How different types of pattern formation mechanisms affect the evolution of form and development 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Here we investigate how development and evolution can affect each other by exploring what kind of phenotypic variation is produced by different types of developmental mechanisms. A limited number of developmental mechanisms are capable of pattern formation in development. Two main types have been identified. In morphodynamic mechanisms, induction events and morphogenetic processes, such as simple growth, act at the same time. In morphostatic mechanisms, induction events happen before morphogenetic mechanisms, and thus growth cannot influence the induction of a pattern. We present a study of the variational properties of these developmental mechanisms that can help to understand how and why a developmental mechanism may become involved in the evolution and development of a particular morphological structure. Using existing models of pattern formation in teeth, an extensive simulation analysis of the phenotypic variation produced by different types of developmental mechanisms is performed. The studied properties include the amount and diversity of the phenotypic variation produced, the complexity of the phenotypic variation produced, and the relationship between phenotype and genotype. These variational properties are so different between different types of mechanisms that the relative involvement of these types of mechanisms in evolutionary innovation and in different stages of development can be estimated. In addition, type of mechanism affects the tempo and mode of morphological evolution. These results suggest that the basic principles by which development is organized can influence the likelihood of morphological evolution. 相似文献

Characterizing genetic variation in parasite transmission traits and its contribution to parasite vigor is essential for understanding the evolution of parasite life‐history traits. We measured genetic variation in output, activity, survival, and infection success of clonal transmission stages (cercaria larvae) of a complex life cycle parasite (Diplostomum pseudospathaceum). We further tested if variation in host nutritional stage had an effect on these traits by keeping hosts on limited or ad libitum diet. The traits we measured were highly variable among parasite genotypes indicating significant genetic variation in these life‐history traits. Traits were also phenotypically variable, for example, there was significant variation in the measured traits over time within each genotype. However, host nutritional stage had no effect on the parasite traits suggesting that a short‐term reduction in host resources was not limiting the cercarial output or performance. Overall, these results suggest significant interclonal and phenotypic variation in parasite transmission traits that are not affected by host nutritional status. 相似文献

Certain RNA and DNA viruses that infect plants, insects, fish or poikilothermic animals encode Class 1 RNaseIII endoribonuclease-like proteins. dsRNA-specific endoribonuclease activity of the RNaseIII of rock bream iridovirus infecting fish and Sweet potato chlorotic stunt crinivirus (SPCSV) infecting plants has been shown. Suppression of the host antiviral RNA interference (RNAi) pathway has been documented with the RNaseIII of SPCSV and Heliothis virescens ascovirus infecting insects. Suppression of RNAi by the viral RNaseIIIs in non-host organisms of different kingdoms is not known. Here we expressed PPR3, the RNaseIII of Pike-perch iridovirus, in the non-hosts Nicotiana benthamiana (plant) and Caenorhabditis elegans (nematode) and found that it cleaves double-stranded small interfering RNA (ds-siRNA) molecules that are pivotal in the host RNA interference (RNAi) pathway and thereby suppresses RNAi in non-host tissues. In N. benthamiana, PPR3 enhanced accumulation of Tobacco rattle tobravirus RNA1 replicon lacking the 16K RNAi suppressor. Furthermore, PPR3 suppressed single-stranded RNA (ssRNA)—mediated RNAi and rescued replication of Flock House virus RNA1 replicon lacking the B2 RNAi suppressor in C. elegans. Suppression of RNAi was debilitated with the catalytically compromised mutant PPR3-Ala. However, the RNaseIII (CSR3) produced by SPCSV, which cleaves ds-siRNA and counteracts antiviral RNAi in plants, failed to suppress ssRNA-mediated RNAi in C. elegans. In leaves of N. benthamiana, PPR3 suppressed RNAi induced by ssRNA and dsRNA and reversed silencing; CSR3, however, suppressed only RNAi induced by ssRNA and was unable to reverse silencing. Neither PPR3 nor CSR3 suppressed antisense-mediated RNAi in Drosophila melanogaster. These results show that the RNaseIII enzymes of RNA and DNA viruses suppress RNAi, which requires catalytic activities of RNaseIII. In contrast to other viral silencing suppression proteins, the RNaseIII enzymes are homologous in unrelated RNA and DNA viruses and can be detected in viral genomes using gene modeling and protein structure prediction programs. 相似文献

1. A classic theory in biogeography predicts that high latitude communities are unstable. This may be because of decreased species richness or decreased environmental predictability and productivity towards the poles.
2. We studied latitudinal patterns in long-term community persistence of aquatic vascular plants in 112 Finnish lakes, situated within a 1000-km range from the northernmost to the southernmost lake.
3. Contrary to theoretical predictions, we found that the turnover rate of plant species in 45 years was inversely related to latitude. That is, plant communities in northern lakes were more persistent than communities in southern lakes. When we used multiple regression to find the best predictors of species turnover rate (TR), latitude was the only variable that was highly significantly related to species turnover rate. Area, species number, water transparency, pH and change in transparency did not notably explain the gradient observed.
4. The latitudinal trend was mainly because of lower species immigration rates at higher latitudes, whereas extinction rate did not so strongly decrease with increasing latitude. Immigrations and extinctions in the lakes were not in balance: the species numbers between the 1930s and 1980s increased more strongly in the southern than northern lakes.
5. We suggest that the inverse relationship between latitude and plant species TR in Finland is most probably caused by human influence on lakes, especially eutrophication and immigration of new species in southern latitudes. The diurnal vertical migrations of smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), larvae of phantom midge (Chaoborus flavicans) and cladoceran zooplankton in eutrophic Lake Hiidenvesi were studied in order to clarify the factors behind the low zooplankton biomass. In the study area, an oxygen minimum occurred in the metalimnion in the 10–15 m depth. No diurnal fluctuations in the position of the minimum were observed. Cladocerans inhabited the epilimnion throughout the study period and their vertical movements were restricted to above the thermocline and above the oxygen minimum. C. flavicansconducted a diurnal migration. During the day, the majority of the population inhabited the 12 – 15 m depth just in the oxygen minimum, while during darkness they were found in the uppermost 8 m. Smelts started ascending towards the water surface before sunset and reached the uppermost 3 m around 23:00. During daytime, the majority of smelts inhabited the depth of 7–9 m, where the water temperature was unfavourably high for them (18 °C). Smelts thus probably avoided the steep oxygen gradient in the metalimnion, whereas Chaoborusused the oxygen minimum as a refuge against predation. Those smelts that were found in the same water layers as Chaoborusused the larvae as their main prey. The metalimnetic oxygen minimum thus seemed to favour the coexistence of vertebrate and invertebrate predators, leading to a depression of cladoceran zooplankton. 相似文献

Abstract. We tested whether rewetting improved environmental conditions during peatland restoration and promoted colonization and development of mire vegetation. Vegetation change was monitored in a cut‐away peatland one year before, and four years after, rewetting. Colonizers before rewetting were perennials, mostly typical of hummocks or bare peat surfaces. The main variation in vegetation was related to variation in the amounts of major nutrients and water table level. The wettest site with the highest nutrient level had the highest total vegetation cover and diversity, as well as some species typical of wet minerotrophic mires. Raising the water table level above, or close to, the soil surface promoted development of wet minerotrophic vegetation. Diversity initially decreased because of the disappearance of hummock vegetation but started to recover in the third year. Eriophorum vaginatum and Carex rostrata were both favoured, and bryophytes typical of wet habitats colonized the site. Moderate rewetting promoted the development of Eriophorum vaginatum seedlings and an increase in the cover of tussocks. Bryophytes typical of disturbed peat surfaces spread. In the control site development continued slowly towards closed hummock vegetation. The study showed that raising the water level to, or above, soil surface promotes conditions wet enough for a rapid succession towards closed mire vegetation. 相似文献

Vertical distributions of total N, P, K, Ca and Mg in a 0–60 cm surface peat layer were studied at 80 pine mire sites in southern
Finland. The sites fell into two categories according to the soil nutrient regime: Meso-oligotrophic and oligo-ombrotrophic,
and formed a chronosequence from undrained sites to sites drained 55 years ago. A statistically significant drainage age effect
on the gravimetric (mg g-1) concentration profile forms was detected for all nutrients except K. In oligo-ombrotrophic sites
the concentration of N increased following drainage in the topmost layer (0–10 cm) and that of P in all layers. In meso-oligotrophic
sites the changes in N and P profiles were obscure. The concentration profiles of K remained clearly surface-enriched in both
site type groups, but there was a general drop in the concentration values immediately after drainage. Ca and Mg decreased,
especially in the 10–20 and 25–35 cm layers in both site type groups. The volumetric (kg m-3) nutrient concentrations clearly
reflected the increase in the bulk density of the surface peat occurring after drainage. The compaction of peat had compensated
for the effect of the processes removing nutrients from the soil (increased tree stand uptake, leaching); for Ca and Mg to
a lesser degree than for the other nutrients. It was concluded that the N, P and K profiles did not show changes that would
be likely to affect site productivity, whereas the net loss of Ca and Mg may cause problems in the longer term. As the total
K capital of the sites was in general rather small, a disturbance in the biological cycle, such as cutting of the tree stand,
may be critical.

To evaluate the utility of monitoring the sound-filtering characteristics of the respiratory system in the assessment of acute lung injury (ALI), we injected a multifrequency broadband sound signal into the airway of five anesthetized, intubated pigs, while recording transmitted sound over the trachea and on the chest wall. Oleic acid injections effected a severe lung injury predominantly in the dependent lung regions, increasing venous admixture from 6 +/- 1 to 54 +/- 8% (P < 0.05) and reducing dynamic respiratory system compliance from 19 +/- 0 to 12 +/- 2 ml/cmH(2)O (P < 0.05). A two- to fivefold increase in sound transfer function amplitude was seen in the dependent (P < 0.05) and lateral (P < 0.05) lung regions; no change occurred in the nondependent areas. High within-subject correlations were found between the changes in dependent lung sound transmission and venous admixture (r = 0.82 +/- 0.07; range 0.74-0.90) and dynamic compliance (r = -0.87 +/- 0.05; -0.80 to -0.93). Our results indicate that the acoustic changes associated with oleic acid-induced lung injury allow monitoring of its severity and distribution. 相似文献

Cross-sectional studies in athletes and untrained subjects suggest that exercise training induces adaptations in cardiac structure and function. However, the role of genetic variation on the results has largely been ignored in these studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of long-term volitionally increased physical activity on electrocardiographic and echocardiographic parameters in male monozygotic twin pairs discordant for physical activity and fitness. On the basis of the mailed questionnaires, a telephone interview, and the inclusion criteria, 12 pairs of young adult male monozygotic twins were recruited from a Finnish twin cohort. All subjects completed a maximal oxygen uptake (.VO2 (max)) test and electrocardiography and echocardiography studies. Nine pairs had at least 9% difference in .VO2(max) and were selected for further analysis and for a second echocardiography study. Twins were divided into the more (MAG) and less active group (LAG), according to their VO2(max). On average, MAG had 18% higher VO2(max) compared with LAG. In electrocardiography, MAG had 29% (P = 0.02) higher Cornell voltage and 37% (P = 0.01) higher right-side hypertrophy index. In echocardiography, no significant differences were observed between the groups, and left ventricular mass index was only 7% (P = 0.16) higher in MAG. These results show that the volitionally increased physical activity that has led to an 18% increase in cardiorespiratory fitness induces greater changes in electro- than echocardiographic parameters. Electrocardiographic changes were suggestive of left ventricular hypertrophy, and echocardiography showed a similar but statistically nonsignificant trend. 相似文献

Summary Defects in the enzyme steroid 21-hydroxylase (21-OH) result in congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a frequent disorder of steroid biosynthesis. The gene encoding the enzyme, 21-OHB, has been mapped adjacent to the complement component C4B gene in the human HLA gene complex. DNA-level analyses of patients with CAH have shown that the 21-OHB gene has often been deleted, but the detection of 21-OHB delections in heterozygotes is often problematic because it is based on relative band intensities. We here report a DNA polymorphism in the C4A91 gene unique to one particular type of 21-OHB deletion occurring solely with a complement phenotype BfF C4A91 B null, shown earlier to be frequent in CAH patients. This marker makes direct detection of the 21-OHB deletion in heterozygotes possible. 相似文献
