There are several pathologies related to the patellofemoral joint, in which the patellofemoral syndrome is one of the most common and challenging to treat. The patellofemoral syndrome results from a malalignment of the knee extensor mechanism. The purpose of our study was to describe and compare EMG responses of the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis muscles while walking up and down stairs and other clinical and functional responses in PFS subjects before and after a physical therapy intervention. Eleven subjects were studied and divided in two groups: six subjects with clinically diagnosed patellofemoral syndrome and five healthy control subjects. Subjects were evaluated by a functional and biomechanical evaluation protocol: postural evaluation, pain and knee function evaluation, and electromyographic activity of vastus medialis and lateralis muscles while walking up and down a staircase. Results showed higher efficiency of the vastus medialis muscle in carrying out eccentric exercises and increased muscle activity in both the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis muscles while climbing stairs after physical therapy treatment. We were able to identify an improvement in postural alignment of lower limb muscles and knee functionality among patellofemoral syndrome group subjects after treatment.  相似文献

Cardiac arrest caused by startling stimuli, such as visual and vibration stimuli, has been reported in some animals and could be considered as an extraordinary case of bradycardia and defined as reversible missed heart beats. Variability of the heart rate is established as a balance between an autonomic system, namely cholinergic vagus inhibition, and excitatory adrenergic stimulation of neural and hormonal action in teleost. However, the cardiac arrest and its regulating nervous mechanism remain poorly understood. We show, by using electrocardiogram (ECG) data loggers, that cardiac arrest occurs in chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) at the moment of gamete release for 7.39±1.61 s in females and for 5.20±0.97 s in males. The increase in heart rate during spawning behavior relative to the background rate during the resting period suggests that cardiac arrest is a characteristic physiological phenomenon of the extraordinarily high heart rate during spawning behavior. The ECG morphological analysis showed a peaked and tall T-wave adjacent to the cardiac arrest, indicating an increase in potassium permeability in cardiac muscle cells, which would function to retard the cardiac action potential. Pharmacological studies showed that the cardiac arrest was abolished by injection of atropine, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, revealing that the cardiac arrest is a reflex response of the parasympathetic nerve system, although injection of sotalol, a β-adrenergic antagonist, did not affect the cardiac arrest. We conclude that cardiac arrest during gamete release in spawning release in spawning chum salmon is a physiological reflex response controlled by the parasympathetic nervous system. This cardiac arrest represents a response to the gaping behavior that occurs at the moment of gamete release.  相似文献

A comparison was made between the thyrotropin (TSH) response to 500 microgram thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in summer and that in winter in ten healthy normal adults living in Supporo. The serum resin triiodothyronine (T3) uptake (RT3U), thyroxine (T4) and T3 levels were also measured. While the TSH response to TRH in summer was similar to that in winter, serum T3 concentration and free T3 index were significantly higher in winter than in summer, associated with the similar values in RT3U and T4 levels in serum. Independently measured 86 specimens (43 in summer and 43 in winter) from normal adults living in the same district also showed a significant increase in serum free T3 index as well as a slight elevation of serum T3 concentration in winter but not in serum T4 level. These results indicate that the primary change in cold winter would be the stimulation of peripheral conversion of T4 to T3 rather than the activation of hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid axis. The relevance of this interpretation was discussed.  相似文献

Chemical conjugation of poly(styrene-co-maleic acid) to an antitumor protein (neocarzinostatin) yielded an entirely new derivative designated as smancs (polystyrene-maleic acid conjugated neocarzinostatin). The purpose of the modification was to improve its pharmacological properties; the resulting conjugate exhibited much higher tumoritropism and lymphotropism, enhancedin vivo stability (about ten times), higher chemotherapeutic index (lower toxicity), and decreased antigenicity. Another advantage associated with this molecular engineering was an increased hydrophobicity. By this character it was solubilized in lipid contrast medium LipiodolR, which facilitated highly sensitive detection under x-ray-accompanying selective anticancer effectin situ. Three factors were responsible for such improvements: molecular size, hydrophobicity, and polyanionic nature. Most of the known drugs so far used as therapeutic agents are less than 1000 daltons, and those with larger molecular weights have been explored much less extensively. By polymer conjugation, the size of the drug can be extended to about 15,000 daltons (macromolecular therapeutics). The most outstanding characteristic of smancs (16,000 daltons) was the tumoritropicity, which may be a result of the highly developed neovasculature of solid tumors. Smancs as a prototype drug thus appears to lead the way in cancer drug targeting.  相似文献

Translational elongation is susceptible to inactivation by reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, and elongation factor G has been identified as a target of oxidation by ROS. In the present study we examined the sensitivity to oxidation by ROS of another elongation factor, EF-Tu. The structure of EF-Tu changes dramatically depending on the bound nucleotide. Therefore, we investigated the sensitivity to oxidation in vitro of GTP- and GDP-bound EF-Tu as well as that of nucleotide-free EF-Tu. Assays of translational activity with a reconstituted translation system from Escherichia coli revealed that GTP-bound and nucleotide-free EF-Tu were sensitive to oxidation by H2O2, whereas GDP-bound EF-Tu was resistant to H2O2. The inactivation of EF-Tu was the result of oxidation of Cys-82, a single cysteine residue, and subsequent formation of both an intermolecular disulfide bond and sulfenic acid. Replacement of Cys-82 with serine rendered EF-Tu resistant to inactivation by H2O2, confirming that Cys-82 was a target of oxidation. Furthermore, oxidized EF-Tu was reduced and reactivated by thioredoxin. Gel-filtration chromatography revealed that some of the oxidized nucleotide-free EF-Tu formed large complexes of >30 molecules. Atomic force microscopy revealed that such large complexes dissociated into several smaller aggregates upon the addition of dithiothreitol. Immunological analysis of the redox state of EF-Tu in vivo showed that levels of oxidized EF-Tu increased under strong light. Thus, resembling elongation factor G, EF-Tu appears to be sensitive to ROS via oxidation of a cysteine residue, and its inactivation might be reversed in a redox-dependent manner.  相似文献
