Knowledge of conodont element function is based largely on analysis of morphologically similar P1 elements of few comparatively closely related species known from abundant articulated remains. From these, a stereotypical pattern of rotational occlusion has been inferred, leading to the suggestion that this may represent a general model for ozarkodinin P1 elements at the very least. We test the generality of this occlusal model through functional analysis of Pseudofurnishius murcianus P1 elements which, though superficially similar to homologous elements in gnathodids, evolved their platform morphology independently, through a different mode of morphogenesis, and in a different topological position within the element. Our integrated functional analysis of several articulated clusters of P1 elements encompassed physical and virtual occlusal analyses, constrained by microwear and sharpness analyses. All of the evidence supports an occlusal model in which the Pseudofurnishius P1 elements occluded with the dextral blade located between the rostral face of the sinistral blade and the first cusp of the rostral primary process. In achieving this, the dorsal and ventral blades guided the opposing elements, and the rostral processes of both elements guided the final stages of precise occlusion. Spalling and microwear on the non‐occlusal side of the element evidence malocclusion, requiring the complete separation of elements within the occlusal cycle. This occlusal cycle is entirely linear, orthogonal to the plane of attachment of the elements. Evidently, the rotational occlusal model is not general for P1 elements, even for ozarkodinins, and it is likely that among conodonts occlusal kinematics are as disparate as element morphologies. Attempts to elucidate the diversity of occlusal kinematics and, therefore, feeding ecologies of conodonts will be repaid by an understanding of the role of this important abundant and diverse clade in Palaeozoic and Mesozoic marine ecosystems.  相似文献

The carcinogen 3-methyl-1-phenyltriazene (MPT) was administered subcutaneously to normal or pregnant BD VI rats and DNA and RNA were isolated from various tissues after 8 h or 15 h, respectively. Sephadex G-10 chromatography of DNA hydrolysates showed the presence of 7-methylguanine in all tissues examined including that of the brain, one of the target organs for tumour induction. The amounts of the minor product, O6-methylguanine, were characteristic of an SN1 reaction mechanism. Dowex-50 chromatography of RNA hydrolysates showed the presence of 7-methylguanine and of the minor product, 3-methylcytosine. The relative amounts, both of the methylated bases in the individual nucleic acids and of 7-methylguanine in DNA and RNA, were similar to those found previously after administration of 3,3-dimethyl-1-phenyltriazene (DMPT). This suggests the involvment of a common alkylating intermediate. De novo incorporation of radioactivity into purine bases was detected in both DNA and RNA although the levels were not related to the amounts of methylation. The results show that MPT is sufficiently stable to alkylate nucleic acids in vivo and are consistent with the hypothesis that this reaction is a prerequisite for tumour induction. Futhermore, they support the proposal that MPT is the active intermediate in the induction of tumours by DMPT.  相似文献

Mg2+ transport across the brush border of proximal intestinal epithelium of the teleost fish Oreochromis mossambicus was investigated, using 27Mg2+ to trace movement of Mg2+. Mg2+ uptake in brush border membrane vesicles was stimulated by a K+ diffusion potential (inside negative). Electrodiffusive Mg2+ transport obeyed simple Michaelis-Menten kinetics and was strongly temperature dependent, indicative of a carrier mechanism. The metal ion specificity of this electrodiffusive pathway (inhibition potency order: Co > Mn = Ni > La > Ca > Gd > Ba), predicts a specific role in Mg2+ transport. Competitive inhibition by Co(III) hexammine [Co(NH3)(6)(3+)] suggests that this transport system interacts with the solvated Mg ion. We propose that this novel transport system allows the uptake of Mg2+ across the apical brush border membrane, and is involved in transcellular Mg2+ transport. Consequently, the prevailing potential difference across the apical membrane represents a major driving force for intestinal Mg2+ absorption.  相似文献

Advances in surgical techniques for correction of craniofacial anomalies have necessitated the development of objective pre- and postoperative quantitative assessments. Standard anthropometric techniques, supplemented by additional methods oriented to specific clinical problems, have proved useful in defining surface dysmorphology in craniofacial patients. A series of 77 surface measurements of the head and face and 41 proportions were determined in 20 preoperative patients with Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare congenital defect of the first and second branchial arches. To permit comparison with age- and sex-specific data for healthy North American children, the patient data were converted to standard (Z) scores. To test the hypothesis Z = 0, Student's t-test was performed on all variables. The anthropometric findings verified many of the clinical findings in this syndrome. In addition, a number of previously unreported defects were found. The cranium was low and short with a low, narrow forehead and a narrow cranial base. The face was narrow and shallow, the mandible long and narrow, and the lower face receding. The eye fissures were short with an antimongoloid inclination, but the orbits were hyperteloric. The nasal root was high and wide, the nasofrontal angle open, and the bridge inclination low. The labial fissure was narrow, and the ears were microtic. Except in the nasal root the defects were hypoplastic. Most of these defects were either horizontal or anteroposterior. Recognition of the defective areas and their contribution to disproportions of the head and face is important in the development of surgical strategies.  相似文献
