Behavioural ecology assumes that cognitive traits and their underlying neural substrates are shaped by natural selection in much the same way as morphological traits are, resulting in adaptation to the natural environment of the species concerned. Recently, however, the 'neuroecology' approach of attempting to gain insight into brain structure and function by testing predictions about variation in brain structure based on knowledge of the lifestyle of the animal has been criticized on the grounds that such an adaptationist view cannot provide insight into the underlying mechanisms. Furthermore, the criticism has focussed on attempts to use variation in demand for spatial memory and in hippocampal size as a basis for predicting variation in cognitive abilities. Here, we revisit this critique against the field of so-called 'neuroecology' and argue that using knowledge of the natural history of animals has lead to a better understanding of the interspecific variation in spatial abilities and hippocampal size, and to the generation of novel hypotheses and predictions. 相似文献

Habitat fragmentation increasingly threatens the services provided by natural communities and ecosystem worldwide. An understanding of the eco‐evolutionary processes underlying fragmentation‐compromised communities in natural settings is lacking, yet critical to realistic and sustainable conservation. Through integrating the multivariate genetic, biotic and abiotic facets of a natural community module experiencing various degrees of habitat fragmentation, we provide unique insights into the processes underlying community functioning in real, natural conditions. The focal community module comprises a parasitic butterfly of conservation concern and its two obligatory host species, a plant and an ant. We show that both historical dispersal and ongoing habitat fragmentation shape population genetic diversity of the butterfly Phengaris alcon and its most limited host species (the plant Gentiana pneumonanthe). Genetic structure of each species was strongly driven by geographical structure, altitude and landscape connectivity. Strikingly, however, was the strong degree of genetic costructure among the three species that could not be explained by the spatial variables under study. This finding suggests that factors other than spatial configuration, including co‐evolutionary dynamics and shared dispersal pathways, cause parallel genetic structure among interacting species. While the exact contribution of co‐evolution and shared dispersal routes on the genetic variation within and among communities deserves further attention, our findings demonstrate a considerable degree of genetic parallelism in natural meta‐communities. The significant effect of landscape connectivity on the genetic diversity and structure of the butterfly also suggests that habitat fragmentation may threaten the functioning of the community module on the long run. 相似文献

The protein composition of larval and adult hemolymph from the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, was investigated and some abundant, high molecular weight proteins were identified and characterized. Diapause protein 1, which occurs in the hemolymph of last instar larvae and short-day adults, appeared to be a storage protein. This protein dissociated into two bands due to the high pH used in nondenaturing gels. Its quaternary structure was established by chemical crosslinking. It appeared to be a hexamer. Diapause protein 1 is composed of approximately 82,000 subunits. The amino acid composition and N-terminal sequence of this protein has been determined. Specific antibodies against diapause protein 1 have been developed. Topical application of 1 microgram pyriproxyfen, a juvenile hormone analog, to last instar larvae and short-day adults suppressed the appearance of this protein in the hemolymph. Pyriproxyfen prematurely induced vitellogenin, when applied to last instar larvae. A larval specific protein was also identified in the hemolymph. Its temporary appearance in the hemolymph of last instar larvae, its subunit composition (M(r) approximately 82,000) and its suppression by pyriproxyfen suggests that this protein is a storage protein as well. 相似文献

The juvenile hormone binding protein in Locusta migratoria is a very high density lipoprotein of Mr ~ 566,000. It contains 15% lipid and is composed of six seemingly identical subunits of Mr ~ 77,000. It is a minor protein, constituting 1–2% of the total hemolymph proteins. Its concentration fluctuates with total protein content and follows a cyclic pattern related to the molting cycles. The binding protein has a high affinity for (10R)-juvenile hormone III. The dissociation constant for the hormone is 3.7 ~ 0.6 nM, and one binding molecule contains six hormone-specific binding sites. The concentration of binding sites in the hemolymph is therefore very high, reaching a value of 26 μM in the last larval instar and 11 μM in the adult male. 相似文献

The Volta River delta developed as an asymmetric lobe in a tectonic offset on the coast of Ghana. The delta comprises a large curvilinear spit that widens in its central portion due to the adjunction of successive sandy beach ridges. The appearance of a distinct spit, in lieu of a continuous barrier from the present mouth of the Volta River to the Bight of Benin coast, may be an outgrowth of a natural change in the location of the mouth of the Volta. The spit marks a segmentation of the unique sand drift cell that hitherto prevailed on this bight coast. Spit growth has been accompanied by a wave of erosion over the last century of the immediate downdrift sector of the bight coast, endangering the town of Keta. Erosion since the 1960s may have been aggravated by the construction of the Akosombo hydropower dam. The tip of the spit has recently welded to the shoreline, thus assuring resumption of sand supply from the Volta towards the rest of this formerly sand-starved sector of the bight coast. Blocking of sediment by the Akosombo Dam is, in due course, likely to become the overarching factor in delta shoreline stability. 相似文献

A novel generic approach for stress profiling was applied to Listeria monocytogenes strain F2365. This food-borne pathogen was exposed to gradients of five different stresses of increasing intensity, typically ranging from moderate to lethal conditions. The stress factors included heat, acidic pH, a detergent disinfectant, an oxidant, and hyperosmotic conditions. In addition to CFU counts and lag time, five different molecular viability parameters were measured by fluorescence-based assays, including membrane integrity, membrane potential, esterase activity, redox activity, and intracellular pH stability. The last was measured by our recently invented real-time viability assay. Exposure to all stresses resulted in clear dose-response relationships for all viability parameters with the exception of hyperosmotic conditions. A statistical analysis showed strong correlations for (i) the growth parameters plate counts and lag times, (ii) the enzyme-associated functions redox and esterase activity, and (iii) the membrane-associated pH stability and membrane integrity. Results indicated a pronounced difference in the susceptibilities of the measured parameters depending on the stress factor applied. However, at relatively high stress intensities, all of the viability parameters became affected independent of the stress factor. Applications of the approach presented here include studies on the mechanism of action of unknown compounds with biocidal activity and a comparative analysis of the severities of the impact of stress conditions of interest. It appears that a meaningful evaluation of the impact of mild stress conditions can be obtained only through measurement of multiple viability parameters. 相似文献

Sexually dimorphic galls are rare among gall‐inducing insects and the reason for their occurrence is unknown. The pteromalid wasp Trichilogaster acaciaelongifoliae, which induces galls on Acacia longifolia, is one such species. In the present study, the anatomical and physiological attributes of male and female galls of T. acaciaelongifoliae are examined and compared. Histological preparations are used to characterize anatomical differences between male and female gall chambers. Bioassays, high‐performance liquid chromatography‐mass spectrometry and an enzyme immunoassay are used to measure concentrations of auxin and cytokinin in normal buds, galled tissues, and larvae of both sexes. Female chambers are found to be 3.3‐fold larger, and are associated with 1.5‐fold more storage tissue and 3.5‐fold more vascular tissues than male chambers. Tissues from female chambers induce stronger cytokinin‐like bioactivity than tissues from male chambers. Female larvae have considerably higher concentrations of cytokinin free bases, ribosides, glucosides and monophosphates than male larvae; higher auxin‐like bioactivity than in normal or galled plant tissues; and almost twice the concentration of auxin than male larvae. Both male and female larvae contain much higher auxin concentrations than either galled or normal plant tissues. These findings suggest that differing levels of phytohormones are involved in the development of sexual dimorphism of gall structures in this species. 相似文献
