Use of limestone for pH control in autotrophic denitrification: continuous flow experiments in pilot-scale packed bed reactors 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The sulfur-utilizing autotrophic denitrification process consumes about 4 g alkalinity (as CaCO(3)) per g NO(3)-N reduced resulting in a decrease of pH. Using limestone as an alkalinity source to control the pH, autotrophic denitrification of synthetic wastewater with varying alkalinity to NO(3)-N ratios was evaluated in pilot-scale packed bed reactors operating in the upflow mode, which contained limestone and sulfur granules in different volumetric ratios. The results demonstrated that limestone supplies effective buffering capacity, if the initial alkalinity of the wastewater is insufficient for complete denitrification. The alkalinity supplied by limestone is a function of hydraulic retention time and the pH, which in turn depends on the extent of biological denitrification and the initial alkalinity to NO(3)-N ratio in the wastewater. The dissolution rate of limestone is inversely proportional to pH for pH values lower than 7.1. It was found that the ratio of influent alkalinity to theoretically required alkalinity in the wastewater should not be lower than 0.5 in order to prevent a decrease in nitrate removal performance. Based on the established chemical-biological interactive relationships, a multilayer approach was proposed to determine the optimum sulfur:limestone ratio for nitrate removal under steady state conditions, taking into account the characteristics of the influent wastewater. 相似文献

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) and noradrenaline (NA) are co-transmitters at many sympathetic synapses, but it is not yet clear if their release is independently regulated. To address this question, we quantified the electrically evoked release of these co-transmitters from perivascular nerve terminals to the mesenteric circulation in control and drug-treated rats. 6-Hydroxydopamine reduced the tissue content and the electrically evoked release of ir-NPY and NA as well as the rise in perfusion pressure. A 0.001 mg/kg reserpine reduced the content of ir-NPY and NA, but did not modify their release nor altered the rise in perfusion pressure elicited by the electrical stimuli. However, 0.1mg/kg reserpine reduced both the content and release of NA but decreased only the content but not the release of ir-NPY; the rise in perfusion pressure was halved. Clonidine did not affect the release of ir-NPY while it lowered the outflow of NA, not altering the rise in perfusion pressure elicited by the electrical stimuli. Yohimbine, did not modify the release of ir-NPY but increased the NA outflow, it antagonized the clonidine effect. A widely applicable strategy is presented for efficient and rapid production of small water soluble peptides expressed as fusion proteins with the immunoglobulin-binding domain of streptococcal protein G. A simple extraction and purification scheme that includes a protease cleavage step to release the target peptide is described. The yield of authentic target peptide exceeds 10 mg per liter of culture. We examined pial arteriolar reactivity to a partially endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS)-dependent vasodilator ADP as a function of chronic estrogen status. The eNOS-dependent portion of the ADP response was ascertained by comparing ADP-induced pial arteriolar dilations before and after suffusion of a NOS inhibitor, N(omega)-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA; 1 mM) in intact, ovariectomized (Ovx), and 17beta-estradiol (E2)-treated Ovx females. We also examined whether ovariectomy altered the participation of other factors in the ADP response. Those factors were the following: 1) the prostanoid indomethacin (Indo); 2) the Ca2+-dependent K+ (K(Ca)) channel, iberiotoxin (IbTX); 3) the ATP-regulated K+ (K(ATP)) channel glibenclamide (Glib); 4) the K(Ca)-regulating epoxygenase pathway miconazole (Mic); and 5) the adenosine receptor 8-sulfophenyltheophylline (8-SPT). In intact females, the eNOS-dependent (L-NNA sensitive) portion of the ADP response represented approximately 50% of the total. The ADP response was retained in the Ovx rats but L-NNA sensitivity disappeared. On E2 replacement, the initial pattern was restored. ADP reactivity was unaffected by Indo, Glib, Mic, and 8-SPT. IbTX was associated with 50-80% reductions in the response to ADP in the intact group that was nonadditive with L-NNA, and 60-100% reductions in the Ovx group. The present findings suggest that estrogen influences the mechanisms responsible for ADP-induced vasodilation. The continued sensitivity to IbTX in Ovx rats, despite the loss of a NO contribution, is suggestive of a conversion to a hyperpolarizing factor dependency in the absence of E2. 相似文献

We tested whether annual seed production (masting or mast fruiting) in Northern Hemisphere trees is an evolved strategy or a consequence of resource tracking by comparing masting patterns with those of annual rainfall and mean summer temperatures, two environmental variables likely to correlate with available resources. There were generally significant negative autocorrelations between the seed crop in year x and year x+1 (year x+2 in species of Quercus requiring 2 yr to mature acorns), as expected if resources are depleted in mast years in part by switching resources from growth to reproduction. Spatial autocorrelation in annual seed production generally declined with distance but was statistically significant over large geographic areas. Variability in annual seed production was relatively high and inversely correlated with latitude and generally not bimodally distributed. Patterns of spatial autocorrelation in annual rainfall and summer temperatures are generally similar to those exhibited by annual seed production, and relative variability in annual rainfall is also inversely correlated with latitude. However, these environmental variables exhibit distinctly different patterns of temporal autocorrelation, are much less variable, and are more normally distributed than annual seed production. Combined with the inverse relationship between growth and reproduction previously documented, these results support the hypothesis that variability in annual seed production is an evolved strategy and that annual seed production is more or less normally distributed rather than an all-or-none phenomenon. 相似文献
