Small and medium sized mammals as predators of ticks (Ixodoidea) in South Africa

A total of 1,640 stomach contents from 56 South African species of small and medium sized mammals were examined for ticks. Only six ticks were found in three specimens of the caracal Felis caracal. Although identification of the tick species was not possible owing to fragmentation and partial digestion, the genus Haemaphysalis was represented in four of these cases. We conclude that predation by small and medium sized mammals on ticks is uncommon in South Africa.     

A new species of Polystoma (Monogenea: Polystomatidae) parasitic in Hyperolius marmoratus (Anura: Hyperoliidae) in South Africa

Polystoma marmorati n. sp. is described as a new polystomatid species parasitic in the urinary bladder of the painted reed frog Hyperolius marmoratus marmoratus collected in southern Natal, South Africa. Parasite prevalence varied from 14.5 to 47.4% and the mean intensity from 1.0 to 1.1. The hamuli of the new species have a characteristic, partly fragmented appearance, a feature also seen in Polystoma batchvarivi, the only other polystome described from a species of the genus Hyperolius. The similarity between the two species, in spite of their geographical separation, is commented upon.     

The benthic infauna and benthic respiration off the Banc d'Arguin (Mauritania,Northwest Africa)

In May 1988, a study was made of the benthic community structure and benthic respiratory activity along two transects across the Mauritanian shelf off Banc d'Arguin. The main emphasis of the present paper is put on the macrobenthos, but results of a gross analysis of the meibenthos are discussed as well. Macrofaunal and meiofaunal density showed no consistent decrease with distance from the shore. The composition of the macrofauna taxa appeared to be closely correlated with sediment parameters and less so with depth. The highest macrofaunal biomass was found at the northern edge of the Banc d'Arguin, and the lowest biomass along the outer shelf. The biomass levels on the shelf match the ones reported for the northern Cap Blanc area where, in contrast to the seasonal upwelling in the investigated area, upwelling takes place all year round.Benthic respiration rates on the offshore shelf were relatively high at the nearshore stations and low near the shelf break. Experimental evidence suggests that the low O₂ levels in the upwelling water covering part of shelf, inhibited benthic respiration. The high respiratory activity at some northern inshore stations coincided with the presence of oxygen-rich coastal water. In this area benthic respiration surpassed the level previously reported for the enriched Cap Blanc area. On the basis of our respiration data, an estimate is made of the total carbon demand of the benthic community on the shelf in May and this quantity is compared with the measurements of daily primary production.     

Conversion of type II procollagen to collagen in Vitro: Removal of the carboxy-terminal extension is inhibited by several naturally occurring amino acids,polyamines, and structurally related compounds

Chick embryo sterna, which actively synthesize type II procollagen, were pulse-labeled with radioactive proline; protein synthesis was then inhibited by unlabeled proline and cycloheximide. After the inhibition of protein synthesis, several amino acids, polyamines, or structurally related compounds were added to the incubation medium. The conversion of procollagen, first to two intermediates, pC-collagen and pN-collagen, and then to collagen, was monitored by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis. The addition of 50 mm β-alanine, arginine, asparagine, glutamine, hydroxylysine, lysine, or ornithine, as well as agmatine, ?-aminocaproic acid, S-2-aminoethylcysteine, cadaverine, canavanine, putrescine, or spermine clearly inhibited the removal of the carboxy-terminal extension and pC-collagen accumulated; the removal of the amino-terminal extension was not affected. The inhibition of the conversion was reversible and unaffected by fetal calf serum. The results suggest that the conversion of type II procollagen to collagen requires at least two separate proteinases for the removal of amino-terminal and carboxy-terminal extensions. The results further suggest that naturally occurring molecules may be used to modulate the rate of conversion of procollagen to collagen, and development of analogs of these compounds may provide the means to interfere with excessive deposition of collagen in diseases with tissue fibrosis.     

The chemical identity of the immunoreactive LHRH-like peptide biosynthesized in the human placenta

Freshly obtained human placental trophoblasts were minced and pulselabeled for 30 min at 37°C with tritiated L-Tyrosine. After homogenisation, the crude extract was centrifuged and deproteinized with 10% TCA. The supernatant was defatted and the peptides concentrated through hydrophobic binding on ODS-silica cartridges. The bound, crude peptide extract was eluted and subjected to gradient, reverse-phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography. The fractions corresponding to the absorption peak of reference, synthetic LHRH were collected and extensively purified to radioactive homogeneity by further multiple HPLC. After digestion with pyroglutamate aminopeptidase, the resulting nonapeptide was manually sequenced by dansyl-Edman degradation. All the incorporated radioactivity was found to reside exclusively in residue number 4 of the nonapeptide; thus establishing for the first time the primary sequence of biosynthetic placental LHRH as: pGlu-His-Trp-Ser-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-NH₂, identical to its hypothalamic counterpart.
