCR, expression patterns were determined for the following factors in CL of pregnant and prepartal dogs and of mid-pregnant dogs treated with the antiprogestin Aglepristone: cyclooxygenase 2 (Cox2), prostaglandin E2 synthase (PGES), prostaglandin F2α synthase (PGFS), its receptors (EP2, EP4 an FP), the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), 3β-hydroxysteroid-dehydrogenase (3βHSD) and the progesterone receptor (PR). Peripheral plasma P4 concentrations were determined by RIA. CL were collected via ovariohysterectomy from pregnant bitches (n = 3–5) on days 8–12 (Group 1, pre-implantation period), days 18–25 (Group 2, post-implantation period), days 35–40 (Group 3, mid-gestation period) and during the prepartal progesterone decline (Group 4). Additionally, CL were obtained from groups of 5 mid-pregnant dogs (days 40–45) 24 h, respectively 72 h after the second treatment with Aglepristone. Expression of Cox2 and PGES was highest during the pre-implantation period, that of PGFS and FP during the post-implantation period. EP4 and EP2 revealed a constant expression pattern throughout pregnancy with a prepartal upregulation of EP2. 3βHSD and StAR decreased significantly from the pre-implatation period to prepartal luteolysis, it was matched by the course of P4 concentrations. Expression of the PR was higher during mid-gestation and prepartal luteolysis than in the two preceding periods. After application of Aglepristone the overall mRNA-expression resembled the situation during prepartal luteolysis except for EP2, which remained unchanged.These data suggest that – as in the nonpregnant bitch – also in the pregnant bitch luteal production of prostaglandins is associated with luteal support rather than luteolysis. On the other hand induction of luteolysis by the PR blocker Aglepristone points to a role of luteal P4 as an autocrine factor in a positive loop feedback system controlling the availability of P4, StAR and 3βHSD. 相似文献

Human-induced habitat fragmentation might seriously affect behavioural patterns and the survival of species whose ecological
requirements strongly depend on specific environmental conditions. We compared the genetic structure and dispersal patterns
of 2 populations of Alouatta caraya (Plathyrrhini, Atelidae) to understand how habitat reduction and fragmentation affect gene flow in this species. We sampled
individuals from 7 groups living in continuous forest (CF, n = 46, 22 males and 24 females), and 11 groups that inhabit a fragmented forest (FF, n = 50, 24 males and 26 females). FST values based on 11 microsatellite loci showed a recent genetic differentiation among
groups in the FF. In contrast, the CF showed no differentiation among groups. Further, FST values between sexes, as well as
kinship relationships, also exhibited differences between habitats. In the CF, both males and females disperse, leading to
nondifferentiated groups composed of adults that are not close relatives. Conversely, in the FF, some groups are differentiated,
males disperse more than females, and groups are composed of closely related adult females. Our results suggest that habitat
fragmentation modifies the dispersal patterns of black-and-gold howlers. These differences between habitats may reflect a
reduced gene flow, providing genetic evidence that suggests that habitat fragmentation severely limits the howler’s ability
to disperse. An increasing level of isolation due to uncontrolled deforestation may cause similar loss of genetic diversity
on other arboreal primates, and nonprimates that depend on forest continuity to disperse, reducing their abilities to cope
