Within a cohort of 606 cases of infective endocarditis, 263 were complicated and 99 embolizing, of them 32 to the central nervous system (CNS). Significant predictors of CNS embolisation were inappropriate therapy (p<0.01) and enterococcal etiology (p<0.01). Gastric acid production is important in intestinal iron absorption. The peptide hormone gastrin exists in both amidated and non-amidated forms, which stimulate and potentiate gastric acid secretion, respectively. Since non-amidated gastrins require ferric ions for biological activity in vitro, this study investigated the connection between iron status and gastrin by measurement of circulating gastrin concentrations in mice and humans with hemochromatosis. Gastrin concentrations are increased in the plasma and gastric mucosa of Hfe(-/-) mice, and in the sera of humans with HFE-related hemochromatosis. The discovery of a relationship between iron status and circulating gastrin concentrations opens a new perspective on the mechanisms of iron homeostasis. 相似文献

The objective of this paper was to evaluate the 5-year incidence of obesity on a sample of 3229 adults and investigate the potential effect of several sociodemographic and lifestyle habits on weight change and obesity incidence in these individuals. The average annual rate of increase in the prevalence of obese adults between 2003 and 2008 was 10.60% for men and 11.08% for women. Analysis showed that development of obesity in 5-year period in women in Croatia is significantly positively associated with frequent consumption of "hidden" fats of animal origin and significantly negative with each higher education level. No significant predictor of obesity has been found in men. Obesity remains a serious health problem for the Croatian population; the alarming rates of excess body weight continue to increase. The FII c.1787G>A (prothrombin Belgrade) is a novel prothrombotic mutation which leads to impaired inhibition of thrombin by antithrombin (antithrombin resistance). So far, the mechanism of this variant has not been fully elucidated. To investigate the effect of FII c.1787G>A mutation on the prothrombin gene expression, its functional analysis was performed in vitro. By Real-Time PCR, expression levels of FII gene variants were evaluated in Cos-7 cells transiently transfected with c.1787G (wild-type) and c.1787A prothrombin expression vectors, with no differences observed. The relative quantification of prothrombin protein amounts was accomplished by Western blot analysis, also with no differences observed. Therefore, the mechanism of FII c.1787G>A mutation does not alter prothrombin expression profile. 相似文献

Digital computer simulations have been used to make quantitative predictions based on a simple set-back model of cell division synchronization. According to the model appropriate thermal stress reverses progress within a segment of the division cycle called the set-back interval. In the simulations normally distributed cell-to-cell variations in division cycling rate between periodic thermal shocks were produced with the Monte Carlo method.
The simulations have shown that reasonably good synchronization with the single shock per division strategy requires a relatively long set-back interval and small cell-to-cell variations in rate of progress through the division cycle. The simulations have shown that the degree of synchrony produced by such periodic shocks is highly dependent on the time interval between shocks—with a series of as many as seven shocks inappropriately spaced producing less synchrony than a single shock! The optimal time interval between successive thermal shocks was found approximately equal to the mode division cycle time at synchrony equilibrium multiplied by 1 plus half the fraction of the division cycle occupied by the set-back interval. The frequency of sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs) was investigated in peripheral lymphocytes of lupus erythematosus patients and compared with values obtained for healthy controls. Irrespective of the kind of medical treatment, an increased level of spontaneously occurring SCEs could be demonstrated in lupus patients. In addition to spontaneously occurring SCEs, mitomycin C (MMC)-induced SCEs were evaluated. No difference between patients and controls was found with respect to MMC-induced SCEs. 相似文献
