The caridean shrimp Lysmata vittata (Stimpson, 1860) (Decapoda: Hippolytidae): A new species for the fauna of Russia

The caridean shrimp Lysmata vittata (Stimpson, 1860) (Crustacea: Decapoda: Hippolytidae), which is found in the Pos??et Bay of the Sea of Japan is reported as new to the fauna of Russia. Sexually mature specimens of different ages were found at a depth of 2?C3 m among large boulders on a sandy bottom. The presence of a stable population of L. vittata in the investigated region substantially extends the distribution area of this species in the Sea of Japan.     

Magnetic resonance tomography of malignant tumors of the maxilla]

The authors discussed their experience in investigating 20 patients with maxillary malignant tumors using routine x-ray studies and MR-tomography, and 13 patients, investigated in the same way plus CT. MRT permitted defining a topical localization of a tumor and its spreading to adjacent anatomical regions (the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae, pharynx and peripharyngeal space, orbit, buccal soft tissues, and the cranial cavity). MRT was used to differentiate between tumor tissue and inflammation even within the sinus. As to the detection of osseous destruction, CT seemed much more superior than MRT. It was only in one patient that x-ray findings brought about better results than MRT because of artefacts resulting from metal crowns on the affected side.     

The Spawning Behavior of the Pipefish Syngnathus acusimilis

Parental care in representatives of the family Syngnathidae is carried out exclusively by the males and may restrict the reproductive success of the females, resulting in a reversal of their sexual roles. The reversal of the roles of the sexes is specific to polygamous species of the family; it has not been recorded in monogamous species. We describe the spawning behavior of the Primor'e pipefish Syngnathus acusimilis.We show that fish of this species, although polygamous, have no roles reversal between the sexes, and the males are more active during courtship and mate selection.     

Paguristes ortmanni Miyake, 1978 (Decapoda: Anomura)—A new genus and species of decapods for the Russia region

Specimens of Paguristes ortmanni Miyake, 1978 were found in August 2004 in Vostok and Wrangel bays (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan) during sample collection for embryological studies. This is the first record of the species Paguristes for the seas of Russia.     

A key for the identification of zoeae of burrowing shrimp of the infraorders Gebiidea and Axiidea in Peter the Great Bay,the Sea of Japan

An illustrated key for the identification of the first zoeal stage of burrowing shrimp of the infraorders Gebiidea and Axiidea in the plankton of Peter the Great Bay (the Sea of Japan) has been created. A summary of the main morphological features of gebiidean and axiidean larvae is presented. The possibility of variation of the number of zoeal stages in shrimp of the infraorders Gebiidea and Axiidea in different populations and/or under different laboratory conditions is discussed.     

High-priority research directions in genetics and the breeding of the sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) in the 21st century

High-priority research directions for the genetics and breeding of the sugar beet in the 21st century were developed with consideration of the available scientific achievements of domestic and foreign scholars. These directions unite the classical and molecular approaches to solving the problems of increasing the effectiveness of sugar beet breeding carried out on a genetic basis, and they correspond to the contemporary level of scientific research. Seven such directions are proposed.
